In Python, create a Proxy in manual mode, set its endpoint, and assign it to options.proxy before starting WebDriver. This setting routes browser traffic; it does not configure Selenium Manager’s separate network traffic for driver or browser management.
Configure a proxy for a Selenium browser session
This Python example follows Selenium’s documented Options pattern. The proxy endpoint is illustrative; replace it with an endpoint provided by your organization or proxy service.

Java and Chrome
The configuration belongs in the browser’s Options object in Java as well. Selenium’s Browser Options guide demonstrates setting the standard proxy capability on Chrome options. ChromeDriver accepts standard WebDriver capabilities and Chrome-specific settings through ChromeOptions; see ChromeDriver capabilities.

Choose the right proxy layer
Proxy settings can apply to different traffic, and configuring one layer does not configure the other.

Selenium Manager’s proxy configuration is for Manager’s own network connections; it does not, by itself, route browser page requests through that proxy. See the Selenium Manager documentation.
Select a proxy mode and endpoint
The Python Proxy API exposes these proxy types:
- MANUAL: Specify proxy endpoints, as in the example above.
- PAC: Use a proxy autoconfiguration URL.
- SYSTEM: Use system proxy settings where supported.
- AUTODETECT: Request proxy autodetection where supported.
- DIRECT: Connect directly rather than using a proxy.
- UNSPECIFIED: Leave the proxy type unspecified.
The Python API also exposes fields for HTTP and SSL proxy addresses, SOCKS address and credentials/version, PAC URL, and bypass addresses (noProxy). These are API options, not a guarantee that every browser, driver, Selenium binding, or version supports every field or behavior identically. Match the protocol, host, port, and mode to the instructions for your actual proxy and target browser.

Handle authentication carefully
Do not assume that putting a username and password into a proxy URL will work across Selenium and browser combinations. The cited Selenium references do not establish a universal method for authenticated HTTP proxies. The Python API lists SOCKS username and password fields, but that does not prove equivalent support for HTTP proxy authentication.

- Keep credentials out of source control, error reports, and logs.
- Test authentication separately from basic proxy connectivity using an approved endpoint.
Common problems and fixes
The browser still cannot reach the site
Check that the browser session—not just Selenium Manager—has the proxy configured. Verify the endpoint, port, protocol, and proxy type against the provider’s or administrator’s instructions. In a corporate environment, ask whether browser traffic must use a company proxy; Selenium documents strict corporate network restrictions as a proxy use case.
Driver or browser setup fails before a window opens
This can be a Selenium Manager network issue rather than a browser-session proxy issue. Configure Manager’s proxy separately using its documented --proxy, proxy, or SE_PROXY configuration.

The proxy accepts connections but rejects the session
Check whether the endpoint requires authentication and whether the selected browser, driver, and binding support the provider’s required authentication method. The basic manual example only specifies an endpoint; it is not an authenticated-proxy recipe.
Traffic appears to bypass the proxy
Confirm that the proxy capability is attached to the exact Options object passed to the WebDriver constructor. Also check whether the proxy configuration includes bypass addresses or whether the target browser applies system settings differently.
Verify the route safely
Use a permitted test endpoint and an approved diagnostic method to confirm that requests take the intended network route. A successful Selenium startup alone does not prove that the page request used the expected proxy. Do not test against services or networks without authorization.

The article describes Selenium 4’s browser Options approach. The Python API reference identifies Selenium 4.49.0, but Selenium documentation versions can advance; check the current reference for your installed version.
Does setting Selenium Manager’s proxy also route browser traffic?
No. Selenium Manager’s proxy controls its own network connections; browser requests require the proxy capability in the WebDriver session options.
