For a general-purpose file link, Google Drive is the simplest option: set General access to Anyone with the link, choose Viewer, and select Copy link. Keep Restricted access for private images.
Choose the right kind of image link
A “shareable link” can open a single file, a photo album, or a public image-host post. Decide what recipients should see and who should be able to open it before uploading.

For a work or school account, an administrator may prevent sharing outside the organization. Labels also vary between desktop, mobile, and account types, so confirm the final sharing dialog.
Google Drive: create a link to one image
- Open Google Drive and upload the image with New → File upload, or drag it into the browser window.
- Wait until the upload completes. Right-click the image and choose Share.
- Under General access, leave Restricted for named recipients, or select Anyone with the link when every link holder may open it.
- Choose Viewer for read-only access. Use Commenter or Editor only when collaboration is required.
- Select Copy link, then send the URL through email, chat, a document, or your website.
Private sharing: keep General access as Restricted, enter each person’s email address, select Viewer, and send the invitation. The link alone will not grant access to anyone who was not added.

Folder inheritance: a file can receive broader permissions from its parent folder. If an image appears accessible to more people than expected, open the folder’s sharing settings as well as the file’s settings.
Identity disclosure: Google Drive warns that when you share a file link, your name and email are visible as the owner to people opening it. Do not use an account whose identity you need to keep hidden.
Revoke or change a Drive link
- Open the image’s Share dialog.
- Change Anyone with the link back to Restricted, or remove individual people.
- Save the change and test the old URL in a private browser window.
An anyone-with-the-link URL behaves like a bearer credential: anyone who receives or forwards it can try to open the file until you change the permission.
Google Photos: share an album or collection
- Open Google Photos and create or open an album.
- Choose Share, then enable link sharing or invite specific people.
- Copy the generated URL and send it to recipients.
Removing a collaborator does not necessarily block someone who still has the original album URL while link sharing remains enabled. To invalidate that URL, turn link sharing off and then on again; Google Photos generates a replacement link. Use this workflow when the link has been forwarded or should no longer be trusted.

Photos storage is shared across Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive, so existing account usage can reduce available space.
Imgur or another image host
- Open Imgur’s upload page and select the image.
- Before uploading, review the visibility choice for the public-post workflow described in Imgur’s help material.
- Complete the upload and copy the resulting post or image URL.
- Open the link in a private window to verify what an unauthenticated visitor can see.
Image hosts are convenient for embedding and quick public sharing, but they are not automatically private. Never upload confidential documents, identification, or personal photos until you understand the selected visibility and deletion controls.
Automate uploads with the Google Photos API
Automation uses a different sequence from the manual share dialog. Your application first uploads the binary bytes and receives an upload token; it then submits that token to create a media item in the user’s library. Implement authentication and the permissions required by Google’s current API documentation before making these calls.
File types and size
The documented API accepts AVIF, BMP, GIF, HEIC, ICO, JPG, PNG, TIFF, WEBP, and some RAW formats. The documented maximum photo size is 200 MB. That limit applies to the API upload-media guide, not necessarily to every manual upload path.

Reliable API flow
- Validate the extension, MIME type, and byte size before transmitting.
- Upload the bytes and retain the returned upload token.
- Create the media item using that token and the desired description or album.
- Store the resulting identifier and verify the item in the target account.
- Apply sharing through the supported library or album controls; do not assume that creating a media item makes it publicly reachable.
Use retries with backoff for transient network failures, but do not blindly repeat a media-item creation request unless your implementation can detect duplicates.
Security checklist before sending a link
- Open the URL while signed out or in a private browser window.
- Confirm that the image is the intended file and that no adjacent folder contents are exposed.
- Check whether the URL opens a file, album, or public post.
- Use Viewer/read-only access unless recipients genuinely need to edit.
- Remove metadata or redact sensitive details before upload when appropriate.
- Record where the link was shared so you can revoke it later.
- For sensitive material, invite named people instead of using Anyone with the link.
Troubleshooting
“Request access” appears for the recipient
The file is still Restricted, the recipient is signed into a different account, or an organization policy blocks external access. Either add the exact account as a Viewer or change General access to Anyone with the link if that level of exposure is acceptable.
The link opens a folder, not just the image
You copied a folder URL or the image inherits folder permissions. Copy the image’s own link and audit the parent folder’s sharing settings.
The link worked, then stopped
The owner changed permissions, deleted the file, or reset Google Photos link sharing. Reopen the sharing dialog, create a new link if necessary, and send the replacement.

Recipients can edit the image or its location
The role is Commenter or Editor, or the file is in a broadly shared folder. Set the file to Viewer and narrow the folder permissions.
The API upload fails
Check authentication scopes, MIME type, byte size, and whether the request completed the upload-token step before media-item creation. A photo over the documented 200 MB API limit must be resized or handled through a different workflow.
