You can play drum sounds in FL Studio with an ordinary MIDI keyboard: enable the keyboard as a MIDI input, load FPC, and use its pad key assignments to choose which keys trigger which drums. The keyboard sends notes—not sound—so FPC supplies the drum audio. Because assignments can differ by kit preset, check the mapping before recording.

Connect and enable your MIDI keyboard

  1. Connect a USB MIDI keyboard directly to your computer. For a keyboard with five-pin MIDI ports, connect its MIDI output to a compatible MIDI-to-USB interface’s MIDI input. MIDI carries control data such as notes and knob movements; it does not carry audio, as Image-Line explains in its FL Studio MIDI settings documentation.
  2. Open FL Studio’s Options > MIDI settings, or press F10 and select MIDI settings. Find your keyboard under Input, select it, and enable it.
  3. Press a key on the keyboard and check for MIDI activity in the settings window. If the device is not listed by name, try the generic controller option. Install the keyboard manufacturer’s driver if the device requires one.

Load FPC and map keys to drum pads

FPC is Image-Line’s multi-layer drum machine plugin. It has two banks of 16 pads per patch, and each pad can be assigned a MIDI key and octave. The empty FPC preset starts with pads assigned to appropriate General MIDI keys, but other presets may use different assignments. Image-Line documents these controls in its FPC manual.

  1. Add FPC to a Channel Rack channel.
  2. In FPC, select the pad you want to play and inspect its Play Key/Octave or MIDI key assignment.
  3. Change the assignment if you want a different key, then repeat for each pad you plan to use.
  4. Select the FPC channel and play the assigned keys. Test a few notes individually so you know which keys trigger which sounds.

The assignment is between a MIDI note and an FPC pad; the keyboard does not need dedicated drum pads. If a key triggers the wrong sound, check the selected channel, the FPC pad assignment, and its octave.

Record a drum pattern or enter notes step by step

To capture a live performance, select the FPC channel, start recording into a pattern, and play the mapped keys. The notes appear in the Piano roll for editing. If you do not want to record a real-time take, use Step Editing to enter notes individually. Step input works with a controller keyboard or with the computer keyboard when Typing Keyboard to Piano is enabled. Confirm that the Piano roll is the intended target before entering notes. Image-Line describes the relevant workflow in its recording documentation.

Try FL Studio’s on-screen drumpads instead

If you want to test the workflow without playing keys, open View > Touch controller (or use the Touch Controller toolbar button) and select its Drumpads view. The Touch Controller plays the selected channel and can be recorded to the Piano roll; you can customize the pads’ root notes. See Image-Line’s Touch Controller manual.

Troubleshoot common problems

There is no MIDI activity

  • Return to Options > MIDI settings and confirm the keyboard appears under Input and is enabled.
  • For five-pin equipment, verify the keyboard’s MIDI output connects to the interface’s MIDI input, and check that the interface and any required drivers are installed.
  • If the keyboard needs a manufacturer driver, install it and reopen FL Studio’s MIDI settings.

The keys trigger the wrong drums

  • Make sure the FPC channel is selected.
  • Check the selected kit’s pad key assignments and octaves. Presets may not share the same layout.
  • Play notes one at a time to identify the keys assigned to the pads you want.

The notes play, but the pattern is not recorded correctly

  • Confirm the intended channel is selected and recording is enabled.
  • For note-by-note entry, enable Step Editing and verify that the Piano roll is the target.

Do you need a separate drum-pad controller?

No. An enabled MIDI keyboard can trigger FPC pads, and the Touch Controller provides an on-screen drumpad surface. A dedicated physical pad controller is another possible playing surface, but Image-Line’s documentation does not establish that one option is objectively faster or better. If you do not already have a MIDI keyboard, hardware choice depends on the controls and connection you need. For older five-pin keyboards without a direct computer connection, a compatible MIDI-to-USB interface may be needed; check port compatibility and operating-system driver support.
