You can use a scheduled YouTube livestream to create the event and watch page for a radio broadcast, but scheduling alone will not keep a station on air. You also need an encoder to send the audio feed to YouTube, an operator to start and monitor the event, and a plan for stream endings and recovery. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, so do not assume one scheduled event will run indefinitely.
What a scheduled livestream does—and what it does not
A scheduled stream creates an upcoming event on your channel. Viewers can find its watch page and, depending on their settings, receive reminders. The station’s actual audio still has to come from a playback or mixing source and reach YouTube through an encoder.
The encoder sends the feed using the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Once YouTube receives it and displays a preview in Live Control Room, you can start the event there. Scheduling does not generate audio, keep an encoder running, or guarantee uninterrupted broadcasting. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe the connection and event workflow.
Check channel eligibility and prepare the station
Enable livestreaming early
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. Its general guidance also sets a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. First-time livestream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so complete activation well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s livestreaming tips for current eligibility guidance.

Choose the audio source and encoder
Decide what will supply the station’s program: for example, a computer playing a prepared playlist, a mixer, or another compatible audio source. Configure the encoder to capture that signal. External audio hardware such as a preamp or microphone may be appropriate for a particular setup, but YouTube’s instructions do not make such gear mandatory for every station.
Choose an encoder and connection method that support your intended audio chain and can operate for the duration you need. YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents supported protocols, codecs, and resolution-specific bitrate ranges in its encoder settings guidance. Use a format and bitrate the encoder and internet connection can sustain; a radio-only broadcast does not need a high video resolution simply because the encoder offers one.

Protect the stream key
Your stream key connects the encoder to the channel’s live stream. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to send a feed to your event. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key. YouTube supports reusable stream keys and lets you reuse prior stream settings; confirm which key and settings are selected before each event.

Schedule the YouTube event and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Go Live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse prior settings.
- Set the event details. Check the title, description, thumbnail, privacy setting, date, and time. Scheduling makes the upcoming event page available; it does not start the station feed.
- Copy the connection details. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and key and enter them in the encoder. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Configure the audio and output. Select the station’s actual audio input, then choose an encoder format and bitrate that both the encoder and network can maintain. Follow YouTube’s current protocol and settings guidance rather than copying a video preset that your connection cannot sustain.
- Preflight before airtime. YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes beforehand. Check that the encoder is sending, the preview appears in Live Control Room, the watch page opens, and the audio is clear. Test any backup path you expect to use.
- Start the event. Start the encoder and wait for YouTube’s preview. When it is ready, select Go live in Live Control Room. Auto-start and auto-stop are available with the relevant settings, but test them in your setup rather than treating them as a substitute for monitoring.
- End and verify. When you intend to stop an event, stop sending the feed and use End Stream as appropriate. Check the resulting archive and confirm how the next scheduled event will be handled.
YouTube documents scheduled-event notifications, stream keys, and related controls in Manage live stream settings. A trailer is a separate option, not a requirement for a radio event; YouTube’s stated eligibility includes more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes.

Plan continuity beyond a single scheduled event
YouTube says all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That behavior makes a single event an unsafe assumption for indefinite broadcasting. Decide in advance how the station will handle the event’s end, create or start a subsequent event if needed, and verify the behavior of the specific channel and encoder configuration before relying on it.
Continuous operation also depends on more than the scheduled watch page: the program source must keep playing, the encoder must keep sending, the network must remain available, and someone or something must detect failures and restore the feed. YouTube recommends monitoring and checking a failover path where continuity matters. Neither auto-start nor a reusable stream key alone proves that the station will recover unattended.

Common problems and practical fixes
- Livestreaming is not enabled: Complete channel verification and enable live access in advance; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check for an active restriction if the channel is ineligible.
- No preview appears: Confirm the encoder is running, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the encoder is sending the selected audio source. If the key may be compromised or incorrect, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Audio is missing or distorted: Check the encoder’s selected input and the station’s playback or mixer output, then inspect levels and cabling in the actual signal chain. Do not assume a separate interface is required; use one only if it fits the source and connections.
- The feed drops or becomes unstable: Check whether the encoder and internet connection can sustain the configured output. Lower the bitrate or use a more suitable connection if necessary, and test a backup path before depending on it.
- The event ends or archives unexpectedly: Account for YouTube’s under-12-hour archive behavior and verify the transition to the next event in your setup. Do not treat scheduling as an indefinite-stream mechanism.
- A scheduled event is live but listeners cannot hear the station: Confirm the encoder is sending the intended program audio—not merely an active video signal—and inspect the preview before going live.
Rights and channel-policy checks for radio
Before broadcasting music, confirm that the station has the rights needed to transmit and archive the audio on YouTube. A scheduled event or stream key does not grant music rights. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not determine whether a particular recording, composition, performance, or territory is licensed for your use; check the relevant rights and current YouTube policies separately before launch.
