To update Norton Antivirus on a Windows PC or Mac, open Norton and run LiveUpdate; repeat until Norton confirms it has the latest protection updates. On Android or iPhone, update the Norton app through Google Play or the App Store. Keep the device online and check that your subscription is active.
Update Norton Antivirus on Windows

Open Norton device security.

In the left pane, select Security.

Open the LiveUpdate tile.

In the LiveUpdate window, select Update Now or Check Now.

Wait for the update to finish, then run LiveUpdate again until Norton reports, “Your Norton product has the latest protection updates.”

To check when Norton last received definitions, open LiveUpdate’s Check for Updates tab and review the last-updated date. Norton suggests running an update if that date is more than a day or two old. Norton’s LiveUpdate instructions explain the process.

Check automatic updates
Norton says automatic LiveUpdate normally downloads and installs definition and program updates regularly. To check its setting, go to Security > LiveUpdate > Open > Settings, then enable automatic updates for virus definitions and the Norton application. The exact labels can vary by product version.
Update Norton on a Mac
Open Norton and use LiveUpdate to obtain available security and program updates, following the prompts shown in your version. Norton’s instructions describe LiveUpdate for Windows and Mac. See Norton’s device security update guidance.
Update the Norton app on Android or iPhone
Android
-
Open Google Play.
-
Search for the Norton app.
-
Tap Update if the button is available.
iPhone or iPad
-
Open the App Store and tap your profile icon.

Find the Norton app in the available updates list.

Tap Update if it appears.
The Update option appears only when a new Norton app version is available, according to Norton’s mobile app instructions.

Understand what a Norton update changes
On desktop, LiveUpdate can install virus definitions and program updates. This routine process is distinct from upgrading to an entirely new product version. Norton’s Mac manual describes that distinction, but it dates to approximately 2020; follow current in-app prompts for any major-version upgrade workflow. Norton Security: Product Manual.
Fix Norton LiveUpdate problems
If LiveUpdate will not complete or Norton displays an error, check these issues:

Internet connection: Confirm the computer is online and try again.

First update after installation: Allow extra time; the initial update may take longer.

Available disk space: Free space if the drive is nearly full.

Date and time: Correct the computer’s clock and time zone.

Firewall or parental controls: Check whether Norton Firewall traffic permissions or parental-application settings are blocking the update.

Proxy configuration: Review proxy settings if your connection uses a proxy.

Norton service availability: A service disruption can prevent LiveUpdate. Check Norton’s service status and retry later if services are affected.

Norton says security updates are available while the subscription is active. If Norton reports that the subscription has expired, the device may not be protected against emerging threats; renewing alone is not a guaranteed fix for every update error.
Windows support also depends on the operating-system version and Norton product. Norton’s compatibility information distinguishes product updates from malware-definition and compatibility updates on legacy systems, so check the current Norton Windows compatibility page for your specific Windows version before assuming every feature or upgrade is supported.
