You can store a video in DigitalOcean Spaces, but YouTube Studio’s documented upload flow asks you to select a file from your computer; it does not document importing a video directly from a Spaces URL. To get a Spaces file onto YouTube, download it first and upload it in YouTube Studio. To serve the file from Spaces, use its object URL and, if appropriate, the Spaces CDN. To broadcast a prerecorded video as a YouTube live stream that loops, you need a separate live-streaming setup—Spaces alone does not provide that function.
Choose the workflow you actually need
| Goal | Use | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Publish a prepared video on YouTube | Download the file from Spaces, then select it in YouTube Studio using Create → Upload videos. | The documented Studio flow does not import directly from a Spaces URL. |
| Store and serve a video file by URL | Upload it to a Spaces bucket; choose private or public access, and optionally enable the CDN for a Standard Storage bucket. | Spaces storage and CDN delivery do not, by themselves, upload the file to YouTube or loop it as a live broadcast. |
| Broadcast a prerecorded video as a live stream | Use a supported YouTube Live method such as an encoder, with a separate way to provide and repeat the video. | The cited YouTube and DigitalOcean instructions do not establish an automatic Spaces-to-YouTube loop workflow. |
These are distinct jobs: YouTube Studio imports and publishes videos; Spaces stores and serves objects; YouTube Live receives a live feed. A successful Spaces upload is not a YouTube upload, and a successful YouTube upload is not automatically public.
Upload a Spaces video to YouTube Studio
- Make the file available locally. If the Spaces object is private, retrieve it with authorized access or create a presigned URL for temporary access, then download the file to your computer. A public object can be fetched by anyone who has its URL, so make it public only if that is intended.
- Open YouTube Studio. Select Create → Upload videos, choose the downloaded video file, and complete the title, description, audience and other details prompted by Studio.
- Choose when and how viewers can watch. Uploading imports the file to YouTube; publishing makes the video available to viewers. Select the visibility and publishing state that suit your needs. Do not treat completion of the upload as proof that the video is publicly viewable.
- Check the processed video. YouTube says it converts uploaded videos to the highest resolution available for playback across devices and networks. Confirm the finished video and its availability in Studio before sharing its watch link.
YouTube’s documented flow begins with selecting a file from the computer. It does not describe pasting a DigitalOcean Spaces URL as the source file.
Upload and serve the file from DigitalOcean Spaces
Use the control panel for smaller uploads
- In the DigitalOcean control panel, open the bucket and select the Files tab.
- Choose the upload action, select the local file, and set its permissions to Private or Public.
- For each object, confirm that the chosen access setting matches its intended audience.
DigitalOcean Documentation, last verified in 2026, says the browser control panel accepts individual files smaller than 2 GB and batches of fewer than 100 files. For larger files or larger batches, use an S3-compatible client or the API; DigitalOcean’s doctl CLI does not support uploading files to Spaces. Multipart upload breaks a large object into parts that can be retried independently, which can improve reliability for large transfers.

Set object access deliberately
Spaces objects are private by default. A public object can be accessed by anyone with its URL; a private object requires authorization, or a presigned URL can grant temporary access. Bucket file-listing permission is separate from an individual object’s access: making an object public does not mean you must enable public listing of the bucket.
Use the CDN when you need edge delivery
DigitalOcean documents CDN integration for Standard Storage buckets. Enable the CDN and use the bucket’s CDN endpoint to serve cached content from edge servers. The documented default edge-cache TTL is one hour, so changes to an object may take time to appear at cached locations. Presigned requests are not cached, and Spaces Cold Storage does not support CDN integration. Choose storage and access settings based on the file’s purpose rather than assuming every URL is public or CDN-cached.

Can a Spaces file loop as a YouTube video or live stream?
Not through the Spaces storage and CDN features described here. They store and deliver an object; they do not establish a YouTube ingestion, transcoding, or playback-looping feature. YouTube Studio’s file-upload flow is separate from YouTube Live’s encoder workflow, and the documented instructions do not show an encoder pulling a prerecorded object from Spaces and looping it automatically.

YouTube Help says Clips are 5–60 seconds long and play on a loop from the original video’s watch page. That behavior applies to Clips; it is not evidence that an ordinary full-length YouTube video has the same loop control, or that a Spaces-hosted file can be relayed as a live stream.

Sending a live feed to YouTube
YouTube supports live streaming through methods including mobile, webcam and encoder. For an encoder stream, YouTube’s guidance is to prepare ahead, check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the watch page and mobile accessibility, and monitor audio and video quality. A stream can be public, private or unlisted. The stream key is the credential and destination information the encoder uses to send its feed to YouTube; handle it as sensitive access information.
YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the prior 90 days. Its streaming tips recommend available upload bandwidth exceed the stream’s total bitrate, with 20% headroom. That is YouTube Help’s recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable. Enabling DVR lets viewers pause, rewind and resume a live stream.

If your aim is a prerecorded video that stays live and repeats, verify the exact current encoder or service workflow you plan to use, including how it reads the video, loops it, connects the stream key, and meets YouTube’s eligibility and content rules. The Spaces and YouTube instructions above do not supply those missing steps, so a direct Spaces-to-Live recipe cannot be inferred from them.

Before uploading a video or broadcasting it as a live stream, make sure you have the rights needed for the video, music and other included material. Public availability of a Spaces object does not grant permission to reuse it, and storing a file in your own bucket does not establish that you own all rights in its contents. YouTube’s live eligibility requirements also apply independently of where the prerecorded file is stored.

Troubleshooting the common points of confusion
- YouTube Studio does not accept a Spaces URL: The documented Studio upload flow selects a file. Download the Spaces object locally, then upload that file in Studio.
- The Spaces upload fails in the browser: Check the control-panel limits: each file must be smaller than 2 GB and a batch must contain fewer than 100 files. Use an S3-compatible client or API for larger files or batches; multipart upload can make large transfers more resilient.
- A private object cannot be opened by a viewer: That is expected without authorization. Keep it private and provide authorized access or a presigned URL, or intentionally make the object public if anyone with its URL should be able to retrieve it.
- A changed file is not immediately updated through the CDN: Cached content may remain visible until the cache expires. DigitalOcean documents a one-hour default edge-cache TTL; presigned requests are not cached.
- A YouTube live stream will not start: Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s verification and restriction requirements, the encoder is using the correct stream key, and the Live Control Room preview is available. Check that upload bandwidth exceeds the total stream bitrate, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- The stream starts but viewers report access or quality problems: Check public, private or unlisted visibility, test the watch page and mobile access, and monitor the encoder’s audio and video output as YouTube advises.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a prerecorded video live on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that job—not a DigitalOcean Spaces integration. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
