Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →To update the Chromatic CLI in a GitHub Actions workflow that uses Chromatic’s GitHub Action, change the version tag on the uses line. Use chromaui/action@latest to follow all updates, chromaui/action@vX to stay on a major version, or chromaui/action@vX.Y.Z to pin a specific release. The action typically auto-upgrades the CLI; the tag sets the update policy. Chromatic’s GitHub Actions documentation describes these options.
Choose how the workflow should receive Chromatic updates
Pick the tag according to how much change you want CI to accept automatically:
| Update policy | Tag pattern | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Follow all updates | chromaui/action@latest |
Automatically receives all new updates. |
| Follow one major version | chromaui/action@vX |
Receives features and bug fixes within the selected major version while avoiding breaking changes from a new major version. |
| Pin a specific release | chromaui/action@vX.Y.Z |
Stays on that specific CLI version until you edit the workflow tag. |
Replace X or X.Y.Z with the major version or full release you intend to use. Chromatic’s documentation uses v10 and v10.0.0 to illustrate the tag formats; those examples are not a recommendation for the latest release. A major tag is a middle ground: updates within that line arrive automatically, but moving to another major requires a deliberate edit.
Update the GitHub Action
- Open the workflow file that runs Chromatic, usually a YAML file in
.github/workflows/. - Find the Chromatic step and change the tag after
chromaui/action@to your chosen policy. - Commit the change and run the workflow. Check the run’s logs and Chromatic result to confirm that the step completed successfully.
For example, a major-version tag looks like this:
- name: Run Chromatic
uses: chromaui/action@vX
with:
projectToken: ${{ secrets.CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN }}
Use chromaui/action@latest instead to follow every update, or a full tag such as chromaui/action@vX.Y.Z to pin a release. The example keeps the project token in a GitHub Actions repository secret; do not put its value directly in committed YAML.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check the surrounding workflow
Changing the action tag does not require redesigning the rest of the workflow, but review the existing setup when troubleshooting or upgrading. Chromatic’s example checks out the repository with fetch-depth: 0, sets up Node, installs dependencies, and passes the project token from a repository secret. Keep the project’s Node version and package-manager lockfile workflow consistent with the rest of the job. See Chromatic’s GitHub Actions setup.
Chromatic recommends running the step on push. A pull_request trigger can, in some circumstances, result in lost baselines or an unexpected baseline from main. Treat the trigger as a separate workflow decision: changing the action version does not itself require changing the event.

If the workflow runs the CLI directly with npx
If your workflow runs npx chromatic and the project does not have chromatic installed as a dependency, npx downloads and runs the latest version. That is convenient, but it does not make the CLI version follow the project’s dependency manifest and lockfile.
To manage the CLI version through the project’s dependency setup, add Chromatic as a development dependency with the package manager already used by the project:

npm install chromatic --save-devyarn add --dev chromaticpnpm add --save-dev chromatic
Commit the resulting manifest and lockfile changes, then install dependencies in CI using the project’s normal locked-install process. Chromatic recommends installing the package when using its CLI with Vitest, Playwright, or Cypress so the CLI stays in sync with the corresponding Chromatic test package. This is not stated as a requirement for every basic Storybook workflow. See Chromatic’s CLI documentation.
Troubleshoot an update
- The workflow still uses a different version policy: Check the exact tag after
chromaui/action@. A full version tag is pinned; a major tag follows that major line;latestfollows all updates. - The direct CLI command seems to change versions unexpectedly: If the project does not install Chromatic as a dependency,
npx chromaticdownloads the latest CLI. Add the development dependency and commit the lockfile if you want dependency-managed versioning. - The Chromatic step cannot authenticate: Confirm that the repository has a
CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKENsecret and that the workflow references it as${{ secrets.CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN }}. Never commit the token itself. - The job fails during checkout or dependency setup: Review the workflow’s checkout depth, Node setup, dependency installation, and lockfile handling alongside the Chromatic step; these are part of Chromatic’s documented setup.
- Baselines appear unexpected after changing the trigger: Chromatic notes that
pull_requestcan cause unexpected baseline behavior in some circumstances and recommendspushfor the action step. Reassess the trigger separately from the version-tag change.
