You can use a low-power laptop to broadcast recorded lessons continuously on YouTube with OBS, provided the laptop can encode your chosen video and the internet connection can sustain the stream. YouTube does not publish a universal minimum laptop specification for this job, so test the exact laptop, lesson file, output settings, and network before relying on it. The laptop must remain powered, connected, cool, and monitored; a cloud service is an alternative when you do not want a computer running at home.
Before you set up a 24/7 stream
A continuous broadcast is a chain of dependencies: the source video, encoder, laptop, power, network, and YouTube must all keep working. A capable processor alone does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming, and a good speed-test result does not prove that a connection will remain stable all day.
- Confirm live access: Your channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- Choose lessons you can broadcast: Use material you own or are authorized to use. Permission to use third-party material does not by itself guarantee that a channel meets YouTube’s reused-content monetization policies.
- Plan for the archive separately: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Do not assume a longer continuous broadcast will be saved as one uninterrupted recording.
- Decide who will monitor it: A 24/7 stream needs a person or process to notice and respond to outages, audio problems, and changes in stream health.
Check whether the laptop can handle the job
Use a compatible hardware encoder if available
Hardware encoding can take encoding work off the CPU. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync on compatible Intel systems, as well as NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to platform and hardware limits. Check the exact laptop, encoder generation, operating system, and OBS compatibility rather than relying on a broad label such as “low power.” A laptop with Intel Quick Sync may be suitable for this role if its particular hardware and software support it; that is a capability to verify, not a recommendation for any specific model.
Keep the output within what the laptop and connection sustain
Start with a simple scene and a resolution and frame rate that the laptop can encode reliably. There is no verified minimum specification that applies to every low-power laptop or source file. Test the actual lesson video and settings you intend to use. If OBS shows rising dropped frames, its documentation identifies an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the selected bitrate as likely issues; reduce the demand or address the connection before depending on the stream.

Prepare the physical setup
For local broadcasting, keep the laptop on reliable power, prevent it from sleeping, and leave its cooling vents unobstructed. Use the most stable internet connection available, and arrange regular checks. These are practical precautions, not a guarantee of uptime or a YouTube requirement.
Set up the recorded lesson stream with OBS
- Enable YouTube live streaming. In YouTube Studio, verify that live streaming is enabled for the channel and check for restrictions. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before the stream is due to start.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Choose the visibility and other stream details appropriate for your audience. For an initial check, use an unlisted test rather than announcing a public broadcast.
- Copy the encoder connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy YouTube’s stream URL and stream key into the corresponding server and key fields in OBS. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who should not control the stream.
- Add the lesson video in OBS. Add the recorded lesson as a media source, select the intended file, and configure the scene so the video fills the output as intended. Check that the file plays and that the audio is present. Keep the scene simple to reduce unnecessary encoding and rendering work.
- Select an encoder and output the laptop can sustain. In OBS output settings, use a compatible hardware encoder if the laptop offers one and OBS supports it. Choose a conservative resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the real machine and connection; do not copy settings chosen for a more powerful computer without testing them.
- Start an unlisted test. Start streaming from OBS and check the Live Control Room preview. Open the watch page on a separate device, check video and audio playback, and inspect OBS stream health and dropped frames. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring preview, playback access, and audio/video quality.
- Switch to the intended broadcast only after the test passes. Set the stream’s intended visibility and schedule, then start it using the same tested file and output configuration. Keep a way to check the stream and respond if it stops or its quality deteriorates.
Keep a local stream running reliably
Watch connection health, not just a speed test
OBS’s dropped-frame indicator is useful during the test and broadcast. Rising dropped frames point to a connection that is unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. Try a lower bitrate or less demanding output, and test again on the connection that will be used continuously. A one-time speed test cannot establish continuous stability.

Plan for power, heat, and human checks
Keep the laptop plugged into reliable power, disable sleep while streaming, and make sure heat can escape. Decide how often someone will check the YouTube preview, watch-page playback, sound, and OBS health. No setup can be described as guaranteed uninterrupted based on the available YouTube and OBS guidance.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream that remains live and a recording that is retained as an archive are separate outcomes. If your lessons need to run for more than 12 hours in one broadcast, verify current YouTube Studio behavior and make a separate recording or scheduling plan rather than counting on one complete archive.

Copyright, reused lessons, and monetization
Only stream lessons and supporting media that you own or are authorized to use. YouTube’s monetization rules also assess whether content is original and authentic; permission alone does not settle reused-content eligibility. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy explanation says: “This type of content has always been ineligible for monetization under our existing policies, where creators are rewarded for original and authentic content.” Repetitive, mass-produced, or minimally transformed reused material can be a policy problem.
Streaming for many hours does not itself guarantee monetization or eligible watch time. In its explanation published August 12, 2026, YouTube says qualified watch hours come from public long-form videos or archived livestreams; hours from unarchived livestreams do not count. Keep the stream public and confirm that the archive exists if you are relying on those hours, while meeting YouTube’s other eligibility and policy requirements.

When a laptop is not the right always-on option
A local laptop gives you direct control, but it must stay powered, connected, cool, and monitored. If you do not want a dedicated computer running continuously, YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre for 24/7 prerecorded-streaming use without a dedicated PC; check its current terms, price, and availability independently.
