To use a portable SSD, connect it to a compatible port, open it in your device’s file manager, and copy files as you would with other storage. Before formatting the drive, choose a file system that suits the devices and task—and back up anything you need to keep, because erasing removes the drive’s data.
Connect the SSD and find it
Check the cable and port
Use a cable or adapter that fits both the SSD and an available port on your computer or phone. Macs support external storage connected by USB or Thunderbolt, but a connector’s shape alone does not establish that a particular device, cable, or port supports a given data speed. Check the documentation for the SSD and host device if you are unsure.
Open the drive
On a Mac, look for the SSD in Finder, including its sidebar under Locations. On iPhone, open the Files app and select the connected drive under Locations. Apple’s iPhone instructions require a supported format and a single data partition; some USB-C iPhone setups may need a powered USB hub if the drive does not supply its own power. See Apple’s external storage guidance for iPhone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose a file system for the job
The right format depends on which devices will use the SSD and what you intend to do with it. Confirm that all intended devices support the format before changing it.

| General use with a Mac | APFS | Apple identifies APFS as the default file system for macOS 10.13 or later. Apple’s file-system guidance. |
| Sharing files between Mac and Windows | exFAT | Apple identifies exFAT as Windows-compatible. Check support on each device. Apple’s file-system guidance. |
| Time Machine backups | APFS or APFS Encrypted preferred | Apple’s Time Machine guidance recommends these formats for a backup disk. The Time Machine volume is reserved for backups. Apple’s Time Machine guidance. |
| Final Cut Pro, Motion, or Compressor media work on Mac | APFS | Apple recommends APFS for external storage used with these apps; exFAT or FAT32 drives may not perform as expected. Apple’s format guidance for these apps. |
Know what formatting does
Formatting or erasing a drive permanently removes its existing data. Copy files you want to keep somewhere else and verify the copies before you erase or reformat the SSD. If you need a drive for both Time Machine and ordinary files, Apple describes adding a separate APFS volume on the same physical device; the Time Machine volume itself remains dedicated to backups. Apple explains Time Machine disk setup.
Transfer files safely
- Connect the SSD and open it in Finder or, on iPhone, Files under Locations.
- Copy the files or folders to or from the SSD using the usual file-management controls on your device.
- Open a few transferred files from the destination drive to confirm the copy worked before deleting the originals.
- Eject the drive using the device’s normal eject control before disconnecting it, when available.
Fix a Mac that can read but not save to the SSD
If files open but cannot be copied onto the drive, check the following before considering an erase:

- Free space: Confirm the SSD has room for the files.
- File system: macOS may read an NTFS-formatted external drive without being able to write to it. A read-only result may therefore reflect the format rather than a defective SSD. Apple’s external-drive troubleshooting guidance.
- Permissions: Check whether your account has permission to write to the drive.
- Disk errors: Use Disk Utility to check the drive for errors.
A drive configured for Time Machine may be limited to that purpose. Do not erase or reformat to troubleshoot until you have protected any files that are not backed up. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.

Time Machine
Apple supports external storage connected directly to a Mac as a Time Machine destination and prefers APFS or APFS Encrypted for the backup disk. If the SSD currently holds files, protect them elsewhere before preparing it for backups, since reformatting erases existing data. Apple’s Time Machine instructions.

- Up to 2000MB/s read and 2000MB/s write to transfer files fast for a smooth workflow (Performance on Mac and other systems not supporting USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 may be lower)
- The drive's MagSafe-compatible design makes it easy to attach to your compatible smartphone. An additional metal ring accessory gives any device a magnetic surface to attach to
- Supports recording in Apple ProRes at 4K120FPS, and Samsung Pro Video 8K 30FPS
- Includes free access to the Lexar App to easily auto back up your media and expand the storage of your mobile device
- Rated IP65 for dust and water resistance, and is drop resistant up to 3M
External startup disk
Installing macOS on an external drive and starting a Mac from it is a separate, advanced setup—not a necessary step for ordinary file storage. Apple recommends APFS for modern macOS, especially on SSDs; installation, startup security settings, and model-specific requirements may apply. Apple’s guidance on using an external startup disk.

There is no guaranteed transfer rate based only on a USB-C or Thunderbolt connector. Performance depends on the SSD, cable, host port, and device working together. Compare the published specifications for the exact drive and the port you will use; do not assume the connector’s appearance proves its data capability.
