Use Linode Object Storage—now Akamai Cloud Object Storage—to store your video files, then use OBS to play them and send the resulting program to YouTube. The bucket is storage, not a live encoder or a YouTube ingest service. You need the endpoint for your actual bucket, a playback method that can read the object without exposing secret credentials, and a test of the complete playback-and-stream path before broadcasting.
What the bucket does—and what it does not do
Akamai Cloud Object Storage is S3-compatible storage for objects organized in buckets. It can hold video assets, but it does not itself play the video, encode a live program, or send a livestream to YouTube. In this workflow, OBS reads or plays the video, composes the stream, and sends that output to YouTube.
Akamai describes Object Storage as suitable for streaming media assets and says reads after successful writes or updates return the latest version. That consistency behavior is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery, a particular bitrate or latency, or livestream reliability. See Akamai Cloud Object Storage documentation for the service overview.
Prepare the bucket and video
1. Select the bucket and confirm its endpoint
Create a bucket or choose an existing one in the region you intend to use. Object Storage hostnames vary by region and endpoint type, so retrieve the hostname shown for your bucket in Cloud Manager or through the API. Do not assume an endpoint copied from another guide applies to your bucket. The provider documents endpoint and connection details in its Object Storage guides.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
2. Upload the video object
Upload the file using a method supported by your workflow. Akamai documents Cloud Manager, Linode CLI, s3cmd, and Cyberduck as options for managing buckets and objects. Check that the upload completed and identify the exact object name and location; a misspelled object path or wrong bucket endpoint can look like a playback failure later.
3. Choose how OBS will be allowed to read it
Objects are private by default. A direct object URL alone does not grant unauthenticated access. If the player requests a URL without S3 credentials, choose an access method deliberately: make an object publicly readable only if public access is acceptable, or use a temporary signed URL if the playback client supports it. Another option is to download or sync the object to the machine running OBS and play the local copy.

Never put an S3 secret access key in an OBS scene URL, browser overlay, screen share, or anywhere that may appear on the livestream. Akamai notes that the Secret Key is shown only once when created; protect it and retain it securely. See Manage access keys.

Add the video to OBS
For one video file: try Media Source
- Open OBS and select the scene that should carry the video.
- In the Sources panel, select the add control and choose Media Source.
- Give the source a recognizable name. In its properties, select the file if it is staged locally, or enter the remote object URL only if the object is accessible to the client and the URL format works with the actual media source.
- Set looping if the video should repeat, then apply the properties and check the preview. Confirm that both video and audio play as intended.
For an ordered playlist: use VLC Video Source
OBS documents VLC Video Source for playlists; VLC must be installed for this source to appear in OBS. Add a VLC Video Source to the scene, add the intended media items, set the playlist order, and configure looping if needed. Test transitions and audio across the full playlist rather than assuming that a source which starts correctly will continue through every item.

OBS’s source documentation describes network caching, but it does not certify every remote storage URL, permission setup, or codec. Test the exact URL, file format, access method, and playback behavior you plan to use. If direct remote playback fails or behaves inconsistently, stage the file locally with an S3-capable download or sync method and use that local copy in OBS. OBS source options are documented at Media Sources and VLC Video Source.
Configure and test the YouTube stream
- In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the broadcast and obtain the stream key for it. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to that broadcast. Do not show it in a screen recording or on-air scene.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select the applicable YouTube service and connect your account or enter the stream key as the OBS interface requests. Do not publish the key.
- Review OBS audio and output settings for the video you are sending, then confirm the correct scene is selected and the media source plays with sound.
- Run a private or otherwise non-public test broadcast before the real event. Watch the YouTube-side preview and OBS status while the video plays for several minutes, including any playlist transitions you expect to use.
- Only begin the intended broadcast after confirming that playback reaches OBS and the composed stream reaches YouTube as expected. OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing for a few minutes before the first stream.
Choose remote playback or local staging
| Playback route | Useful when | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Play the object URL in OBS or VLC | You want to avoid keeping a second local copy and the playback client can read the URL. | Object access works without exposing credentials; the client accepts the URL and decodes the actual file; startup, buffering, and playlist behavior are reliable on your connection. |
| Download or sync the object, then play locally | The object is private, direct URL playback fails, or a local copy offers a practical fallback. | The transfer completes, the local file is current, and the OBS source points to the correct local path. Ensure the computer and local storage remain available during the broadcast. |
Neither route is guaranteed by Object Storage consistency alone. Decide based on access control, decoding compatibility, your network, playlist needs, and how you will recover if playback stops.

Troubleshooting
- The source cannot open the URL: verify the bucket’s actual endpoint and object path, then check that the object is readable using the chosen access method. Private objects will not become public merely because their URL is known.
- OBS asks for a local file or remote playback does not work: remote object URL compatibility is not guaranteed for every OBS source and file. Download or sync the asset locally and retry with Media Source.
- The source appears but playback stalls or stops: check the network and the exact media URL, then test the file from the beginning and across playlist changes. Try local staging to determine whether remote delivery is the problem.
- Video plays but there is no audio: inspect the source’s audio and OBS mixer levels, then verify the media file itself has an audio track by playing it locally.
- The VLC source is missing: install VLC, then restart or reopen OBS and check the Sources add menu again.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm the OBS stream service and key match the intended YouTube broadcast, and check that OBS is actually starting output. Keep the key private while correcting it.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having a video file in your bucket does not establish that you have permission to livestream it. Before broadcasting, confirm that you own or have the necessary rights to the video, music, and other material in it. Review YouTube’s applicable rules for copyright and monetization, including how it evaluates reused content; do not assume that looping or storing a video in your own bucket makes it permissible. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist to help organize those checks.
