If you’re searching for “how to update smart switch on Samsung,” first identify what needs updating. Samsung’s SmartThings app manages supported smart-home devices, while Smart Switch is a computer app that can update a connected Galaxy phone or tablet. They are separate tools and do not update one another.
Choose the matching task: update the SmartThings app, check firmware for a supported SmartThings device or Wifi hub, or use Smart Switch on a computer to update a Galaxy device. The steps below follow Samsung’s U.S. support instructions; menus and availability may vary by model, app version, software version, carrier, and market.
Update the SmartThings app
An app update changes SmartThings itself. It is separate from firmware for a switch, sensor, outlet, button, or hub connected to the app.
- In SmartThings: Open the app, tap Menu (three horizontal lines), then Settings > About SmartThings. Tap Update if it appears and follow the prompts.
- In Google Play: Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, then choose Manage apps & device > Updates available. Tap Update beside SmartThings if an update is listed.

Check firmware for a supported SmartThings device
For the sensors, outlets, and buttons covered by Samsung’s instructions, use the device’s information screen. This route is not established for every smart-switch model, so check the support instructions for your exact model before assuming it applies.
- Open SmartThings and select the relevant home or location and device.
- Tap More options (three dots) > Information.
- If Firmware update appears, select it and follow the on-screen steps. Samsung says the option is absent when no update is available through this route at that time.
A supported device may briefly go offline while its firmware installs. Samsung’s instructions: Firmware updates for SmartThings sensors, outlets and buttons.

Check firmware settings for a SmartThings Wifi hub
The Wifi hub has a separate firmware workflow; it is not the same as the device-information steps above.

- In SmartThings, open Devices and select the Wifi hub.
- Tap More Options > Settings > Device firmware updates.
- Confirm that Automatic update is selected.

Update a Galaxy phone or tablet with Smart Switch
Use Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac if your target is Galaxy device software—not a smart-home switch or SmartThings firmware.
- Install or open Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone or tablet to the computer with its USB cable and wait for Smart Switch to detect it.
- If Update is offered, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the device until the update finishes. The device reboots as part of the process.

If a SmartThings device is unresponsive
An update is not the first explanation to assume when a device is disconnected or showing the wrong status. Samsung’s troubleshooting advice includes checking power and connectivity, then checking for SmartThings and the device’s native-app updates.
Resetting and adding a hub again is troubleshooting, not a routine firmware-update step. Samsung says that after resetting and re-adding a hub, closing and reopening SmartThings makes the app check the hub firmware. Follow the troubleshooting instructions for the specific symptom rather than resetting a device just to look for an update: SmartThings device does not respond or has disconnected or incorrect status.

Which update do you need?
- SmartThings app: Use SmartThings settings or the Play Store.
- Supported sensor, outlet, or button firmware: Open the device’s Information screen and look for Firmware update.
- SmartThings Wifi hub firmware: Check Device firmware updates in the hub’s settings.
- Galaxy phone or tablet software: Connect it to Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
