Short answer: You generally cannot count on editing an FFmpeg concat list while FFmpeg is running to add or replace upcoming videos. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes concatenation methods, but does not document live rereading of an edited local list. To change the queue while keeping your YouTube broadcast connected, use a playback controller that can switch inputs while one encoder remains active; otherwise, plan a controlled restart.
First identify which playlist you mean
“Playlist” can refer to different parts of a streaming setup. A local concat list is an FFmpeg input definition; an HLS playlist is an output manifest describing generated segments; a separate player or scheduling service may manage its own queue. Changing one does not automatically change the others.
- Local concat input: A text file passed to FFmpeg with an input format such as
-f concat. It tells FFmpeg which files to read. - HLS output playlist: A manifest that the HLS muxer updates as it produces output segments. It is not the local input queue.
- External playback queue: A controller or player selects the next source and supplies it to the encoder. This is the kind of design needed for dynamic scheduling.
FFmpeg’s FAQ documents the concat filter, concat demuxer, and concat protocol as ways to join files, not as a live queue editor. Its concat filter is recommended when re-encoding is needed; the concat demuxer can avoid re-encoding in suitable circumstances. Those capabilities do not establish that an edited list file will be reloaded during a running stream. See the FFmpeg FAQ on joining video files.

Do not rely on it. When FFmpeg starts reading a concat input, its active input behavior is not documented as watching the local list for edits. Modifying the file on disk therefore is not a dependable way to add, remove, or replace queued videos in an already-running process.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
This is a documentation limit, not a claim that every possible wrapper or custom build behaves identically. If your setup includes a controller that reloads a queue, that behavior belongs to the controller and should be verified for its version and configuration. Stock concat documentation alone does not promise a hot reload.
How to change upcoming videos without disconnecting YouTube
Keep the output encoder and its connection to YouTube running, and make a separate playback controller hand the next source to that encoder. The queue changes at the input-selection layer, not by assuming the concat list will be re-read.

- Keep a stable output path. Configure one encoder process to maintain the YouTube ingest connection. Avoid restarting that process for every change if the requirement is to keep the broadcast connected.
- Use a live-selectable input controller or player. It must be able to queue, remove, or select files and present each selected source to the same still-running encoder. Confirm that the specific controller supports this workflow; FFmpeg’s concat methods by themselves are not a documented live scheduler.
- Check source compatibility. Compare video codec, resolution, frame rate, timestamps, audio presence, and audio layout across files. Different parameters can require normalization or re-encoding, and the official material cited here does not guarantee gapless switching between arbitrary sources.
- Decide how transitions should behave. Establish whether a handoff cuts immediately, waits for a boundary, or allows a gap. Validate the behavior with your actual command and media, since seamless transitions are not assured merely by keeping the encoder process alive.
- Test before relying on it live. Exercise additions, replacements, removals, and a transition between files in a private or controlled stream. Confirm that both audio and video continue and that YouTube’s stream remains connected.
The design separates two jobs: the controller decides what plays next, while the encoder maintains the output connection. The exact command and transition behavior depend on the controller and media; the available official documentation does not specify a turnkey live queue controller.
When a controlled restart is the safer option
If the current pipeline only accepts a fixed concat input and has no tested input-switching controller, schedule a restart to apply the revised list. This is more predictable than assuming a running process will notice an edit. It does not meet a strict no-interruption requirement, so arrange the change during a suitable window and verify the new queue before reconnecting.

FFmpeg’s documented concatenation methods remain useful for preparing or joining media, but choosing the concat filter, demuxer, or protocol is not by itself a solution for editing an active schedule.
If the output uses YouTube HLS ingestion
HLS settings concern delivery of the encoded output to YouTube; they do not make FFmpeg reread a local concat input file. YouTube Help specifies these HLS ingest requirements:

- Use TS (Transport Stream) segments with a duration between 1 and 4 seconds.
- Do not use byte ranges.
- Keep the rolling playlist to no more than five outstanding segments.
- Use HTTPS POST/PUT, with no encryption other than HTTPS.
YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream like RTMP. These are HLS-specific requirements, not general rules for updating an FFmpeg input queue. Check the current YouTube Help guide to HLS ingestion when configuring the ingest path.
Common problems and fixes
- An edited list has no effect: The running FFmpeg process is not documented as reloading it. Use a tested queue controller, or stop and restart with the revised list.
- The stream disconnects during a video change: The input handoff may be restarting the encoder or output connection rather than switching sources underneath a persistent encoder. Review the controller’s behavior and test whether it can maintain one output process.
- Video changes but audio drops or becomes mismatched: Compare audio presence, channel layout, sample rate, and timestamps between sources, then normalize or configure the playback path to handle the difference.
- A transition freezes, jumps, or leaves a gap: Source parameters or timing may not align, or the controller may not provide the transition behavior you expect. Test those exact files and settings; arbitrary media cannot be assumed to switch seamlessly.
- An HLS stream has unexpected delay or rejected segments: Check segment format and duration, playlist window, byte-range use, and HTTPS request method against YouTube’s HLS requirements. HLS’s segment-based delivery has higher latency than continuous RTMP.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream checks
Before adding a video to a live queue, confirm that you have the rights needed to stream its picture and sound on YouTube. A technically successful handoff does not establish permission to use the material, and changing files does not resolve copyright or other YouTube policy issues. Use the copyright safety checklist as a pre-stream review aid.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than a custom FFmpeg controller, StreamNeo is a cloud service that keeps the stream running without leaving a computer, OBS, or home connection on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
