You can upload a large video to YouTube as a regular on-demand video, but that upload will not keep a YouTube Live stream running. YouTube limits a single upload to 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. For continuous live playback, create a YouTube Live stream in Studio and send it from an encoder configured with the stream URL and key. Can you upload a 24-hour video to YouTube?
No. YouTube’s upload limit is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less. Uploads longer than 15 minutes require a verified account. YouTube also advises using an up-to-date browser for files larger than 20 GB. These limits are the same in the India-localized guidance reviewed; no separate India-specific cap or 24/7 upload procedure is established.
If the file exceeds the limit, YouTube suggests compressing it and specifically recommends H.264 to reduce file size while maintaining quality. Compression can affect picture quality, so check the result before uploading. If you want a file available for viewers to watch on demand, upload it through YouTube’s normal upload flow; if you want it broadcast as a continuous live stream, use an encoder workflow instead.

A continuous broadcast is sent to YouTube Live from an encoder; the uploaded video file itself does not become a live stream. YouTube supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. The steps below cover the YouTube setup and the decisions needed for a local encoder. The exact way to repeat a video depends on the playback or encoder software you choose; YouTube’s setup guidance does not require one particular playlist-repeat application.

- Enable live streaming early. First-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days.
- Create or schedule a stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule the broadcast. Use the stream settings shown there for that stream.
- Connect an encoder. Copy the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Set up video playback and recording. Configure your source to play the intended recording or playlist continuously, and enable local recording if your encoder supports it. YouTube does not prescribe one universal repeat-playback application, so verify the selected software’s loop and restart behavior before relying on it.
- Preview, test, and go live. Start sending the encoder output, inspect the YouTube preview, and check stream health before going live. Test with audio and motion similar to the actual programme, then monitor the broadcast after it starts.
What bitrate and connection do you need?
Choose a bitrate the measured outbound connection can sustain, rather than selecting a setting based only on the video file’s quality. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom. If you send both primary and backup streams, include the bandwidth for both when calculating capacity. Run a test stream and monitor stream health; YouTube’s recommendations are platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will remain stable.

These figures are YouTube encoder-setting guidance. They do not replace checking your real upload capacity, leaving headroom, and testing the actual source. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the resolution and codec you plan to send.

How do I protect a long recording and broadcast?
YouTube automatically archives live streams under 12 hours, but says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast is longer than that archive window, so treat the YouTube archive as a convenience, not as the master copy. Record locally and verify that the recording file is growing during the stream. Confirm the live stream appears on its watch page, check audio and video, and monitor stream health while it runs.

What happens if a YouTube upload gets interrupted?
YouTube says an interrupted upload can be resumed for up to 24 hours: return to the upload flow and select the same file. Upload duration depends on file size, bandwidth, traffic, and video quality. If the upload does not resume, confirm you are using the same file and return within that 24-hour window. For upload errors, use YouTube’s upload error troubleshooting.

Should you use a software encoder or a hardware encoder?
YouTube supports both software encoders and standalone hardware encoders. Software avoids buying a separate encoding appliance; dedicated hardware is an option for setups that want a separate device. The sources do not establish model-by-model reliability or price comparisons. Whichever route you choose, check its support for your target resolution and codec, continuous playback, recovery after power or network interruptions, monitoring, and local recording.
