You can use a Raspberry Pi as the host for an encoder that combines an internet radio feed with a picture or other visual source, then sends the resulting audiovisual stream to YouTube Live. Before you start, confirm you have permission to rebroadcast the station and its music. The exact encoder setup depends on the station’s feed format, your Pi and operating system, and the visual you choose.

Before you stream: confirm rebroadcast rights

Being able to listen to a station online does not give you permission to retransmit it. Before configuring the Pi, ask the station and relevant rights holders whether you may rebroadcast the feed and the music on your YouTube channel. Check any territory limits and whether your channel must be added to a rights holder’s Content ID allowlist.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content. A match can lead to a placeholder image, interruption, or termination; having a license does not necessarily prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and YouTube’s terms before going live.

What you need

  • A Raspberry Pi and operating system capable of running your chosen encoder. No minimum Pi model is established for this workflow; check the encoder’s requirements and test the expected workload on your particular setup.
  • The station’s actual stream URL and details about its audio format. Confirm that your encoder can read that feed and reconnect if the station stream drops.
  • A visual source to accompany the audio, such as a still image, visualizer, loop, or camera feed.
  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the stream URL and stream key for the broadcast.
  • A stable network connection and a way to monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health while the broadcast is running.

Raspberry Pi’s streaming documentation describes network multimedia streaming with rpicam-apps and libav, including audio support in suitable formats. It covers camera/network streaming rather than this exact radio-to-YouTube setup, so it does not establish a universal command, codec, or minimum board for this task.

Set up the radio-to-YouTube stream

  1. Choose and test an encoder. Select software that can read the station’s specific stream format, combine its audio with your chosen visual source, and send a live stream using an ingest protocol supported by both the encoder and YouTube. Check the software’s own documentation for its installation steps and settings; the correct configuration depends on the feed, Pi model, operating system, and visual source.
  2. Prepare the visual. Add a still, visualizer, loop, or camera source in the encoder. Confirm that the video is suitable to show throughout the broadcast and that your rights cover any images or other material you use.
  3. Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create and then Go Live, and create or schedule a stream. If this is your channel’s first live stream, YouTube says enabling live streaming may take up to 24 hours.
  4. Copy the ingest details. In the broadcast settings, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the encoder’s server and stream-key fields. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your broadcast.
  5. Select the ingest protocol. Use a protocol supported by the encoder and the YouTube ingest endpoint you selected. YouTube documents RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; select YouTube’s RTMPS URL specifically if you want that encrypted connection. HLS requires encoder support and has higher latency than continuous RTMP.
  6. Start privately or use the preview first. Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview for both steady audio and a visible picture. For a scheduled broadcast, wait for the preview and select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready.
  7. Monitor the broadcast. Watch stream health and listen for audio interruptions. YouTube identifies issues including low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. If the feed or network drops, check whether your encoder reconnects and whether YouTube receives the stream again.
  8. End the stream cleanly. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the broadcast in YouTube Studio as appropriate. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the general workflow: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”

Choose settings for your encoder and Pi

There is no single safe command or universal bitrate to give for every radio stream and Raspberry Pi combination. The key settings depend on the encoder, the station’s input format, the visual source, the board’s available resources, and YouTube’s current ingest settings. Check the encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s Live Control Room recommendations for the specific broadcast rather than copying settings intended for a different source.

  • Audio input and reconnects: Verify that the encoder can read the station’s exact URL and audio format, and determine how it behaves if the station stops responding. A reconnect for the radio input is separate from reconnecting the encoder’s output to YouTube.
  • Video source: Make sure the encoder combines the radio audio and visual into one audiovisual stream. A radio feed alone does not provide the picture expected in a YouTube video stream.
  • Output and ingest: Choose a protocol and output settings supported by both your encoder and the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. If using RTMPS, use the RTMPS server URL rather than assuming an RTMP URL is encrypted.
  • Pi capacity: Test the chosen combination of input decoding, visual processing, and output encoding on your specific Pi and operating system. The available documentation does not establish a minimum model for this pipeline.

Check stream health and troubleshoot problems

Symptom What to check Practical response
YouTube receives no stream Whether the encoder is running; whether the stream URL and key match the current broadcast; whether the encoder supports the selected ingest protocol. Recheck the broadcast’s URL and key in YouTube Studio and the encoder’s server and key fields. If you selected RTMPS, make sure the RTMPS URL is configured.
Preview has audio but no picture Whether a visual source is configured and included in the encoder’s output. Add or enable the still, visualizer, loop, or camera source, then check the preview again before going live.
Preview has picture but no audio Whether the station URL is reachable and its audio format is supported; whether the encoder has selected that feed as its audio input. Test the feed and input selection in the encoder. YouTube identifies missing audio as a stream-health issue.
Audio stops or cuts out The station feed, network connection, and encoder’s input reconnect behavior. Determine whether the interruption starts at the source or in the Pi-to-YouTube output path; check the encoder’s logs and reconnect settings.
Stream health flags low video bitrate or frame-rate mismatch The encoder’s output against the settings and health information shown in Live Control Room. Adjust the output using the encoder’s documentation and YouTube’s current recommendations, then verify the preview and health status again.
A copyright notice or interruption appears Whether you hold rebroadcast rights for the station and music, and whether the relevant rights holder requires Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that public access to the station or a license alone resolves the issue. Contact the station or rights holder and follow YouTube’s notice and appeal processes where applicable.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, not for ingesting a live internet-radio feed. It is an option if you have a recording you are allowed to rebroadcast and want that video to loop without leaving a Pi or home computer running: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
