To upload an image, choose a file in a website’s upload form or content manager, then send it to a server or media service that validates and stores it. A file picker in HTML only selects a file; it does not publish or permanently store the image. If you use WordPress, upload through Media → Add New or the Media Library. If you are building a website, create a multipart form and a secure server-side upload endpoint.
Choose the right upload method
The best route depends on who manages your website and how much control you need. In every case, something beyond the browser must accept and store the image and make it available at a URL or through your site.

Maximum file size, accepted formats, access, URL behavior, and backup responsibility are configuration- or provider-specific; check the documentation for your actual CMS, endpoint, or service instead of assuming universal limits.
Upload an image in WordPress
- Open the media uploader. In the WordPress administration area, use Media → Add New, or open the Media Library and choose the upload option.
- Select the image. Choose a file from your device and wait for the upload to finish. WordPress documents uploading media from either the Media Add New screen or the Media Library: Media Add New Screen.
- Insert it where needed. In the post or page editor, add the image from the Media Library, then save or publish the content.
- Check the result. View the page and verify the image displays. If it does not, check the media URL and whether the site created any required thumbnail or image transformation.
If WordPress reports a permissions error, ask the site administrator to inspect the installation’s wp-content permissions. Do not change permissions broadly without understanding the site’s hosting and security setup.

Build a basic HTML upload form
This form provides a file picker and sends the chosen image in a POST request. It assumes your site has an endpoint at /upload that accepts a multipart form field named image; the HTML alone does not implement that endpoint.

MDN explains that selected files can be uploaded through form submission or handled with JavaScript and the File API: HTML input type=file. The browser sends the file to the server, but your application must decide whether to accept it and where to store it.

What the upload endpoint must do
A working upload is a complete server-side workflow, not just a form. Configure your application or storage service to handle these responsibilities before exposing the endpoint.
- Authenticate and authorize. Require a signed-in user or another appropriate authorization check when uploads should not be public to everyone. Apply any protections required by your application against forged requests.
- Enforce request and image limits. Set a maximum request size and image-size or dimension limits appropriate to your use case. Reject over-limit uploads safely; do not rely only on the browser to keep files small.
- Validate the actual content. Treat the filename extension and client-supplied content type as untrusted. Check the detected media type and file signature, decode the image, and enforce allowed formats and dimensions. OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet discusses validation and risks from dangerous or oversized uploads.
- Choose a safe storage name and location. Generate a new server-side filename rather than trusting a user-provided path or name. Store files where they cannot be executed as application code; follow your hosting platform’s recommended layout and permissions.
- Set access and delivery rules. Decide whether the image is public or private, and return a URL or identifier that respects that choice. For public images, verify that the destination can be read by visitors.
- Plan backups and lifecycle. Establish how uploads are backed up, retained, replaced, and deleted. If you use managed storage, verify which of these tasks the provider handles and which remain yours.
OWASP warns against trusting client-supplied extensions or headers. The HTML accept attribute only guides file selection; MDN states it does not validate the selected file types: accept attribute.

Add previews or drag-and-drop with JavaScript
JavaScript can make the form easier to use without changing the server’s role. The file input exposes selected files through HTMLInputElement.files, a FileList. You can use the File API to show a local preview, display a file’s size, or inspect image dimensions before submission. A drag-and-drop interface can feed a dropped file into the same upload flow.
A preview is not an upload: it may display a local file before the server has received anything. After the user submits, send the file to your endpoint using a submitted multipart form or a JavaScript request such as fetch with FormData. The endpoint must still authenticate as needed, validate the content, enforce limits, store it, and return a usable result. See MDN’s File API reference for browser-side file handling.

Troubleshoot image uploads
- The picker opens, but the server receives no file: Confirm the form uses
method="post"andenctype="multipart/form-data". Make sure the file input has anameattribute and that the server reads that same field name. - The server rejects the upload: Check the configured request-size limit, accepted formats, and image-dimension limits. Verify the file’s actual content rather than changing the browser’s
accepthint to bypass validation. - WordPress reports a permissions error: Ask the site administrator to check the installation’s
wp-contentpermissions and hosting configuration. - The upload succeeds but the image will not display: Verify the returned URL, public/read permissions, and any required thumbnail or transformation step. A successful storage operation does not guarantee that the URL is accessible to the viewer.
- A JavaScript preview works but nothing appears on the site: The preview is local to the browser. Confirm your code actually sends the file to the endpoint and handles its response.

Can I upload an image using HTML alone?
No. HTML can present the file picker and submit the selected file, but a server, CMS, or storage API must receive and store it.

Does accept="image/*" stop users from uploading other file types?
No. It is a picker hint, not validation. Enforce allowed file types on the server.
Why does an uploaded image need a URL?
A URL or equivalent identifier lets the page or application retrieve the stored image. The endpoint or media system must provide one that matches the intended access policy.
