Intune administrators can update the Windows Remote Help client through Microsoft Update, Enterprise App Catalog auto-update, guided update supersedence, or a manually packaged Win32 app. The right route depends on whether you want automatic deployment or a review step, and on how Remote Help is currently assigned in your tenant.

Choose an update route

Route Best fit What to plan for
Microsoft Update Microsoft Update is configured for your environment. Microsoft identifies this as an update route for Remote Help. Confirm your update policies and how the client behaves in your environment. Microsoft Remote Help deployment guidance.
Enterprise App Catalog auto-update The catalog app has a Required assignment to supported Windows devices. Intune detects a newer catalog version and updates targeted devices without requiring a new app or per-update supersedence setup. There is no built-in rollback or automatic uninstall remediation. Microsoft Enterprise App Catalog app management guidance.
Guided update supersedence You want to review a catalog update before creating its update app. Intune creates a new app that supersedes the old one. Review assignments and scope tags because some settings might not carry over. Microsoft guided update guidance.
Packaged Win32 app Your organization manages Remote Help through its own Win32 packaging process. Repackage the installer as an .intunewin file, configure install and uninstall commands and detection, then assign the app to the intended groups. Microsoft Remote Help deployment guidance.

These options are not interchangeable in every tenant: catalog auto-update requires a Required assignment, while Available assignments continue through the existing update workflow. Microsoft lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported for catalog auto-update. Check the live Intune configuration and Microsoft guidance before changing assignments.

Use Enterprise App Catalog auto-update

  1. Confirm the Remote Help app is deployed as an Enterprise App Catalog app and that the intended devices run supported Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  2. In Intune, make sure the app has a Required assignment for the device group that should receive updates. Auto-update is tied to Required assignments; Available assignments continue through the prior update workflow.
  3. Allow Intune to detect a newer catalog version and update targeted devices. No new app or per-version supersedence configuration is needed for this route.
  4. Maintain a separate recovery plan for changes that require rollback or uninstall, since catalog auto-update does not provide those actions automatically.

Use guided update supersedence when you want a review step

Guided update supersedence lets an administrator review an available Enterprise App Catalog update and create a new app that supersedes the existing app. This separates the decision to adopt a version from automatic catalog deployment.

  1. Review the update offered for the catalog app in Intune.
  2. Create the new app through the guided update workflow and confirm the supersedence relationship.
  3. Inspect the resulting app before assigning it. In particular, verify assignments and scope tags, which might not be copied from the original app.
  4. Deploy the new app to the intended device groups and monitor the rollout using your normal app deployment process.

Microsoft says most catalog app updates are typically available within 24 hours of vendor release; those requiring manual validation typically become available within seven days. These are service-level objectives in Microsoft Intune Enterprise Application Management documentation, not guarantees of availability.

Package Remote Help as a Win32 app

For the manual deployment route, Microsoft’s Remote Help instructions call for repackaging remotehelpinstaller.exe as an .intunewin file. Configure the app’s install and uninstall commands and detection settings in Intune, then assign it to the intended device groups. Use Microsoft’s current deployment page for the complete configuration and detection procedure.

  • Install: remotehelpinstaller.exe /quiet acceptTerms=1
  • Uninstall: remotehelpinstaller.exe /uninstall /quiet acceptTerms=1
  • Opt out of automatic updates: add enableAutoUpdates=0 to the install arguments if that is the intended configuration.

The acceptTerms and enableAutoUpdates arguments are case sensitive. The attended client opts users into automatic updates by default; Microsoft says an updated installer can be installed without first uninstalling the earlier version. If you disable client auto-updates, coordinate version management with the update process you choose.

Check licensing and device prerequisites

Before deployment, confirm the Remote Help requirements for your tenant and devices in Microsoft’s Remote Help planning documentation. Microsoft says each helper and sharer needs a Remote Help license, and Remote Help requires an additional subscription to Intune Plan 1 or Plan 2. Platform and device support matter; Intune-enrolled devices also need Microsoft Entra registration. Availability and capabilities can vary by environment, so validate the current requirements for your tenant and geography.

Verify the version before rollout

Microsoft’s Remote Help deployment page displayed version 5.2.1037.0 as its most recent version in the page content retrieved for this article. That figure can become stale; check the live Microsoft page or current catalog entry before using it to plan a rollout. Catalog entries, update timing, licensing details, platform support, and client versions can change.
