Grok access documented by the official help pages runs through an X account. Use your X email address, username, password, or an eligible verified phone number—not a separately documented Grok-only email credential—to sign in, change account details, recover access, and control Grok-related privacy settings.
What a “Grok email address” actually means
The official Grok access instructions point to x.com or the X mobile app. After signing in to X, you select the Grok icon. The email-address instructions associated with that process are X account instructions: they explain how to update, confirm, protect, and recover the email attached to your X account.
That distinction matters because the available official guidance does not document a separate, universal Grok-only email sign-in flow. If you encounter a different sign-in screen associated with a non-X service, do not assume that the X account procedure applies to it. Check that service’s own current help documentation.

In the normal X-based flow, your email is an account-recovery and notification address. It is not displayed on your public X profile, although a separate discoverability setting can allow people who already know the address to find your account.

Sign in and open Grok through X
On the X website
- Open the X website and sign in with your account email and password. If you normally use a username or another recovery method, those may also work in the applicable login or reset flow.
- After authentication, locate and select the Grok icon in the X interface.
- Use Grok from the resulting web experience. Availability can vary by location, account state, platform, and changes to X’s interface.
In the X app
- Open the X app on iOS or Android and sign in to the relevant X account.
- Select the Grok icon.
- Confirm that the account shown is the one whose email, privacy choices, and conversation history you intend to use.
The cited Grok help guidance lists web, iOS, and Android access where X is available. If the icon is missing, first verify that you are signed in to the intended account and that the app is current. Interface labels and availability can change, so the live X interface is the final authority.
Prepare before changing the email
Changing an account email is easiest when you plan the confirmation step before saving anything. Make sure you can open the new mailbox, that the address is not already attached to another X account, and that you can still authenticate to the X account you are editing. A new address that you cannot access will leave the account with an unconfirmed contact point.
- Keep the current X session open while you make the change.
- Use an inbox you control and can protect with its own password and security settings.
- Check the spelling carefully; a typo can send confirmation mail to someone else or to an unreachable mailbox.
- Have access to the old inbox if possible, because X says it notifies the previous address after an update.
- Do not assume changing the address also changes Grok privacy settings, conversation history, or third-party permissions.
Change the email attached to your X account
Complete this procedure while signed in. It changes the email for the X account you use to reach Grok; it does not create a separate Grok credential.

- Select Account.
- Select Email.
- Enter the new email address and save the change.
- Open the confirmation message X sends to the new address and select Confirm now. If you are not already signed in when you follow the message, X may ask you to log in before completing confirmation.
An email address can be associated with only one X account at a time. X says it notifies the previous email address after an update and retains previously used addresses for safety and security. You can view an address history by downloading your X data.
After selecting the confirmation link, return to Settings and privacy → Account → Email and check the status. This final check distinguishes a completed change from a message that was opened but not successfully confirmed. If the address still shows as unconfirmed, use the in-account resend prompt and complete the newest message.
What happens if you do not confirm the new address
The new address remains unconfirmed until you use the confirmation message. X warns that an unconfirmed email can limit certain features, including archive requests and login verification. If the message does not arrive, check spam, junk, and bulk-mail folders. When you are signed in, use the available prompt to resend a confirmation email.
Confirmation links can expire. If an old link no longer works, request a fresh message rather than repeatedly using the expired link. Use the newest message after each resend and avoid mixing links from different attempts.

Changing or confirming an email does not publish it on your public profile. However, X provides a separate email-discoverability control. If enabled, people who already know your address may be able to find the associated account through that address.
Decide these settings independently:
- Account email: the address X uses for account communication, recovery messages, and confirmation.
- Confirmation status: whether X has verified that you control the address.
- Discoverability: whether people who know the address can use it to find your account.
Keeping the address private on your profile does not automatically disable discoverability. Review the discoverability option in X’s privacy settings if being found by email would be unwanted. Conversely, turning off discoverability does not remove the address from account records or stop X from using it for account notices.
If you cannot remember the email address
You may still be able to recover the account without knowing its email. X’s login guidance recommends trying the account username and password. The password-request form can also accept a username, a possible email address, or a mobile number. Check every inbox you may have used for the account for the reset message.

- Start the X password-reset or login-help flow.
- Try the account username, each plausible email address, and any mobile number attached to the account.
- Check the corresponding inboxes, including spam, junk, and bulk folders.
- Follow the reset message, then sign in and inspect Settings and privacy → Account → Email to identify the current address.
Do not assume that a message sent to one inbox proves that inbox is still the current address; it may be an older notification or a reset attempt for a different account. Once signed in, verify the address directly in the account settings. If several accounts use similar usernames or addresses, confirm the profile you reached before changing anything.
Choose a recovery route based on what you can still access

The practical difference between these routes is the proof of ownership still available to you. An authenticated session lets you change settings immediately; a username or possible email helps X locate the account; a verified phone may provide an SMS reset; and control of the original mailbox is often necessary when no other verified route remains.
If you lost the email inbox
X directs users to contact the email provider and regain access to the mailbox. After the inbox is restored, request a new X password and complete the login process. X support cannot substitute for control of an unavailable mailbox when no verified phone provides another route.
Mailbox recovery and X recovery are separate tasks. First follow the email provider’s process, then use the restored inbox for a fresh X password request. Repeatedly submitting X forms without access to a delivery channel does not establish ownership.
If SMS recovery is available
A verified mobile number may appear as an option during password reset. Use the code sent to that number, then set a new password and review the email in account settings. Treat SMS as an alternate recovery path, not proof that the email address has been changed or confirmed.
If you have lost every recovery method
When you have neither access to the account email nor a verified mobile number, X says it cannot continue troubleshooting or deactivate the account for you. The stated reason is protection against giving account information to the wrong person. Keep trying to restore the original mailbox or phone service through the relevant provider rather than sending repeated reset requests.
Handle reset messages, expired links, and lockouts
- No message received: check spam, junk, and bulk folders; confirm that you entered the intended address; then request one new message.
- Confirmation link expired: while signed in, use the prompt to resend a confirmation email and use the newest link.
- Several reset messages: use the most recent message and avoid opening older links after requesting another reset.
- “Locked out!” message: X’s login-help guidance says the lock normally clears on its own after “an hour or so.” Wait rather than submitting repeated reset requests during the lockout period.
The “an hour or so” wording is operational guidance from X Help, not a guaranteed, measured recovery time. If the account remains unavailable after the waiting period, retry the official login-help path with the correct username, email, or verified number. Keep a record of which identifier you used so you do not repeatedly trigger requests for the wrong account.
Manage Grok privacy controls separately from the login email
Changing your X email controls account identity and recovery. It does not by itself change how Grok data is handled. The cited Grok help guidance describes separate controls under Privacy & Safety.
Data sharing and personalization
Review the Grok-related options for data sharing and personalization in X’s privacy settings. These controls determine how information connected with your Grok use may be used for the functions described in the settings. Read the current explanations and choose the options that match your privacy needs; do not infer their state from whether your email is confirmed.
Because these controls are separate, changing an email is not a substitute for reviewing them. Check the settings again after moving between accounts, especially if the app has more than one X account signed in.

Delete conversation history
The same area includes a control to delete Grok conversation history. Use it when you want to remove stored conversations according to the deletion behavior X currently describes. Deleting history is a separate action from changing an email, resetting a password, or deleting the X account.
Before deleting, make sure the selected X account is the one whose conversations you intend to remove. A successful email change does not transfer conversations between accounts or merge account histories.
Secure the account you use for Grok
X recommends using a secure, private email address and a strong, unique password. A password manager can generate and store a different password for this account instead of reusing one from email, banking, or another service.

Review third-party app permissions
X cautions that third-party applications can access account information or take actions depending on the permissions you granted. In your account settings, inspect connected apps and remove access you no longer need. This is especially important after using an unfamiliar tool to sign in, because changing your email or password does not necessarily revoke every existing application permission.
Review permissions after an account recovery as well as after a suspected compromise. The relevant risk depends on what each app was allowed to do, so read the permission description instead of assuming every connection has the same access.
Understand the limits of Grok’s answers
The official Grok help article includes this warning: “This is an early version of Grok. It may confidently provide factually incorrect information, missummarize, or miss some context.” Treat generated responses as assistance rather than automatically verified facts, particularly for medical, legal, financial, security, or other high-consequence decisions.
Your X login email determines account access; it does not make Grok’s output authoritative. Verify important claims independently and avoid entering sensitive information into conversations unless you understand the applicable privacy controls.

- Open X on the web or in the iOS or Android app.
- Sign in to the intended X account.
- Select the Grok icon.

The documented path is clear for Grok inside X: authenticate to X, then select Grok. The documented email-management path is also clear: manage the X account email, confirm it, and use X’s recovery methods when access is lost.
What is not established by these X Help pages is whether a separate xAI or other non-X login flow, if encountered, uses the same email procedures. Keep those possibilities separate. For the X-based Grok experience, troubleshoot the X account and its recovery channels; for any distinct sign-in page, follow that service’s current official instructions instead.

Why has my new email not taken effect?
