You can use a NAS to store the music videos for a 24/7 YouTube stream, but the NAS is the library—not the broadcaster. A practical setup is NAS shared folder → computer running OBS → YouTube Live. OBS reads the files over your local network, loops a playlist, and sends the encoded stream to YouTube over your internet connection. YouTube does not read the videos directly from your NAS.

How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works

The NAS holds your cleared video files in a shared folder. A separate computer accesses that folder over the local network and runs OBS as the playback and encoding stage. OBS sends the live output to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. This workflow applies Synology’s documented SMB file access alongside OBS’s playlist source and YouTube’s encoder connection instructions; it is not a reliability test of every NAS, computer, or software build.

There are two network paths to keep healthy: NAS-to-computer traffic on your local network, and computer-to-YouTube traffic over your internet upload connection. A fast internet connection does not fix an unreliable NAS share, and a fast local network does not compensate for insufficient upload capacity. Synology’s SMB guidance explains accessing NAS files from a computer.

Prepare the NAS video library

  1. Create a shared folder on the NAS for the videos you intend to play. Enable a file-sharing method that the encoder computer can access; Synology’s example uses SMB.
  2. Use a dedicated account for the computer or workflow, granting only the folder access it needs. This is general security practice, not a specific Synology permission recipe.
  3. Connect from the encoder computer and confirm that it can open and play every intended file. Keep the share on your local network rather than exposing it to the public internet.
  4. Plan capacity and recovery. Estimate the current library size and expected growth, then decide how you will recover files after a drive or NAS failure. RAID can help with availability after some drive failures, but it is not a separate backup. The right capacity and redundancy depend on your files and recovery goals.

The NAS may also serve other workloads, but do not assume it can encode a continuous YouTube stream itself. The documented arrangement here uses a separate computer for OBS. A NAS model’s ability to run an encoder continuously would need model- and software-specific verification; media-server limitations, such as those discussed in Plex’s bandwidth and transcoding guidance, are context rather than a benchmark for OBS-to-YouTube encoding.

Build a looping playlist in OBS

  1. Install OBS and VLC on the encoder computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed; without it, the source may not appear. See OBS Media Sources.
  2. Add a VLC Video source to the scene you will use for the broadcast. Add the NAS-hosted video files to its playlist. Confirm that the computer can access the share while signed in as the account that will run OBS.
  3. Set the playlist behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so playback returns to the beginning at the end. OBS documents looping as enabled by default and shuffle as disabled by default; check the source settings rather than relying on defaults. Enable shuffle only if you want a different order each cycle.
  4. Check picture and sound. Preview the scene, verify that each file plays, and listen for gaps, clipping, or unexpected silence when one clip ends and another begins. Leave OBS running long enough to observe transitions before scheduling a continuous broadcast.

For more complex presentation, you can create and arrange scenes in OBS, but keep the playback path simple enough that you can identify whether a freeze is coming from the NAS share, the media source, OBS, or the internet connection.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder with those values.
  2. Enter the server URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not put it in a public scene, screen recording, or shared configuration. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
  3. Choose the resolution and frame rate that your computer can encode and your upload connection can sustain. Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as a starting point, then validate the actual stream in YouTube Studio.
  4. Start a private or otherwise appropriate preflight test, inspect YouTube’s stream health, and check the audio and video from a viewer’s perspective before making the stream public.

Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframes

YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate, supported codecs including H.264, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (not over four seconds). Its current H.264 guidance recommends the following video bitrates; these are platform recommendations, not a measurement of what your particular Indian music channel requires.

Output YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 4 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 14 Mbps

Set OBS to a constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval, and select RTMPS if offered by the encoder workflow. Leave headroom beyond the video bitrate for audio and network overhead. Test sustained upload speed rather than relying on a headline plan speed, and choose a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection fluctuates. YouTube recommends an upload-speed check and a preflight stream with comparable movement and audio; see its encoder settings guidance.

Clear the music and video rights before going live

Indian music streams can involve separate rights in the composition, sound recording, performance, and video. Verify that your permissions cover each item, the territories where the stream is available, live transmission, and any archive or replay you intend to keep. Buying a track or having a general music license does not by itself establish that YouTube livestreaming and archiving are covered.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A stream can be interrupted or replaced by a placeholder when a match is detected; even licensed material may be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s live copyright guidance and resolve rights and allowlisting questions with the relevant rights holders before relying on a long-running broadcast.

Plan continuity, outages, and archives

A 24/7 plan needs more than a playlist that loops. Decide who or what will respond if OBS stops, the encoder computer reboots, the NAS share disappears, or the internet connection drops. Monitor the encoder, NAS access, and YouTube stream health, and document how to restart the broadcast and verify that it is actually live. This is operational planning, not a guarantee that a NAS-and-OBS configuration will run without interruption.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That fact does not establish a complete archive or restart procedure for a 24/7 channel. Decide how you will handle stream sessions, archives, and handoffs, and confirm the current YouTube Studio behavior for your channel before depending on recordings being retained as intended. See the YouTube encoder setup page.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • The VLC Video source is missing: install VLC on the computer running OBS, then reopen or refresh OBS and check the source list. The source requires VLC.
  • Playlist files fail or stop after a reboot: check that the NAS share is mounted and reachable under the same computer account that launches OBS. Test file access again before starting the stream.
  • Playback stutters while YouTube upload looks healthy: investigate local NAS access, the computer’s ability to read the files, and encoder load separately from internet upload. YouTube’s stream health cannot prove that the local file path is reliable.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers: run a sustained upload test, lower output resolution or frame rate if needed, and repeat a preflight with similar motion and audio. Keep bitrate within the connection’s stable capacity.
  • The stream will not connect: confirm that the URL and stream key are current, that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube stream, and that the key has not been exposed or replaced.
  • The stream is interrupted despite a license: contact the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting and check YouTube’s match notice. A license alone may not prevent an interruption.
  • The archive is missing or incomplete: do not assume a 24/7 session produces one complete recording. Review YouTube’s current archive handling and decide on a session and retention plan.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a home computer and network to be part of the broadcast chain, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not broadcast a camera feed. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
