Update both iOS and WhatsApp: iOS updates install operating-system security fixes, while WhatsApp updates deliver fixes to the app. On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest update offered for your device. Then open the Apple App Store, find WhatsApp Messenger, and tap Update if it appears. These steps reduce risk, but do not establish that every PDF is dangerous—or that a specific iOS vulnerability was caused by a PDF.
Update iOS on your iPhone
iOS updates address security issues in the operating system and its file-processing components. WhatsApp recommends keeping your iPhone on the latest iOS version available, noting that older iOS versions may be more prone to malware. WhatsApp’s account-safety guidance also gives the iOS update path.

- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then Software Update.
- Install the newest update offered for your iPhone and follow the prompts.
The update offered depends on the iPhone model and the software branch available for it. Use the version shown in Settings rather than assuming every iPhone can install the same release. If no update appears, your device may already be current for its supported branch, or it may not support a newer release.

An iOS update and a WhatsApp update do different jobs; install both when available rather than treating one as a replacement for the other.

- Open the Apple App Store.
- Search for WhatsApp Messenger.
- Tap Update if it is shown. If the button says Open, the store is not currently offering an update for that app, account, and device.
WhatsApp recommends using a strong internet connection and backing up chat history before updating. App Store update availability may vary by region because of local regulations. See WhatsApp’s instructions for updating the app.
What Apple’s malicious-file warning does—and does not—say
Apple’s iOS 26.7.1 security advisory, dated September 28, 2026, describes a CoreGraphics issue: “Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution.” Apple says it is aware of a report that the issue may have been exploited in an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals on iOS versions before iOS 27. The advisory lists iPhone 11 and later for iOS 26.7.1.

The advisory does not identify the crafted file as a PDF, name WhatsApp as the delivery method, or say that ordinary PDF attachments are generally dangerous. It is evidence that a crafted-file vulnerability can have serious consequences and that installing security updates matters—not proof that opening any particular WhatsApp PDF will hack an iPhone. Other iPhone models and iOS branches may have different updates available, so check Software Update on your device.

WhatsApp’s current supported-operating-systems guidance lists iOS 15.1 and newer as supported. It says that beginning November 30, 2026, WhatsApp will support only iOS 15.5 and newer. WhatsApp explains that older systems may no longer receive current security updates and that it retires older operating systems over time.

If your iPhone cannot install an iOS version that WhatsApp supports, app compatibility and operating-system security are separate concerns. Check the iOS version your model can install and WhatsApp’s current requirements; the support policy can change.
Secure your WhatsApp account separately
WhatsApp also recommends reviewing devices linked to your account and enabling two-step verification. These measures help protect account access, but they do not patch an iOS file-processing flaw or substitute for installing iOS and app updates. Follow the relevant account settings described in WhatsApp’s account-safety guidance.

Should you turn on Lockdown Mode?
Lockdown Mode is intended for people who believe they may be targeted by highly sophisticated cyberattacks, not as a routine requirement for everyone. Apple describes it as an extreme, optional protection that limits some apps, websites, and features; expect reduced functionality.

To find it, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode. Apple says most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature. If you have a credible reason to believe you are personally targeted, seek specialist support and consider whether Lockdown Mode is appropriate. It does not replace updates. Apple’s separate guidance on protection from specific web attacks says to update as soon as possible even when discussing Lockdown Mode as an additional measure; that guidance is not proof of protection from every malicious PDF.

What to do if you receive a suspicious PDF
- Do not open an attachment you were not expecting or cannot verify with the sender. Confirm through a separate trusted channel if necessary.
- Keep iOS and WhatsApp current using the update paths above. Updating reduces exposure to known issues but cannot guarantee that every file is safe.
- Do not assume that an account-security step such as two-step verification fixes a device vulnerability; it protects a different part of the problem.
- If you have a credible targeted-threat concern, contact a qualified security professional rather than relying on routine settings alone.
