To upload a photo with Python Selenium, locate the page’s HTML <input type="file"> element and pass it an absolute file path with send_keys(). Selenium sets the selected file without opening the operating system’s file-picker window. Submit the form using the page’s own button or JavaScript flow, then verify a visible result such as the uploaded filename.
What Selenium is actually uploading
A browser upload control normally contains an HTML file input. Selenium’s supported workflow is:
- Find the real
input[type="file"]element. - Convert the photo path to an absolute path that the browser-driving process can read.
- Call
send_keys(absolute_path)on that element. - Use the page’s submit button or form action.
- Assert an outcome shown by the page.
This avoids automating the native file chooser. Selenium cannot interact with that operating-system dialog directly; sending the path to the file input is the documented alternative.
Install and prepare a local test
Install Selenium in the Python environment that will run your test:

python -m pip install seleniumUse a browser driver setup appropriate for your environment. Recent Selenium versions can manage compatible drivers automatically in many local configurations, but the browser itself must still be installed. Create a project such as:

example.jpgThe file must exist on the machine (or execution environment) running the WebDriver process. A path that exists only on your development laptop will not work when the test runs in a container, CI worker or another machine.
Complete Python example
The following is an adaptation of Selenium’s official file-upload pattern. The URL and IDs are illustrative; replace every locator with the ones from your page.

Why use an absolute path?
os.path.abspath() resolves a path relative to the process’s current working directory. That makes tests less dependent on where the command was launched and is the approach recommended in Selenium’s Python API guidance for cross-operating-system tests. On Cygwin or mixed Windows/Unix environments, use the path format expected by the process that owns the browser.
Keep the browser open while debugging
During diagnosis, temporarily remove or comment out driver.quit(), or add a pause after the assertion. Restore cleanup in normal tests so failed runs do not leave browser processes behind.

Locating the correct file input
Start with the simplest selector:

file_input = driver.find_element(By.NAME, "photo")A visible “Choose file” label may be connected to a hidden input. Send the path to the input itself, not to the label, a text field or a custom drop zone. If the input is inserted after a button click, wait for it to exist before calling send_keys.
Hidden inputs and custom widgets
Many modern components visually hide the file input while retaining it in the DOM. Selenium can often set such an input directly. If the element is not present until a widget is opened, perform that page action first and then locate the input. Do not assume that clicking a styled drop zone is equivalent to selecting a file; the page still needs an actual file input or a site-specific upload mechanism.
Submitting and verifying the upload
Selecting a path only changes the file input. It does not prove that the server received the photo. Trigger the page’s real submission mechanism:
- Click the form’s submit button when one exists.
- If the page submits automatically after selection, wait for its success state instead of clicking an unrelated button.
- For a custom JavaScript form, use the control exposed by that page; Selenium’s file-selection step remains the same.
Verify something observable: a returned filename, success message, thumbnail, updated profile image, changed URL or API response rendered by the page. A filename check is useful because it confirms that the page accepted the selected file, but it does not by itself validate server-side processing or image contents.
Waiting for asynchronous processing
Uploads may finish after the click returns. Prefer an explicit wait for a success element or changed state:

assert "uploaded" in success.text.lower()A fixed sleep can make a test slower and still flaky. Use a timeout appropriate to the page and environment, and capture the page state when the wait expires.
Common failures and precise fixes
ElementNotInteractableException or no file selected
- Confirm that the element is an
inputwhosetypeisfile. - Wait until the widget has rendered the input.
- Ensure you are not targeting a label, wrapper or ordinary text input.
- Check whether a frame contains the input; switch to that frame before locating it.
FileNotFoundError or an immediate Selenium path error
Print the resolved path and test it with os.path.isfile(). Resolve relative paths from a known project directory, account for case-sensitive filenames, and ensure the CI user has read permission.
The button click does nothing
The button may be disabled until client-side validation completes, covered by another element, or unrelated to the file form. Wait for it to be clickable, inspect its form association, and look for validation messages. If selecting the file triggers automatic submission, wait for the resulting state rather than forcing a second click.
The test reports success but the server rejects the photo
Site rules may reject an extension, MIME type, dimensions, file size or image content. Selenium’s file-input operation does not bypass those rules. Use an allowed test fixture and assert the page’s actual error or success message.

It works locally but fails in CI
Verify that the photo is checked into the test workspace or copied into the job, that the path is readable by the CI process, and that the browser and driver can start in the CI environment. Log the absolute path (without exposing sensitive directory data where that matters) and the page URL at failure.
Remote WebDriver caveat
With a remote browser, the path must be made available to the remote end according to the Selenium setup you use. The local example does not establish a universal remote-file-transfer configuration, so validate that behavior in your chosen grid or cloud provider before relying on it.

Multiple photos and file restrictions
If the input includes the multiple attribute, Selenium can receive multiple paths separated by a newline:

file_input.send_keys("n".join(paths))Whether multiple files are accepted, previewed or submitted depends on the page. For a single-photo input, send one path and let the page enforce its own rules. Do not rename a file merely to evade validation; test with fixtures that represent permitted uploads.
Making the test reliable
- Use explicit waits for the input, submit control and result.
- Build paths with
os.pathrather than hard-coded separators. - Keep upload fixtures small, deterministic and available in every test environment.
- Close the driver in a
finallyblock. - Record a screenshot, HTML source or browser log when a verification wait fails.
- Do not assume a selected filename means a completed server upload.
Authentication, anti-bot checks, CSRF handling, quotas and server-side image processing are application-specific. Selenium’s documented file-input method addresses file selection; it does not grant permission to upload or remove those application requirements.

Can Selenium upload without opening the file picker?
Yes. Send the full path to the page’s HTML file input with send_keys(); the documented workflow does not automate the native picker.
Should I send a relative or absolute path?
Use an absolute path whenever practical, resolving it with Python’s os.path utilities so the browser process can find the file consistently.
How do I know the upload really succeeded?
Submit the form and wait for a page-specific result, such as the returned filename or success message. Setting the input alone is not proof of server acceptance.
