FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can send compatible gaming VODs to YouTube Live one after another, but a finite playlist file does not by itself guarantee an endless rotation. Build the playlist, send it through FFmpeg to a YouTube live event, and test the repeat behavior with your FFmpeg version and actual files before relying on it for a long-running stream.
What the playlist file does—and does not do
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file listing media files and presents their packets sequentially, as if they had been joined into one input. That makes it useful for playing a series of gaming VODs into an encoder. It is not the same as a filter that normalizes mismatched sources, and the documented sequential behavior does not establish that a finite list restarts forever. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Plan for two separate jobs: create a valid sequential input, then verify a repeat mechanism for your specific FFmpeg build and media. Do not assume that reaching the last entry will automatically take FFmpeg back to the first.
Check and prepare your gaming VODs
Keep all source files at stable paths for the duration of the stream. The concat demuxer works at the packet level, so inputs should have matching streams and compatible codecs and time bases. If one VOD has a different stream layout or encoding, concatenation may fail or produce a bad transition; normalize or transcode the files to compatible outputs rather than assuming the demuxer will reconcile them.

Duration metadata matters: FFmpeg uses durations to calculate timestamps for later files, and inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. The concat format supports a duration directive to override a file’s duration when necessary. Inspect the files and verify transitions in a test before leaving the stream unattended.
Write the concat playlist
Create a plain-text script with one file directive for each VOD, in the desired playback order. For automatic format recognition, the optional header must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 on the first line—with no leading spaces or byte-order mark.

Those paths are examples, not tested media. Escape or quote paths containing spaces or special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat-script syntax. This escaping is separate from your shell’s quoting rules: quoting a shell command does not fix a malformed path inside the playlist. Consult the FFmpeg documentation on script syntax.

Configure YouTube Live and FFmpeg output
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the current status in YouTube Studio because eligibility rules can change. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.

Create the event and protect the stream key
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or select the live event, and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Configure FFmpeg to send its encoded output to that event. Treat the key like a password: do not include it in screenshots, public terminal logs, or shared commands. If exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live settings. See YouTube’s instructions for setting up a live stream with an encoder.
Choose ingest settings for your actual output
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so select the matching row in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than treating one figure as universal.

- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p60 at 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended, and 1080p30 at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published guidance, accessed 2026-10-03—not guarantees of quality or delivery. Choose settings your upload connection can sustain, with headroom for normal fluctuations.

Once the sequential input is configured, send it to the selected event using FFmpeg and the event’s stream URL and key. The exact command depends on the files, desired output codec and resolution, and the repeat method verified for your installed FFmpeg version; the available documentation here does not establish a universal, safe infinite-loop command. Test the command locally with the intended media before using it for a long stream.

Make the playlist repeat—and verify it
A playlist containing each file once is finite. When its last file ends, do not assume the concat demuxer will restart from the first entry. The FFmpeg concat documentation describes sequential concatenation, not a guaranteed endless cycle. Select a repeat approach only after checking it against the documentation for your FFmpeg build and testing it with representative VODs; verify that playback returns to the first file and continues without timestamp, audio, or video problems.
For a dependable rotation, test beyond the first pass. Observe at least one complete trip through the playlist and the transition back to its start. If files differ, resolve compatibility and duration issues before extending the run.
Test the event before depending on it
- Use representative footage. Include typical movement and audio, plus the transitions between different VODs.
- Check the YouTube preview. Confirm video and audio arrive at the intended event and that the picture, sound, and pacing are acceptable.
- Watch stream health. Look for ingest warnings or interruptions in Live Control Room while the test is running.
- Verify playlist continuity. Confirm each VOD starts correctly, audio remains continuous, and the repeat method returns to the beginning as intended.
- Check the event and any local archive. Confirm the stream appears as expected and that any recording you rely on exists.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than treating a successful connection as proof the entire stream is healthy. See its encoder guidance and streaming troubleshooting and testing help.
Common problems and fixes
- The playlist stops after the last VOD: the concat script lists a finite sequence; endless repetition is not guaranteed by the demuxer. Test a repeat mechanism supported by your FFmpeg version.
- FFmpeg cannot open a listed file: check the path as written in the concat script, including escaping or quoting for spaces and special characters. Confirm the file exists at that stable path.
- Playback breaks or artifacts appear at a transition: inspect stream layout, codec, and time-base compatibility. Check duration metadata; inaccurate durations can shift timestamps. Normalize incompatible files and use a duration override where appropriate.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: check that the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR mode, and keyframe interval match YouTube’s current guidance and that your connection can sustain the bitrate.
- The event receives no signal: verify the event’s stream URL and key, and that FFmpeg is sending to the selected event. If the key was exposed, reset it.
- Video arrives without usable audio, or transitions sound wrong: test the audio streams in each file and inspect the Live Control Room preview across file boundaries before a long run.
