To install an official Android update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the tablet’s prompts. To replace the operating system manually, you need instructions and files for the tablet’s exact model and variant; there is no universal Android image or safe, one-size-fits-all flashing procedure.
Choose the right installation path
“Install a new Android OS” can mean either applying an update from the tablet maker or replacing the system software yourself. Start with the supported update route unless you specifically need a different operating system and have confirmed your tablet is supported.

How to install an official Android update
- Check the tablet’s identity and current software. In Settings, open About tablet and note the manufacturer, full model number, Android version, build number, security update status, and Google Play system update status. Menu names vary by manufacturer and Android version. Record any region or carrier variant shown on the device or its support materials.
- Prepare the tablet. Connect to Wi-Fi and charge it to at least 75%, as Google recommends. Keep important files backed up before installing an update.
- Check for an update. Open Settings > System > Software updates, check for available updates, and follow the on-screen instructions. Some manufacturers use different menu labels or provide updates through their own support process.
- If no update appears, check the exact model’s support information. Look at the manufacturer’s or carrier’s support page for that model and variant. Update schedules differ by device, manufacturer, and sometimes carrier; an absent update does not mean that a generic Android download is suitable.
Google notes that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions. If the manufacturer or carrier does not offer a newer version for your model, the normal Settings route cannot install one that is not supported.

What to confirm before installing a custom Android OS
A custom OS is not a generic Android update package. Android’s Generic System Image documentation says there is no universal flashing procedure for every device and points users to manufacturer instructions. Treat the exact tablet model and variant as essential: similar names do not establish that a build, firmware package, or procedure is interchangeable.

- Exact device support: Find the ROM project’s instructions for your full model and variant. Confirm that the page explicitly supports it.
- Prerequisites: Check whether the instructions require particular stock firmware, a specific bootloader state, a recovery environment, or a particular partition layout. Follow the required installation sequence exactly.
- Unlock eligibility: Confirm that the manufacturer permits bootloader unlocking for your model. Do not assume that every tablet can be unlocked.
- Correct files and tools: Use only the image and computer tool specified for the device. Android Flash Tool, for example, supports only listed devices and is intended for prebuilt builds. Fastboot is a lower-level flashing tool; its availability does not make an image compatible with your tablet.
- Recovery plan: Read the device-specific instructions for installation failures and recovery before starting. Do not improvise commands or substitute files from another model.
LineageOS warns that incorrect firmware can cause an installation to fail, trigger unexpected crashes, or permanently damage a device. That warning is a reason to verify the model and instructions before downloading or flashing anything—not after a problem occurs.
Back up before unlocking or flashing
Assume that unlocking the bootloader or flashing a system image can erase the tablet. Android’s documented bootloader-unlock process warns the user and performs a factory reset; Google’s Fastboot documentation also says unlocking erases data. Save photos, downloads, app data, and other important files somewhere separate, and verify that the backup is accessible before proceeding.

Do not treat unlocking as a reversible step that preserves your data. If you cannot accept a wipe or do not have a verified backup, do not start a manual installation.
Understand the security and compatibility trade-offs
Most Android devices ship with locked bootloaders. In Android’s bootloader documentation, the Android Open Source Project explains that a locked device restricts flashing the bootloader or device partitions. On supported devices, unlocking allows modified software to be installed, but the device must confirm the action and reset user data.

Verified Boot is part of the trade-off. A locked device checks software against its trusted root of trust; an unlocked device can boot modified software and displays a warning. A custom OS also has not undergone the same testing as the tablet maker’s original software. Hardware features or apps may not work correctly, compatibility can change, and the original security assurances may no longer apply. A successful installation or performance improvement is not guaranteed.

The exact download, bootloader eligibility, recovery method, and installation sequence depend on the tablet’s make, full model number, region or carrier variant, and current firmware. Without those details, a generic command sequence would be unsafe. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for an official update or the ROM project’s exact-device guide for a custom OS. For a computer-based Fastboot process, the device connects to a workstation; the suitable data-capable USB cable depends on the tablet’s port and the computer connection.
