To let a visitor upload an image, put a named <input type="file"> inside a form that submits with method="post" and enctype="multipart/form-data". HTML collects the file and sends the request; a server-side upload endpoint must receive, validate, store, and process it. For a page that should not reload, JavaScript can place the selected File in FormData and send the same multipart request with fetch().
What HTML can and cannot do
The browser can open a file picker, show the visitor’s selection, and submit the bytes. It cannot safely save the file to your server by itself. Your action URL must point to code on your server (or a storage service) that understands multipart form data, applies limits, validates the content, and decides where the file goes.
The name attribute is the field name the server receives. The accept attribute guides the picker but is not a security control: a user or a program can still submit another file type, so validation must happen on the server.
Basic upload form
This is the smallest complete browser form. Replace /upload with your real upload handler; a placeholder path does not work until you implement that endpoint.

type="file"opens the user’s file picker and exposes the chosen file to a form or browser file APIs.name="image"identifies the multipart field. Your server must look for this exact name (or you must change both sides).method="post"sends the file in the request body rather than putting it in the URL.enctype="multipart/form-data"encodes the file and its metadata as separate multipart parts. Without it, a normal form does not send the binary file correctly.accept="image/*"suggests image choices in the picker. Allowing more than one image
Add multiple when the user may select several files. Keep the same name if your framework represents repeated parts as a list, or use a convention such as name="images[]" when your server framework expects bracketed names.

Make the form accessible and clear
- Associate a visible
<label>with the input’sid; clicking the label then opens the picker. - Explain accepted formats and any size limit in text next to the control. This is guidance, not validation.
- Keep the submit button labeled with the action, such as “Upload image,” and report success or failure after the server responds.
- Do not put a user’s local path in your page or logs. Browsers intentionally expose only limited path information.
The receiving endpoint: required server responsibilities
When the form posts, the endpoint must parse multipart data and find the part named image. It should then:
- Reject requests that exceed the application’s request and file-size limits.
- Check that a file was supplied and that parsing completed without an error.
- Inspect the actual bytes (and, where appropriate, decode the image) rather than trusting the filename or the
acceptvalue. - Allow only formats your application can safely handle, such as PNG or JPEG, and reject malformed files.
- Generate a server-side filename instead of using an untrusted original name directly. Store uploads outside executable code paths, or use object storage with a private-by-default policy.
- Apply authentication, authorization, CSRF protection, malware scanning, and rate limits when the application requires them.
- Return a clear HTTP status and response body. On success, provide the resource identifier or URL your UI should display; on failure, explain what the user can correct without revealing internal paths.
Multipart requests contain boundaries separating fields and file metadata. Use a mature multipart parser supplied by your server framework instead of trying to split the raw body yourself.

Asynchronous upload with JavaScript
Use JavaScript when the page should remain in place, when you need dynamic validation or progress UI, or when the response should update a gallery without navigation. The backend can be the same /upload endpoint used by the normal form.

</script>Do not set Content-Type yourself when sending FormData. The browser adds multipart/form-data together with the required boundary; manually replacing the header commonly causes the server’s multipart parser to fail.
Client-side checks before sending
You may check file.type, file.size, and image dimensions to give immediate feedback. Treat those checks as usability improvements only. Repeat every important check on the server, because clients can be bypassed.
Progress reporting
fetch() does not provide a broadly available upload-progress event. If a progress bar is essential, use XMLHttpRequest and its upload.onprogress callback, while still sending a FormData object. The same multipart boundary rule applies.

Form submission or JavaScript: which should you choose?

Choose the plain form when reliability and simplicity matter more than an app-like interaction. Choose JavaScript when the interface needs continuous context, previews, retries, or dynamic feedback. JavaScript does not eliminate the server requirement.
Common problems and fixes
The server says no file was uploaded
Check that the input has the expected name, that the form uses method="post", and that enctype="multipart/form-data" is present. For JavaScript, confirm that you appended the file under the same field name.
The endpoint receives an empty or corrupt body
With fetch(), pass the FormData object as body and remove any manually assigned multipart Content-Type. The browser must generate the boundary.
Every file is rejected
Inspect the server’s permitted MIME types, parser configuration, and request-size limit. Compare those settings with the actual file bytes; do not “fix” the issue by trusting a filename extension.

Large files fail or time out
Increase limits only deliberately and consistently at every layer: browser-facing server, reverse proxy, application framework, and storage service. Set a timeout appropriate to your connection and provide a retry path. Compressing an image in the browser can reduce transfer size, but the server must still validate the resulting file.
The form works locally but not in production
Verify that the production action URL is correct, HTTPS and authentication cookies are available, the reverse proxy forwards multipart bodies, and the deployed process has permission to write to the selected storage location. Cross-origin JavaScript requests additionally require an appropriate CORS policy.
The picker shows unwanted formats
Narrow accept to the formats you intend to support, for example image/png,image/jpeg. Remember that this changes the picker hint, not the server’s security boundary.
Testing checklist
- Submit a valid small PNG and JPEG.
- Try a file with a misleading extension and verify byte-level validation rejects it.
- Submit no file and confirm the form gives a useful message.
- Test a file over the configured size limit.
- Test malformed image data and a request interrupted during upload.
- Verify unauthorized users cannot access or overwrite another user’s uploads.
- Confirm stored filenames cannot execute as code and that download responses use safe content-disposition and content-type policies.
- For JavaScript, test non-2xx responses, network loss, a server timeout, and a successful JSON response.

Can I upload an image directly from HTML to a database?
Not with HTML alone. A server endpoint must receive the multipart request, validate the bytes, and then write the data to a database or object-storage system.
Does changing the file extension make an upload safe?
No. Extensions and picker hints are untrusted. Inspect and, where possible, decode the content on the server before storing or serving it.

Use a multipart POST form for the simplest image upload, or send the same form data with JavaScript when you need a no-reload interface. In both cases, the receiving server—not HTML—enforces limits, validates content, and stores the image safely.
