Claude Code can use a screenshot MCP server once you add that server at the correct scope, authenticate it, and confirm that its tools are available. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standardized way to connect AI applications to external systems. The important qualification is that “screenshot MCP server” is not one standardized package: each implementation decides whether it captures a desktop display, a browser page, or another target, and it defines its own tool names, arguments, permissions, and image handling.
This guide shows the vendor-neutral Claude Code workflow, then uses ScreenshotNeo as a concrete browser-screenshot option. Replace the placeholders with the exact command or endpoint published by the server you trust.
What you need before connecting a screenshot server
- A Claude Code installation and an eligible Claude Code account. Anthropic’s setup documentation lists Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise, Console, and supported third-party API-provider access; plan availability can change, so check the current requirements before setup.
- The screenshot server’s own installation instructions, including its transport (local stdio, remote HTTP, SSE, or WebSocket), launch command or URL, supported operating systems, authentication method, and tool schema.
- Permission to capture the selected target. A desktop-capture server may require operating-system screen-recording permission; a browser service may instead need a URL, cookies, or other credentials. Do not assume one server’s requirements apply to another.
Verify the server’s provenance before connecting it. Anthropic warns: “Verify you trust each server before connecting it.” A server that fetches external content can expose the session to prompt injection, so treat URLs, credentials, and returned images as untrusted data until you inspect them.
Choose the right Claude Code MCP scope
Claude Code supports three useful configuration scopes. Pick deliberately because scope controls who can use the server and where its configuration is stored.

Local scope
Use local scope for a private experiment or a machine-specific setup. It avoids changing the repository’s shared configuration and is the safest place to test an unfamiliar server.
Project scope
Project scope stores shared configuration in the repository’s .mcp.json. This is convenient for a team, but the file is shared and must not contain committed API keys. Claude Code requires approval before using a project-scoped server from this file.
User scope
User scope makes the server available across your projects. It is useful for a trusted, reusable service, but it also broadens the impact of a misconfigured or compromised server.
Add a local or remote MCP server
First read the selected server’s instructions. The following are the documented Claude Code command patterns; they are not installation commands for a particular screenshot package.

Local stdio server
For a server started as a local process, place the server name before --, followed by the server’s launch command and arguments:
claude mcp add screenshot -- <server-launch-command> <arguments>For example, substitute the exact executable, package name, and flags supplied by the server author. A stdio server runs as a local process and is not automatically reconnected after it exits.

Remote HTTP server
For a server that publishes an HTTP endpoint, use the HTTP transport pattern:
claude mcp add --transport http screenshot https://<host>/<path>Use the endpoint exactly as documented. Some services use SSE or WebSocket instead, and the server’s documentation determines which transport and authentication flags are valid. Remote HTTP/SSE connections can receive automatic reconnect attempts after some transient failures.
Authentication and secrets
Complete OAuth through Claude Code’s /mcp flow when the remote server requires it. A local server may instead read an environment variable. Keep tokens out of shell history, source control, and a shared .mcp.json. Claude Code supports environment-variable expansion in MCP configuration, but not every credential variable is expanded in remote URL or header settings; follow the current Claude Code and server-specific authentication instructions.
Confirm that Claude Code connected
- Run
claude mcp listto see configured servers and their status. - Run
claude mcp get <name>for the endpoint, transport, and more detailed status. - Inside a Claude Code session, run
/mcpto inspect connections and complete any pending authorization.
A connected status proves discovery and transport, not that a screenshot was captured correctly or that the returned image is safe to share. Check the actual result and the server’s retention and transmission policy.
Invoke the screenshot tool without guessing its interface
After the server is connected, inspect the tools it advertises. Do not assume every server has a tool named take_screenshot, accepts a URL, or returns a downloadable PNG. The implementation decides whether its target is a desktop screen, browser viewport, or another resource.
Use a prompt that states the target and the desired inspection, while asking Claude Code to use the server’s real tool description:

Use the connected screenshot MCP server. Capture the login page at the target documented by the server, wait until the page is ready, and report the exact tool arguments you used. Do not submit forms or expose credentials.If the server exposes a browser-oriented tool, provide the URL and any documented viewport, wait, or authentication arguments. If it captures the local desktop, identify the display or window only when its documentation supports that option. The server does not appear in claude mcp list
Check the server name, command spelling, executable path, and current working directory. For a remote server, verify the complete HTTPS URL and transport flag. Re-run claude mcp get <name> and correct the first concrete error shown.
OAuth or authentication fails
Run /mcp and complete the provider’s authorization flow. Confirm that the token has the scopes required by the screenshot tool and that it has not expired. For stdio, export the environment variable expected by the server and restart Claude Code.
A project server waits for approval
Approve the server from the prompt only after reviewing .mcp.json, its command, and its permissions. Remove secrets from the file and use the supported secret mechanism instead.
The tool is connected but no image is returned
Read the tool description and inspect its required arguments. The server may return a file reference, structured metadata, or an image content block rather than a local filename. Ask Claude Code to report the raw result shape, then follow that implementation’s output instructions.
The capture is blank, blocked, or incomplete
Check whether the target requires authentication, a longer wait, a selector wait, JavaScript, or a different viewport. The local server stopped responding
Stdio servers are local processes and are not automatically reconnected. Restart the launch command, check its stderr output, and confirm runtime and package versions. Remote HTTP/SSE services may retry transient failures, but persistent authentication or endpoint errors still require correction.

Operational and security checklist
- Use local scope for experiments, project scope only for reviewed team configuration, and user scope for trusted services you need everywhere.
- Never commit API keys, cookies, Authorization headers, or private URLs.
- Minimize permissions and avoid sending production credentials to a screenshot service unless its handling policy meets your requirements.
- Review images for secrets, personal data, and prompt-injection content before sharing them with people or downstream agents.
- Record the server version, transport, tool name, and capture parameters when reproducibility matters.
- For repeated captures, use documented waits, caching, and resource blocking deliberately; these settings change freshness, completeness, speed, and cost.
What a successful setup proves
When /mcp and the CLI show a healthy connection and the advertised tool returns the expected image, Claude Code is correctly connected to that server. It does not establish that every page can be captured, that desktop permissions are configured, or that the service retains no data. Those properties belong to the selected server’s documentation and your own verification.
