To change prerecorded videos without ending a YouTube livestream, change the program in your encoder—not the YouTube player. In OBS Studio, add the files to a VLC Video source, set their order, and use the source’s loop option if you want the list to repeat. OBS can advance through that playlist, but its documented playlist controls do not schedule a particular video for a chosen clock time.
Know which playlist you are scheduling
“Playlist” can mean two different things here. A YouTube playlist is for someone watching videos in the YouTube player; its repeat control affects that viewer’s playback, not the video your encoder sends to a live broadcast. An OBS media playlist is a list of files that OBS plays into the live program. YouTube’s scheduled broadcast is the live event itself, not a schedule for the files in OBS.
YouTube’s live-streaming API also treats a broadcast event and the stream carrying video as separate resources. Changing the encoded program is different from ending the broadcast (YouTube Live Streaming API reference).

Set up an ordered playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. Match their architectures: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. See OBS’s Media Sources guide.
- Choose the scene that is going out to YouTube. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to that scene. The source is the playlist that supplies the video; a YouTube playlist is not a substitute.
- Add the media files in the order you want them to play. Turn off Shuffle Playlist if sequence matters. Leave it on only if you want randomized playback.
- Set whether the list repeats. Turn on Loop Playlist to start again at the beginning after the last item. Leave it off for a one-pass sequence.
- Choose how playback behaves when the source is hidden. OBS exposes visibility behavior that can determine whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while the source is not visible. Set this deliberately if you switch scenes or hide the source.
- Start or connect OBS to the scheduled or active YouTube broadcast. Check the OBS preview and YouTube stream health. Keep the encoder session and broadcast running when you want the same event to continue while its video content changes.
OBS describes the VLC source’s order, shuffle, and loop behavior, but those controls do not target a specific wall-clock time. They advance the list based on playback, not on a timetable.

Change videos during an ongoing livestream
For a list that should advance when a video ends, let the VLC playlist play through. To change the program yourself, switch the active OBS scene or media source while leaving the broadcast and encoder session running. The change is made in the outgoing OBS program; ending the YouTube event is a separate action.
If you need different program blocks—such as one scene for a morning block and another for an evening block—configure separate OBS scenes or sources and use an automation or control method to switch them. A 2023 OBS forum discussion suggested Advanced Scene Switcher macros for scene transitions, but that is community advice rather than an official guarantee of exact-time playlist behavior. Confirm the current tool’s trigger and timer behavior, then rehearse in a private or unlisted stream before relying on it live.

Can OBS switch a video at an exact time?
Not through the documented VLC playlist order, shuffle, or loop settings. Those settings describe how a list plays, not how to select an item at a particular wall-clock time. For an exact-time transition, use a separate automation or control layer and verify that its trigger is genuinely tied to the time you intend—not merely to elapsed playback time or the end of a media file.

Can I add videos to the playlist while OBS is live?
That depends on how the playlist refresh behaves in your current setup. An OBS forum thread opened in 2023 described inconsistent refresh behavior for one operator; it does not establish a universal limitation. If you need to add or reorder files during a broadcast, verify the change in your own OBS preview and, where possible, test it in a private or unlisted run before using it on air.

Check copyright and reused-content issues
Looping or scheduling a video does not grant permission to use its music, footage, or other material. Before putting a prerecorded video on air, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the video and audio. Also consider YouTube’s rules and monetization policies for reused content; permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Troubleshoot playlist switching
- The next file does not play: Check the VLC playlist order and whether the current item has finished; confirm that the source is visible and its visibility behavior is not pausing or stopping playback.
- The sequence plays in the wrong order: Reorder the files in the VLC Video source and make sure shuffle is off.
- The list stops after the last file: Enable Loop Playlist if it should repeat. If it should play once, stopping at the end is expected.
- The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC and make sure its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- A playlist edit does not appear while live: Check the OBS preview and verify reload behavior in a private or unlisted test. The reported forum experience is not proof that all setups behave the same way.
- A video changes, but the YouTube event ends: Check whether the broadcast or encoder session was stopped. Changing the OBS scene or media source is not the same operation as ending the live event.
- An exact-time transition happens early or late: Check whether the automation uses wall-clock time, elapsed time, or a media event as its trigger. Rehearse the same trigger conditions before relying on it.
