A freehand selection tool lets you draw a boundary around part of an image so you can edit that area separately. Depending on the program, you may see it called Free Selection, Freehand Selection, or Lasso.
What the tool does
Instead of selecting a preset rectangle or relying entirely on automatic detection, you trace the outline with a pointer. The editor turns that outline into a selection, which limits where supported edits or image operations apply.
Names differ by application: GIMP calls its tool Free Select (also described as Free Selection), Krita calls it Freehand Selection, and Photoshop groups hand-drawn selection choices under Lasso. How you draw and refine a selection
Trace the outline
In GIMP 3.0, press F to activate Free Select. Click to set a starting point, then either keep the mouse button pressed while dragging a freehand outline, or release it and drag to create a polygonal boundary from straight segments. GIMP also allows freehand and polygonal segments to be mixed. Close and validate the boundary to create the selection; consult the GIMP 3.0 manual for its exact interaction details.

Other programs have their own closing behavior, shortcuts, and controls, so do not assume GIMP’s steps apply elsewhere. Krita’s Freehand Selection tool and Photoshop’s Lasso tools provide application-specific instructions.
Adjust the selection and its edge
Selection modes let you combine a new outline with an existing selection. Depending on the editor, you can add to, subtract from, or intersect selections; Krita also documents a replace action. GIMP applies modifier keys after validating a selection. Exact keys and steps vary by application and version.

Where supported, feathering softens the selection edge, while antialiasing helps smooth its appearance. These controls affect the boundary treatment, not the shape you traced. GIMP and Photoshop document these options, but availability and placement differ by tool and program.

Choose freehand tracing when an outline is irregular and you want to follow it directly. It gives you control over where the boundary goes, but careful tracing can be difficult—especially around fine details.

GIMP’s documentation describes Free Select as a useful way to “rough in” a selection, but cautions that it is not well suited to precise definition. For detail work in GIMP, its manual recommends switching to Quick Mask. A graphics tablet may make the hand-drawn interaction easier than a mouse, but it is optional; the tool works with a pointer.
Which selection method fits the edge?

These methods are alternatives, not interchangeable names for the same interaction. You can also combine freehand and polygonal segments in GIMP 3.0 when an outline has both curved and straight portions.

Selection for image analysis
A freehand selection is not limited to retouching. In ImageJ, the Freehand Selection Tool creates non-rectangular regions that can be used with editing, processing, and analysis commands, including measurement. The ImageJ documentation describes its use in that context.
