You cannot pair a Samsung Smart Remote directly to a Fire TV Stick using the documented Samsung setup. Instead, pair the Samsung remote with the Samsung TV, use the Fire TV remote’s Equipment Control feature for basic TV power and volume, or register the Fire device in the TV’s Universal Remote setup. Choose the steps below based on which remote you want to use and what you need it to control.
Choose the right setup

These are separate workflows, not a direct pairing of a Samsung Smart Remote to Fire TV. Samsung’s instructions describe each setup independently: Samsung Smart Remote pairing, third-party remote control, and Universal Remote setup.
Pair the Samsung Smart Remote with the Samsung TV
- Point the Smart Remote at the TV’s remote sensor. Samsung says the sensor is usually at the lower-right corner or bottom-center of the TV.
- Press and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds.
- Wait for the on-screen confirmation that the remote has connected.
The Samsung Smart Remote is paired to one device at a time. If you are moving it to another compatible Samsung TV or device, repeat the pairing steps. If your remote has a different button layout, check the manual for your exact TV and remote model; Samsung notes that button layouts and instructions can vary. See Samsung’s pairing instructions.

Set the Fire TV remote to control Samsung TV power or volume
This is the relevant setup if you want the Fire TV remote to operate basic TV functions. Samsung says the Fire Stick remote can control functions such as volume and turning the TV on or off when the required settings are in place; it does not promise that every TV function will work.

- Enable Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) on the Samsung TV. On many models, go to Settings > External Device Manager. On older TVs, the path may be Settings > System > Expert Settings.
- Open Equipment Control on Fire TV. On the Fire TV remote, press Home, open Settings, then choose Equipment Control > Add Equipment. If the TV is already listed, you may see Manage Equipment instead.
- Add the TV. Choose TV and let Fire TV search. When it detects the Samsung TV, confirm Yes and then OK.
- Check the controls. If power or volume does not behave as expected, adjust the TV brand or volume-control options in Equipment Control and test again.

Register the Fire device in Samsung Universal Remote
Samsung also documents registering an HDMI-connected Amazon Fire device through the TV’s Universal Remote setup. This is a TV-side device registration, not the same as pairing the Samsung Smart Remote directly with Fire TV.

- Turn on the Amazon Fire device and open the Samsung TV’s Source screen.
- Select Universal Remote, then choose Start.
- Choose OTT Box/Game console. Samsung includes Amazon Fire in this category.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup.
The TV can remember the device and the HDMI port it uses. If the device stops responding, Samsung says it may need to be registered again. Menus and results vary by Samsung TV model and connected device. See Samsung’s Universal Remote instructions.
Troubleshoot when the setup does not work
- The Samsung Smart Remote will not connect: Aim it at the TV sensor and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds. If its buttons differ, use the manual for the exact model.
- The Fire TV remote will not control TV power or volume: Check that Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) is enabled, then revisit Settings > Equipment Control on Fire TV. Re-run or adjust the TV setup if needed.
- The TV does not respond to a registered Fire device: Repeat the Samsung Universal Remote registration and confirm the device is connected to the HDMI port selected during setup.
- You are using another universal or third-party remote: Follow that remote maker’s programming instructions and confirm it is compatible with your Samsung TV. Some TV features may not be available with third-party remotes; Samsung’s replacement-remote guidance explains how to identify a remote for a specific Samsung product.
Compatibility is not universal across all Samsung TVs, Fire TV devices, and remote models. If the menus or buttons differ, consult the instructions for the exact models rather than assuming another model’s steps apply.
