You can use a Raspberry Pi as a headless host for an encoder that sends a music-and-video feed to YouTube Live. Prepare the Pi, create a YouTube live stream, enter its server URL and stream key in your encoder, and test the complete setup before relying on it. Neither YouTube nor Raspberry Pi documentation guarantees that a particular Pi and encoder can sustain a specific 24/7 configuration. You must also secure the rights for every track and confirm any Content ID allowlisting required by the rights holder.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi model, boot media, and a power supply specified for that exact model.
- Raspberry Pi OS Lite and a way to access the Pi remotely, such as SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect.
- A stable internet connection whose sustained upload capacity you have measured under realistic conditions.
- An encoder configured to send to YouTube Live using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio.
- Music and other material you have permission to broadcast, plus any required Content ID allowlisting.
Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB of boot media for Raspberry Pi OS Lite. Its current getting-started guidance specifies a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B; do not assume one model’s supply guidance applies to another. A case and Ethernet cable are optional. Ethernet is a practical choice if it suits your setup, but the cited documentation does not quantify a reliability advantage for this use.
India’s local ISP performance, data caps, electrical supply, product availability, and applicable music rights vary. The published sources do not establish a universal local threshold or settle those questions, so check your own connection, equipment and rights.
Prepare the Raspberry Pi for headless use
- Install Raspberry Pi Imager. Use it to prepare boot media with Raspberry Pi OS Lite, the command-line-only option intended for headless setups.
- Set up remote access while imaging. Configure a hostname, account, network connection, and SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect in the Imager workflow. This lets you manage the Pi without attaching a monitor and keyboard for routine access.
- Connect the hardware. Insert the prepared boot media, connect the model-appropriate power supply, and connect the Pi to your network. Choose Ethernet or Wi-Fi based on your layout, then measure the connection you will actually use.
- Log in remotely and update your system. Use the remote-access method you enabled and follow the current Raspberry Pi OS guidance for software updates. Keep the system’s credentials private.
- Choose storage for your operating needs. The 8 GB recommendation is for OS Lite boot media, not a guarantee that it will suit all logs, files or other services you add. Choose additional capacity if your operating system and maintenance needs require it; no specific storage endurance benefit is established here.
Raspberry Pi’s getting-started guide covers imaging, headless access, networking and model-specific power requirements.

Create the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream in Live Control Room. First-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, according to YouTube’s current encoder instructions.
- Copy the ingest details. In the stream’s settings, copy the server URL and stream key and enter them into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or expose it in terminal output.
- Set the scheduled broadcast’s visibility and timing. Confirm the stream’s audience, visibility and schedule in Live Control Room before testing. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for its preview to appear; then use Live Control Room to go live.
- Plan session length and archiving. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour session will be archived as one video. Test the current Studio workflow and plan session restarts or scheduled broadcasts accordingly; platform behavior can change.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the server URL and stream key workflow, scheduling, activation and archive duration.
Choose encoder settings and test the stream
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 as video ingest options; the settings below give two published H.264 profiles. These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not proof that a given Pi can encode them continuously or that your ISP can sustain them.

| Profile | YouTube video ingest bitrate guidance | Audio guidance |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps minimum; 4 Mbps recommended | Stereo: 128 kbps recommended at 44.1 kHz |
| H.264, 720p30 | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended | Stereo: 128 kbps recommended at 44.1 kHz |
The bitrate figures are YouTube’s current encoder-setting recommendations, accessed in 2026. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds. Select the profile that your encoder and Pi can handle after testing; do not select a higher setting just because your internet speed test briefly reaches it.
- Start with the visual requirements. A static image or simple visual loop can keep video needs modest. Choose 480p30 or 720p30 based on what viewers need to see and what your verified encoder can sustain.
- Set the encoder protocol and stream parameters. Choose RTMPS when available, set constant bitrate, set the keyframe interval to two seconds, and use an audio format and bitrate supported by the encoder. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps for stereo at 44.1 kHz.
- Measure upload capacity under real conditions. Test at the time of day and over the network path you expect to use, and leave headroom rather than matching the stream bitrate to a best-case speed-test result. A speed test does not guarantee a stable long-running connection.
- Run a real private or unlisted test. Send the intended audio and visuals, check the YouTube preview and stream health, and observe the Pi’s behavior over an extended period. Validate the exact board, encoder, profile and network combination; no Pi-specific FFmpeg command or verified continuous-performance table is established by the sources cited here.
- Document recovery steps. Confirm that you can remotely reach the Pi, restart the encoder, and restore a broadcast after a network or power interruption before scheduling unattended operation.

Clear music rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. A match can replace the stream image, trigger a warning to stop using the content, or lead to a temporary interruption or termination if the content continues. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike may also terminate a stream.
If you have licensed third-party material, YouTube says to ask the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A stream can still be interrupted if your channel is not allowlisted. Secure the appropriate broadcast rights for each track and confirm allowlisting requirements with the rights holder before putting music on air. A subscription or permission for personal listening does not, by itself, establish that you may rebroadcast the music. This is not a full legal analysis of music broadcasting in India.

Control: headless command line or desktop
OS Lite is intended for headless use and reduces the need for a desktop interface. Choose remote command-line management if you are comfortable maintaining the Pi that way; otherwise, use a setup and remote-access workflow you can operate reliably.
Power and recovery
The cited setup guidance specifies a power supply appropriate to the Pi model but does not size a backup system or quantify Indian outage conditions. If your location has interruptions, decide whether a suitably specified backup arrangement is appropriate and test recovery behavior rather than assuming the stream will resume correctly.
Shorter sessions or longer broadcasts
Session scheduling affects both how you manage restarts and what you can expect from YouTube’s archive behavior. Because YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, test the current Live Control Room workflow and decide how to divide longer broadcasts before depending on a single 24-hour session.

Troubleshoot common failures
- Live streaming is not available in Studio: First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Allow for that delay and verify the channel’s Live Control Room status before your planned start.
- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key, and confirm that it is sending to the scheduled event. Regenerate or replace a key only through YouTube Studio and update the encoder securely.
- The preview drops or stream health degrades: Check sustained upload capacity and local network stability, then test with a lower profile or more headroom. Confirm that the Pi and encoder remain stable under the selected profile.
- The stream image is replaced or broadcast is interrupted: YouTube may have detected third-party content. Stop or change the material, resolve rights with the rights holder, and confirm any required Content ID allowlisting before resuming.
- A long broadcast does not appear as one archived video: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; do not assume a 24-hour session will be archived as a single video. Check the current Studio handling and use tested session scheduling.
- The Pi becomes unreachable after a power or network event: Restore network and power access, reconnect through SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect, and restart the encoder according to your tested recovery procedure. The documentation does not promise uninterrupted operation for a specific 24/7 configuration.
