Not through the ChatGPT phone app, according to OpenAI’s current Help Center. Its custom MCP apps are “web only,” so you can configure ChatGPT to use a server running on your Mac from ChatGPT on the web, but this documented setup does not let ChatGPT on your phone operate the Mac. If you want to proceed, the supported route for a private Mac is OpenAI’s Secure MCP Tunnel, which connects the server without exposing it to the public internet.
What this setup can—and cannot—do
An MCP server makes a defined set of tools available to an AI client. In this arrangement, your Mac runs the server and ChatGPT on the web connects to it. Depending on the tools you expose, ChatGPT may be able to retrieve information or perform actions on the Mac.
The limitation is the client: OpenAI’s Help Center answers “Are MCP apps available on mobile?” with “No – web only.” That means the custom MCP app workflow described here is for ChatGPT in a web browser, not the ChatGPT mobile app. OpenAI’s documentation does not establish a way for this custom app to make the phone app control your Mac.
Check account and workspace access first
Access depends on your plan and workspace settings. OpenAI’s Help Center says Business and Enterprise/Edu customers can create and test custom apps on the web. Workspace admins or owners control developer mode and publishing; Enterprise/Edu also has role-based access controls. The same documentation says Pro users can connect MCPs with read/fetch permissions in developer mode, while full MCP support—including write actions—is currently for Business and Enterprise/Edu. Full MCP support is described as beta, and availability, permissions, and the interface may change.

Check your workspace’s current settings before planning around a feature. If you do not see developer mode or the app-creation options, your plan, role, or workspace controls may not provide access.
Choose how ChatGPT reaches the Mac
OpenAI documents two connection options for a custom MCP server: provide a server URL or connect using Secure MCP Tunnel. The right choice depends on where the server is hosted and how it is reachable.

For a server running locally or on a private network, the tunnel is the documented option that avoids publishing the server as a public endpoint. The exact steps to run an MCP server on macOS depend on the implementation you choose; OpenAI’s setup guide does not prescribe a particular Mac server or its security configuration.

Connect the server in ChatGPT web
- Prepare a trusted MCP server on the Mac. Install and configure the server using its own official instructions. Decide which tools it should expose, and keep the available set as narrow as the task allows.
- Open ChatGPT in a web browser. Use the account and workspace that have access to custom apps and developer mode. This setup is not performed in the mobile app.
- Create a custom app for the MCP server. In the app setup flow, provide the server URL or select Secure MCP Tunnel, as appropriate for the server’s deployment.
- Configure authentication. Set the authentication method expected by your server. OpenAI cautions that OAuth refresh-token support may require configuration; without refresh access, users may have to sign in again when an access token expires.
- Scan the available tools. Review the tool names and what each one can read or change before enabling or using them. OpenAI’s guide supports SSE and streaming HTTP transports for this setup.
- Test a low-risk operation. Start with a read-only action and confirm that ChatGPT can reach the intended server and return the expected result before trying tools that modify data.
- Publish only if appropriate. Publishing and access are subject to workspace roles and admin controls. Follow your organization’s review process rather than treating a successful test as approval for broader use.
Limit permissions and protect data
An MCP connection can do more than answer questions. Depending on the tools exposed, it may read information shared through app use or take actions such as changing or deleting data. OpenAI warns that an untrusted MCP server could access information or lead ChatGPT to use tools in unintended ways.

- Connect only a server you trust, and inspect the operator’s data-handling terms before sending sensitive information. Data sent to a third-party MCP server is subject to that server’s retention policies.
- Expose only the tools the task requires. Treat write or modify tools as higher risk than read/fetch tools.
- Check the confirmation and action controls available in your workspace. OpenAI describes confirmation prompts for some write or modify actions, but exact controls can vary by plan and change over time; do not assume every consequential action will be blocked automatically.
- For work or shared data, have the workspace admin review the app, its scopes, and who can use it before publishing.
Troubleshoot connection and tool issues
Developer mode or app creation is missing
Confirm your plan, workspace role, and admin settings. Business and Enterprise/Edu workspaces have the documented custom-app creation path; Pro support is more limited to read/fetch permissions. Availability can also vary as beta features and workspace controls evolve.
ChatGPT cannot reach the server
Check that the server is running and that you selected the connection method appropriate to its location. A private or developer-machine server should use the documented Secure MCP Tunnel path rather than being exposed publicly solely for convenience. For URL-based connections, verify the endpoint and server configuration against the server’s own documentation.

Authentication expires
If users have to authenticate repeatedly, check whether the server’s OAuth setup supports refresh tokens. OpenAI notes that without refresh access, a user may need to authenticate again after a token expires.

Run the tool scan again after changing the server’s tool definitions, then review the available tools before using them. The setup guide’s scan step is how ChatGPT discovers the server’s tools; stale definitions can leave the app showing an outdated set.

Do not confuse the ChatGPT app flow with the API
OpenAI also documents an API route for using remote MCP servers. That is a developer integration, not the ChatGPT web custom-app setup described above. The API documentation provides controls such as allowed tools, authorization, and approval requirements. Choose that path only if you are building an application with the API; it does not change the Help Center’s stated mobile limitation for custom MCP apps.
