You can use a Raspberry Pi to send a church camera or mixer feed to YouTube Live, but the Pi is only one part of a continuous-streaming system. You also need a compatible capture and encoding path, a clean audio feed, stable upload bandwidth, YouTube’s stream URL and key, and a plan to monitor and recover the stream. Raspberry Pi and YouTube document the relevant components, but neither certifies a complete Pi setup for unattended 24/7 operation.

Decide what the Pi will capture before choosing equipment

Start by tracing the video and audio you want viewers to receive. The right setup depends on the church’s existing cameras, mixer, network and intended schedule; there is no single bill of materials that fits every sanctuary.

  • Raspberry Pi camera: A Pi camera can connect directly to a compatible camera connector. Raspberry Pi lists Camera Module 3 as a 12-megapixel option. Check the connector cable for your board family: Raspberry Pi specifies standard-to-standard for flagship boards through Pi 4, and standard-to-mini for Pi 5 and Zero. See Raspberry Pi camera documentation.
  • Existing camera, USB camera or video mixer: Confirm that the specific output can be captured by the input device and software you plan to use. The title alone does not establish whether a capture interface is needed or which one will work.
  • Audio: Ask the sound operator for a clean feed from the church mixer where possible. A sermon is only useful to viewers if speech is intelligible; do not assume a camera microphone will capture clear audio throughout the room.

Before relying on the system, verify that the selected source, capture path and encoder work together at the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

Choose a Pi-compatible encoding route

Raspberry Pi’s documented rpicam-apps network-streaming example uses different encoding paths by board generation: a V4L2 H.264 hardware encoder for Pi 4B or earlier, and x264 software encoding for Pi 5. Its documentation recommends the libav backend for many network-streaming use cases and shows GStreamer pipelines for these distinct paths. These examples demonstrate documented capabilities; they are not a certified or tested YouTube configuration. Review Raspberry Pi’s network-streaming documentation, then confirm the chosen source and software work on your actual board.

The documented rpicam-vid -t 0 option captures indefinitely. An indefinite capture process does not by itself make a reliable 24/7 service: it does not prove the encoder, network, power supply or YouTube connection will recover correctly after an interruption.

Configure the YouTube Live ingest

  1. Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until just before a service.
  2. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Studio. Use the stream’s encoder settings to obtain the server URL and stream key.
  3. Enter the URL and key in the encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s password/address. Keep it private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Follow YouTube’s steps in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Start the encoder and inspect YouTube’s preview and health status. Confirm that the expected picture and sound arrive before you make the stream public or start the event.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use it where the selected encoder supports it and enter the ingest details exactly as YouTube Studio presents them.

Set a conservative video and audio profile

Use YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations as a starting point, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain the stream. Its guidance, accessed in 2026, specifies 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. The same guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

  • Check the church’s sustained upload capacity and leave headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio and network variation.
  • Test at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use; if the uplink cannot sustain them reliably, lower the profile rather than sacrificing continuity.
  • Test speech, music if used, and representative movement in the frame. Listen for clipping, hum, low volume and sync problems as well as checking picture quality.
  • Prefer a wired network connection when the installation allows it, then repeat the test during representative church use.

YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A brief preview is not enough if the real service has different motion, audio levels or network load.

Plan monitoring, recordings and recovery for long runs

A Pi is not a guarantee of unattended reliability. Assign someone to check picture, sound and YouTube’s stream health, and verify that any local recording is actually being written and growing. Before depending on a continuous setup, test what happens after an encoder stop, a network interruption and a power interruption; establish who can restart the system and how viewers will be informed.

YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends a local archive backup. For a true continuous stream, plan local recording and file rotation separately rather than treating YouTube’s archive as the only copy. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and YouTube Live streaming tips.

Check rights for everything viewers will hear or see

A sermon may be original, but hymns, intro or background music, projected video and recorded clips can contain third-party material. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream. Even when you have a license, the rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID for the material to avoid interruption. Check rights before going live and consult YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.
