To make a black-screen rain stream, send a static black image and rain audio to YouTube Live using an encoder, then test the feed in Live Control Room and monitor it while it runs. YouTube’s public guidance explains how to set up and monitor a live stream, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation or prescribe a configuration that will run continuously for every channel and setup.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also says creators must be at least 16 years old. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and getting started with live streaming explain eligibility.
- An encoder workflow that can send video and audio to YouTube. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but does not prescribe a particular encoder or a 24-hour configuration.
- A black image or scene and a continuous rain audio track. These are creative choices, not YouTube technical requirements.
- Permission to livestream the audio and any other content in your feed.
- A computer and internet connection capable of maintaining the encoder feed. YouTube’s cited guidance does not set a minimum computer specification, connection speed, or power-backup requirement for this setup.
Set up the black screen and rain audio
1. Prepare a simple, stable scene
In your encoder, create a scene with a black image as its video source and the rain recording as its audio source. Make the audio long enough or arranged in a loop that it does not unexpectedly end during the intended broadcast. Check the sound for gaps, abrupt restarts, clipping, and unintended silence. These are practical production checks, not official YouTube requirements.
You do not need to add visual movement for the stream to be a black-screen sleep stream. If you choose to add a title, logo, or other visual element, it will no longer be an entirely black picture.

- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a live stream, following the current prompts shown for your channel.
- In the stream settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. Enter those in your encoder’s YouTube streaming settings. The URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the stream key identifies the stream. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings guidance describes these settings.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not show it in a recording, screenshot, public post, or stream overlay.
- Start the encoder and wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room. Review the preview before starting the broadcast for viewers.
3. Test before announcing a sleep stream
YouTube recommends trying a test livestream, checking the Live Control Room preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality. Use a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel, and check the watch page from another device as well. Listen long enough to catch a loop that stops, a silent section, or a sound restart that would be distracting during sleep.

Test the actual arrangement you plan to use. A short successful test confirms that the encoder can reach YouTube at that moment; it does not prove the feed will remain connected all night or indefinitely.
Choose settings for an ambient stream
Latency
YouTube’s live settings guidance notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering and that low latency matters less when the creator is not interacting with viewers. A sleep stream is usually noninteractive, so prioritize stable playback and an acceptable listening experience over minimizing delay. Use the available latency options in Live Control Room and validate the result with a test; the best choice depends on your connection and viewing conditions.

Video and audio quality
The cited YouTube guidance does not specify a special bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or audio format for a black-screen rain stream. Avoid assuming that one set of encoder values is required for every account or setup. Use compatible settings offered by your encoder and YouTube’s current stream guidance, then check Live Control Room’s status and the actual playback during your test.
Keep the stream running and respond to problems
YouTube advises creators to monitor audio and video quality continuously. For a long ambient broadcast, also check that the encoder remains connected, the rain audio continues as intended, and the watch page still plays. These are operational recommendations, not a guarantee from YouTube that a stream will stay live 24/7.

Use rain audio you have the right to stream
You are responsible for having the rights needed for the live content. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions say that creators represent and warrant they have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services worldwide. YouTube also scans live streams for third-party content; a match can lead to a warning, placeholder, interruption, or termination. See Copyright issues with live streams.
The clearest route is to use a rain recording you made yourself. If you use a recording from someone else, verify that its license covers livestreaming, your intended territories and duration, monetization if relevant, and any attribution conditions. Keep documentation of the permission. A receipt or attribution in the description does not necessarily prevent a Content ID interruption; some licensed material may require the rights holder to allowlist your channel.

YouTube’s tips to find safe music explain that public-domain music or music used with the copyright owner’s permission can be safe, and warn that a “free” label alone does not prevent Content ID claims. That guidance addresses music; the broader requirement to have rights applies to the rain recording and other live content as well.

Do not assume that a black-screen rain stream will qualify for monetization or earn a particular amount. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to live streams. On July 15, 2025, YouTube updated this policy and renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use a recording does not by itself establish monetization eligibility.

YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features, subject to channel access and settings. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve; see Monetize your live stream. Original rain recordings, a deliberately crafted soundscape, or meaningful variation may help you explain the authorship of the stream, but none guarantees a monetization decision.
