Use the editor’s own font-upload workflow, not a system-font installer. Canva requires you to add an OTF, TTF, or WOFF file to a Brand Kit, while Adobe Express lets eligible users upload OTF or TTF files from the text font picker or a Brand/Library. In both products, your account plan, team permissions, file format, and font license determine whether the upload succeeds and who can use it.
Before you upload a font
Locate the actual font file
You need the font file itself on your device. A font that is merely installed in Windows or macOS is not automatically available inside a web-based template editor. Download the licensed file, extract the ZIP archive if necessary, and identify whether it is OTF, TTF, or WOFF.
Check the license first
Read the font license before uploading. Canva and Adobe both place responsibility for rights on you. The license should permit the type of use you intend, including embedding or uploading the file to a hosted service and sharing it with collaborators. If the license is unclear, ask the font seller or author rather than assuming that a free download permits every use. Adobe states that a font uploaded without proper rights may be removed or replaced, which can change a design’s appearance.
Confirm your plan and workspace
Custom-font controls are plan-gated. Canva documents uploads for Pro, Teams, Business, Education, and Nonprofits accounts. Adobe Express lists Premium, Teams, and Enterprise plans. An Enterprise administrator can disable Adobe’s upload control, so a paid account does not always mean that the button will be visible.

Upload a custom font to Canva
Canva’s file and quantity requirements
Canva lists OpenType Font (OTF), TrueType Font (TTF), and Web Open Font Format (WOFF) as supported custom-font formats. A Brand Kit can contain no more than 500 uploaded fonts. If your file uses another format, convert or obtain an OTF, TTF, or WOFF version from the font provider; do not rename an unrelated file extension and expect it to work.
Add the font to a Brand Kit
- Sign in to a Canva account on a plan that supports font uploads.
- From the Canva home screen, open Brand in the side panel.
- Select an existing Brand Kit, or create a new kit.
- In the Brand Kit setup, choose the option to add or upload fonts, then select the font file from your device.
- Wait for Canva to finish processing the file. Keep the original licensed file so you can upload it again if the kit or account changes.
The Brand Kit is the storage location for the uploaded font. Uploading it to one kit does not make it available in every Canva workspace you can access.
Apply the font in an image template
- Open the image template in the Canva editor.
- Select an existing text object, or add a new text object.
- Open the font control in the text toolbar.
- Find and select the uploaded font from the font list, then check each text layer that should use it.
Changing the Brand Kit does not necessarily restyle text that was already set to another font. Select the text layer and explicitly choose the uploaded family. Check headings, body text, buttons, and any text inside grouped elements.

Give teammates access
Canva says team members can use Brand Kit assets from inside the editor, but access depends on the team type, the kit’s sharing settings, and workspace roles. If a colleague cannot find the font, verify that the person is in the intended team, that the Brand Kit is shared with them, and that their role permits use of the kit. A successful upload in your personal or separate team kit will not solve a permissions problem in another workspace.

Adobe Express file and size requirements
Adobe Express documents OTF and TTF files under 512 MB. Its custom-font upload feature is listed for Premium, Teams, and Enterprise plans. Adobe’s guidance identifies the 512 MB figure as a maximum file size; a smaller file can still fail if it is malformed, unsupported, duplicated in the library, or blocked by an administrator.
Upload while editing a design
- Open your design in Adobe Express.
- Select a text object.
- In the Text panel, open the font dropdown.
- Choose Upload, then choose Add fonts.
- Select the OTF or TTF file on your device and wait for processing to finish.
- Select the text object again and choose the family under Uploaded fonts.
This route puts the font where you can immediately use it in the current design. If the file does not appear after processing, reopen the font menu and confirm that you are looking under Uploaded fonts, not the general font list.

Add a font to a Brand or Library
- Open Brands or a Library in Adobe Express.
- Select the Brand that should own the font.
- Choose the add icon, then Upload.
- Choose Add fonts and select one font file.
- Return to a design and choose the file from the uploaded-font section of the font menu.
Adobe’s Brand workflow requires fonts to be added individually. Bulk font uploads are not supported in that workflow, and a duplicate cannot be uploaded if the same font is already in the library.
Enterprise administration
On Enterprise accounts, an administrator can disable user uploads or manage fonts centrally through Adobe’s administration tools. If you have the right subscription but no Upload control, ask the administrator whether uploads are disabled or whether the font must be published to the organization instead.

Choose the workflow that matches the editor where the template lives. A font uploaded to Canva is not automatically available in Adobe Express, and the reverse is also true.

Troubleshoot a missing or replaced font
The Upload button is missing
- Canva: confirm that the account is Pro, Teams, Business, Education, or Nonprofits, and that you are in the correct workspace.
- Adobe Express: confirm Premium, Teams, or Enterprise access. On Enterprise, ask an administrator whether uploads were disabled or centrally managed.
- Sign out and back in only after checking the plan and workspace; reloading cannot grant a feature your account does not include.
The file is rejected
- Check the extension against the platform’s documented formats. Canva accepts OTF, TTF, and WOFF; Adobe Express accepts OTF and TTF.
- For Adobe Express, confirm the file is under 512 MB.
- Extract the font from its archive before selecting it. If the provider supplied multiple weights, upload each file that your editor requires.
- Obtain a clean copy from the font author if the file is corrupted or contains an unusual internal name.
The font uploaded but text still uses a substitute
- Open the font menu and verify that the upload completed.
- Select the specific text object in the template.
- Choose the family from the uploaded-font or Brand Kit section instead of relying on the previous style.
- Check every weight and style. A template may request Bold or Italic even though only the Regular file was uploaded.
- Ask a teammate to verify access to the relevant Brand Kit or Brand.
These checks follow the documented upload and access workflows; the exact warning shown by an editor can vary by account and file.
A collaborator sees a different font
First verify sharing and organization permissions, then confirm that the collaborator is editing in the same team or Brand context. Canva makes Brand Kit access dependent on team and role settings. Adobe recommends administrative font management for Enterprise collaboration. If the collaborator’s account cannot access the uploaded asset, the editor may display a substitute.
The font disappears or is replaced later
Re-check the license and the account that owns the upload. Adobe warns that an upload without proper rights may be removed or replaced. If that happens, obtain an appropriately licensed file and reapply it to the text layers after uploading.

Moving designs between accounts or teams
Do not assume that a shared design carries its custom font with it. Canva states that fonts themselves cannot be copied along with designs or files between accounts or teams. The receiving account or team may need its own authorized upload to the appropriate Brand Kit. Plan this before transferring a template to a client, a new department, or a separate organization.
Check the finished template before publishing
- Open the design at its intended output size and inspect line breaks, character spacing, and punctuation.
- Check every text style, including small labels and text inside groups.
- Review accented characters and symbols that may not exist in the chosen font.
- Have a collaborator open the file if the design will be edited by a team; this reveals permission problems before handoff.
- Keep a record of the font name, file version, license, and the Brand Kit or Brand where it was uploaded.

Can I upload a WOFF file to Adobe Express?
Adobe Express’s listed custom-font formats are OTF and TTF. Use one of those formats or obtain an officially supported file from the font provider.
Does uploading a font make its license valid for my whole team?
No. Uploading does not change the license. Ensure the license permits the intended hosted use and sharing, and limit access to people covered by that license.
