An API is better for visual regression tests, catalog thumbnails, reports, archival jobs, and scheduled captures. Your program sends a URL and options over HTTPS, authenticates if required, then saves returned bytes or follows a hosted result URL. Before building around any free plan, verify the current quota, maximum height, rate-limit policy, retention period, and terms for the content you plan to capture. A free hosted URL may expire; downloading the bytes immediately is safer for archives.
How to take a website screenshot in a browser
- Choose a service. For a quick public-page capture, use a browser tool such as Site-Shot. For repeatable jobs, use an API instead.
- Enter a public HTTPS URL. Test the exact canonical URL, including any path or query string. Private intranet addresses and login-protected pages generally will not render without a service that supports authentication.
- Pick the capture area. Select a normal viewport for what a visitor sees at one screen size, or full-page to stitch the complete document. If available, set width, height, zoom, device preset, or retina scale.
- Set timing and format. Use a delay when animations or client-side data load after navigation. Choose PNG for sharp text, JPEG for smaller photographic files, WebP for a compact modern image, or PDF when pagination matters.
- Run and inspect the result. Check that lazy-loaded images, fonts, cookie dialogs, and responsive breakpoints appear as intended. If the page is blank, try a longer delay or another viewport.
- Download and record provenance. Save the URL, capture time, viewport, and tool version with the image if it will support a report or comparison.
How to call a screenshot API safely
- Create credentials. Some services require an account and Bearer key; others use an access key or IP limits. Store the secret in an environment variable or a server-side secret manager.
- Send the URL and explicit options. Set format, viewport, full-page mode, and delay rather than relying on changing defaults. URL-encode query parameters.
- Handle the response by type. An image response is binary data and should be written with a binary-safe client. A JSON response may contain a hosted URL, job ID, or error object. Check HTTP status and content type before saving.
- Apply timeouts and retries carefully. Use a timeout long enough for a real page, retry transient 5xx or network failures with backoff, and do not blindly retry a 4xx authentication or validation error.
- Test representative pages. Include a short page, a long page with lazy images, a responsive layout, and a page containing cookie banners or blocked resources. Confirm that the target site’s terms permit automated capture.

Control page weight and wait time
Full-page captures take longer and use more memory than a viewport shot, especially when lazy images are forced to load. Use a selector capture for a card or chart, block ads and trackers when they are irrelevant, and wait for a specific selector or network idle instead of adding an unnecessarily long fixed delay.
Make retries idempotent
Assign your own job ID to each requested URL and store the verdict and output path. Retry only transport failures and temporary server errors. For asynchronous jobs, verify signed webhook deliveries and make the handler safe to run twice.

Understand what “free” covers
A free quota can still have dimensions, height, concurrency, IP, or retention limits. The image is blank or only partly rendered
The page may need more time, depend on JavaScript data, or reject the remote browser. Increase a delay, wait for a known selector, or use network-idle waiting. Test the URL in a normal browser and check whether it requires a login or blocks datacenter traffic.
Cookie banners, popups, or chat cover the content

Full-page output is cut off

Images or fonts are missing
The target may block cross-origin resources, require a particular user agent, or load assets after the initial response. Wait for a selector, supply appropriate headers or cookies when authorized, and test whether blocking rules accidentally exclude images or fonts.

A 401 usually means a missing or invalid key; a 403 can indicate a target site’s bot policy or an incorrect Authorization header. A 429 means you exceeded a quota or concurrency limit. Fix credentials and target permissions first, then reduce concurrency or wait for the provider’s reset window.

Do not save an error JSON as an image. Check the status code and Content-Type, and inspect the body when the request fails. Write binary responses with a binary-safe client and use the provider’s documented extension and format.

- Capture only pages and assets you are allowed to copy. A screenshot can contain personal data, paywalled text, or copyrighted artwork.
- Do not place API keys in public HTML, mobile apps, browser extensions, or client-side source where visitors can extract them.
- Review retention and deletion terms before sending private URLs, cookies, Authorization headers, or location data to a third party.
