You can replace a hard disk drive (HDD) with a solid-state drive (SSD) on many older laptops and desktops, but the right SSD depends on the exact computer model. First confirm the drive type and interface in the manufacturer’s service manual. Then back up your files, clone the old drive or prepare a clean operating-system installation, fit the compatible SSD, and verify that the computer boots from it.
Check whether your computer supports an SSD swap
Find the computer’s full model number and consult its owner or service manual before buying a drive. The manual can confirm whether storage is replaceable, which interfaces the system supports, the drive’s physical dimensions, and how to access it. A computer’s age or the shape of its existing drive is not enough to determine compatibility.

Common upgrade paths include:
| Current setup | Likely SSD option | Confirm before purchase |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop with a replaceable 2.5-inch SATA HDD | 2.5-inch SATA SSD | Drive thickness, connector, bay, and any required bracket or spacer |
| Desktop with a 3.5-inch SATA HDD | 2.5-inch SATA SSD | SATA data and power connections, available bay, case clearance, and whether a mounting adapter is needed |
| Computer with an M.2 slot | An M.2 SSD supported by that slot | Whether the slot supports SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both; module length, keying, and supported generations |
| Computer with soldered storage or no replaceable drive | No simple drive swap may be possible | Service manual and manufacturer support for the exact model |
M.2 describes a physical module and connector format; it does not, by itself, tell you whether a slot supports SATA or NVMe. Samsung explains M.2 keying and interface differences, while Crucial recommends checking system documentation for compatibility: Crucial’s M.2 compatibility guide and Samsung’s storage support resources.
For an older computer, also verify that its firmware supports the intended drive and that the operating system you plan to use is supported. Do not assume a newer NVMe drive will work just because it fits an M.2 slot.

Choose cloning or a clean operating-system installation
Back up important files to separate storage or a trusted cloud service before changing hardware. A clone can transfer the existing operating system, applications, and data, but it is not a separate backup of your files.
Clone the old drive
Cloning is useful if you want to keep your existing system setup. Check that the target SSD has enough usable capacity for the partitions and data being copied, and that the cloning software supports your source and target configuration. If you need to connect a 2.5-inch SATA SSD externally, a SATA-to-USB cable or enclosure may work; that accessory does not necessarily support M.2 or NVMe drives.

- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 535MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
Cloning steps vary with the software, drive layout, encryption, and storage controller. Use the instructions for the specific SSD and migration utility. Samsung describes Data Migration in Magician for migrating an existing drive to a new Samsung SSD, with feature support that can vary by drive and configuration. Crucial also provides cloning guidance: Crucial SSD installation and cloning guidance and Samsung storage tools and support.

Install the operating system fresh
A clean installation avoids carrying over the old software setup, but you will need to reinstall applications and restore personal files from your backup. Make sure you have the installation media and any account or recovery details you need before removing the old drive.

- 4K Aligned Random Write: up to 30K IOPs
Install the SSD using the computer’s manual
- Shut down and disconnect power. Turn the computer fully off and unplug it. Remove a laptop battery only if the manufacturer’s instructions for that model call for it.
- Open the computer as specified. Follow the model-specific service instructions rather than forcing a cover or guessing where screws are located. Use the screwdriver type specified by the manual.
- Protect and handle components carefully. Ground yourself by touching unpainted metal or use an ESD wrist strap. Avoid touching connector contacts. See Crucial’s SSD installation precautions.
- Remove the old drive and transfer mounting parts. Keep any screws, caddy, bracket, or spacer needed to secure the new SSD. Do not force a connector or module into place.
- Fit the compatible SSD. For a typical desktop SATA installation, connect SATA data and power leads. A 2.5-inch SSD may need a 2.5-to-3.5-inch mounting adapter if the case has only a larger bay. For an M.2 NVMe module, align the notch, insert it at the angle described in the manual, then secure it at the correct mount. The precise slot, screw, and heatsink arrangement depends on the computer or motherboard.
- Close the case and reconnect power. Follow the manual’s reassembly steps before starting the computer.
Boot from the SSD and verify the upgrade
After cloning, the computer may keep booting from the original drive if it remains connected. If needed, use the computer’s boot selection or firmware settings to select the SSD as the primary boot drive; Crucial’s NVMe installation walkthrough describes changing the primary drive after cloning.
- Confirm the operating system starts from the SSD.
- Check that your important files are present and that essential applications open.
- Keep the old drive unchanged until you have verified the new setup. Then decide whether to store, repurpose, or erase it.
Troubleshoot if the SSD is missing or will not boot
The SSD does not appear in the computer
Shut down and disconnect power, then check that the drive is seated correctly and that SATA cables, power leads, caddies, and brackets are secure. For an M.2 drive, confirm the slot supports its protocol and length. Check whether the computer’s firmware lists the drive. If you are connecting a drive externally for cloning, verify that the cable or enclosure supports that drive type. Do not assume the SSD is defective just because migration software does not detect it; support can vary by drive and controller configuration. Samsung documents feature and configuration differences in its storage tool support information.

The computer starts from the old drive or does not boot after cloning
If both drives are connected, select the SSD as the boot drive or temporarily disconnect the old drive after shutting down, following the computer’s manual. If the SSD still will not boot, review the cloning software’s instructions for your source layout and system configuration. Keep the old drive intact while you troubleshoot so you retain a fallback copy.
