You can use cron to launch FFmpeg on a Linux VPS at a scheduled time and send a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live event. Cron starts the encoder; it does not necessarily make the scheduled event public. In YouTube’s documented Studio workflow, you must wait for the encoder preview in Live Control Room and click Go live. Test the complete workflow before relying on unattended operation.
How the workflow works
A scheduled YouTube event and the encoder feed are separate parts of a broadcast. You create the event in YouTube Studio, then configure FFmpeg with that event’s ingest URL and stream key. Cron can start FFmpeg at a chosen time, but a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that viewers can watch the event.
YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream flow calls for starting the encoder, waiting for its preview in Live Control Room, then clicking Go live. If you need the public broadcast itself to start without that Studio action, cron by itself is not enough; API-based broadcast management is a separate implementation.

Before scheduling the VPS job
Enable live streaming on the channel
Check that the channel is eligible and live streaming is enabled. YouTube says first-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this until the event is imminent. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Create or schedule the YouTube event
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose its visibility and event settings. A scheduled event provides a watch page that you can share and lets viewers set reminders. Keep the event private or unlisted while testing; select the intended public visibility only when you are ready.
Get and protect the ingest details
Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: store it in a configuration file accessible only to the account that runs FFmpeg, or in another protected environment source. Do not put it in a public repository, the cron line, screenshots, shell history, or broadly accessible logs. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio.
Check the media and VPS
- Use an absolute path to the media file and confirm the file will remain available for the entire broadcast.
- Check available disk space, network egress and bandwidth limits, and CPU capacity if you plan to transcode.
- Decide whether to send the existing audio and video streams unchanged or transcode them. There is no universally suitable VPS size: resource needs depend on the source and on the work FFmpeg must perform.
- Install FFmpeg and verify the options against the version on your VPS. The examples below illustrate command structure; they are not a tested, universal script.
Choose playback and encoding settings
Play once or loop continuously
For a one-time event, send the file once and let the feed end when the file ends. To repeat it continuously, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping. Put input options before the corresponding -i input.

Use real-time input pacing
FFmpeg can read the file at its native frame rate with -re, equivalent to -readrate 1. Without real-time pacing, a file may be read as quickly as the system can process it rather than being sent as a live, real-time feed. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Match YouTube’s current ingest guidance
Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube describes it as the secure extension of RTMP. YouTube’s published encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 options depending on configuration, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds). Choose the bitrate for the actual output resolution and configuration from YouTube’s current table instead of borrowing a number for another resolution. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

If stream-copying, verify the file’s codecs, timestamps, frame rate, and stream layout are compatible with YouTube’s requirements and the selected output. Copying avoids encoding work but does not change incompatible streams. Transcoding lets you alter the output but uses additional CPU; select output codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval deliberately.
Build an FFmpeg command
This is a command shape to adapt, not a turnkey command for every FFmpeg build or YouTube endpoint:
/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /absolute/path/video.mp4 [encoding options] -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'Replace the input path, output options, and destination with the values appropriate to your file and the exact ingest URL and key supplied by Studio. Do not publish a real key. The FLV output form shown is a conceptual pattern; confirm that the URL and path format match what Studio provides. For intentional repetition, add -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i. Omit it for one-play playback.
Choose either compatible stream-copy options or a complete transcoding configuration for the output. The bracketed placeholder is not an FFmpeg option: supply actual options, or remove it when no extra output options are needed. For unattended operation, -nostdin disables console input checks; FFmpeg recommends this for background tasks. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Put the command in a script and schedule it with cron
Create a script with explicit paths
Put the FFmpeg command in a script owned by the account that will run it. Use the absolute FFmpeg binary and media paths, set a deliberate working directory if the script depends on relative files, and direct standard output and errors to a log with a retention or rotation plan. Keep credentials in the protected configuration source rather than exposing the key in the script’s public or broadly readable contents.

Make the script executable and run it manually as the intended service account before scheduling it. Confirm that FFmpeg connects, YouTube receives the feed, audio and video are present, and the event behaves as expected. A test with a private or unlisted event is safer than first discovering a problem during a public broadcast.
Add a cron entry for the planned start
Edit the crontab for the account that should run the stream and add a schedule that invokes the script by absolute path. For example, the structure is:
MINUTE HOUR DAY_OF_MONTH MONTH DAY_OF_WEEK /absolute/path/start-stream.shReplace the time fields and script path with your intended schedule. Cron syntax and environment details can differ across operating systems and cron implementations, so validate the expression and available environment on your VPS rather than treating this example as universally portable. Cron commonly has a smaller environment than an interactive shell: set needed paths and variables deliberately in the script, and do not assume your login shell configuration will be loaded.
Check the system’s cron logs or the script’s own logs after a test run. Prevent overlapping runs if a previous broadcast could still be active when the next scheduled invocation occurs. A service timer or supervisor may be more appropriate when you need ongoing process supervision, but it must be configured so that it does not restart a stream after its planned end or turn a one-time event into an unintended continuous broadcast.
Confirm the event is actually live
- Start the scheduled encoder job, or run the script manually for a test.
- Open the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and wait for the incoming encoder preview.
- Check the preview for video, audio, framing, and the correct event.
- For YouTube’s documented scheduled-stream flow, click Go live in Live Control Room. Do not infer that the public event is live merely because the VPS process is running.
- After the broadcast, stop the encoder when appropriate and check Studio for the completed stream and replay.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish automatic VOD retention for a broadcast lasting 12 hours or longer.

Troubleshoot common failures
Cron runs, but FFmpeg cannot find a file or command
Likely cause: The job relies on a relative path, a shell startup setting, or a PATH value that exists only in an interactive session. Fix: Use absolute paths for FFmpeg, the media file, configuration, and logs; set the working directory explicitly; and test under the same account cron uses.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Likely cause: The job did not run, FFmpeg exited, or the ingest URL, stream key, network connection, or output configuration is wrong. Fix: Check cron and FFmpeg logs, verify the event-specific ingest details in Studio, and confirm that the selected RTMPS destination and output settings are valid. Keep the key out of shared logs while diagnosing.
The preview appears, but viewers cannot watch
Likely cause: The scheduled event has not been taken live in Studio. Fix: Check the event state in Live Control Room and follow the documented preview-then-Go live step. A connected encoder is not the same thing as a public broadcast.
The stream ends when the file finishes
Likely cause: The command is configured for one playback. Fix: If continuous repeat is intended, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option and test the transition between loops. Otherwise, allow the one-shot event to finish.

Likely cause: The input is not being paced in real time, or the copied/transcoded streams do not meet YouTube’s current ingest guidance. Fix: Use -re for real-time file pacing and check codecs, bitrate mode, resolution, frame rate, audio, and keyframe interval against YouTube’s current encoder settings.

The VPS stops sending unexpectedly
Likely cause: The process exited, the VPS ran out of resources or network capacity, or the source file became unavailable. Fix: Inspect retained logs and resource limits, verify disk space and egress constraints, and test whether the source remains readable for the full run. Add supervision only with a defined stop condition so recovery does not unintentionally extend the event.
When to use API management instead of cron alone
YouTube’s Live Streaming API exposes broadcast and stream resources for programmatic workflows. That is a separate implementation from scheduling FFmpeg with cron: it requires appropriate API authentication and logic to manage broadcast state. See Google’s Live Streaming API overview. For many operators, Studio scheduling plus a cron-launched encoder is simpler, provided someone can complete the required Studio action.
