Update Loki reference screenshots only after you have run the comparison and confirmed that the rendered change is intentional. Run yarn loki test, inspect both the current screenshots and visual differences, then use yarn loki approve to accept approved changes. If a difference is a regression or test-environment problem, fix it and rerun instead of refreshing the baseline.
Use review, not refresh, as the rule
A reference screenshot is the image Loki compares against later runs. Replacing it changes what the test treats as expected, so approval is a review decision—not routine cleanup. Keep the UI change and its approved screenshots together in the same code review so reviewers can judge whether the new appearance is intended.
The Loki project’s documented sequence is to start Storybook and any required simulator or emulator, create initial references with yarn loki update, make UI changes, run yarn loki test, inspect the result, and approve intended differences with yarn loki approve. See the Loki README and Getting Started guide. Commands and defaults can vary by Loki version and project configuration; check the version pinned by your project.
Update references safely
- Start the capture environment. Run the Storybook instance Loki will use. If the configured target is an iOS simulator or Android emulator, start that too; Loki does not start these environments for you. Use the browser or mobile target configured for your project.
- Create references only when needed. For an initial baseline, run
yarn loki update. This captures screenshots and updates references; it is not the normal command for reviewing an existing baseline. - Make the intended UI change, then compare. Run
yarn loki test. Review the generated current screenshots and difference images before deciding what to do next. - Inspect the evidence. Check the rendered screenshot and its diff for each changed story. Confirm the difference matches the change you intended, and look for unrelated layout, typography, color, missing-content, or rendering changes. Loki’s guide describes outputs in
loki/currentandloki/difference; these are documented examples, not guaranteed paths for every configuration or version. - Approve only intentional changes. When review confirms the appearance is correct, run
yarn loki approve. The approve command uses images generated in the last run to update references and can prune outdated references. - Commit code and references together. Include the approved reference files with the implementation change, then review both in Git. The Loki guide recommends checking references into Git; Git LFS is an optional storage choice.
Choose full approval or failed-test-only approval
Use the normal approval command when you have reviewed the full set of generated images and want to update references accordingly. Loki’s CLI also documents --diffOnly, which limits approval to files that failed the previous test run. It can reduce the scope of replacement when you want to approve only differences from that test, but it does not replace visual review. Check the CLI for your pinned version before using the option: Loki CLI reference.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
When not to approve
If the rendered change is not intended, leave the reference untouched. Fix the component, story, or capture setup that caused the difference and run yarn loki test again. A baseline update that absorbs an unexplained difference can make future comparisons accept a defect as normal.
- Unexpected component change: correct the implementation and retest.
- Inconsistent rendering: investigate whether the browser, simulator, fonts, viewport, or other capture conditions differ from the established setup before accepting images.
- Missing or blank output: treat it as a capture issue to diagnose, not as a new expected appearance.
Make missing baselines fail in CI
For continuous integration, Loki documents --requireReference to fail when a reference is missing, rather than silently introducing one. Its CI guidance describes a static Storybook build and test pattern; adapt it to the scripts and Loki version your project uses. This makes missing references visible as a review task instead of allowing CI to normalize them automatically. See Loki CI documentation.

Capture target and repeatability
The Loki README lists Chrome in Docker, Chrome in AWS Lambda, local Chrome, iOS simulator, and Android emulator as capture targets. Its README also lists Node 16 or later as a prerequisite. These are version-sensitive statements in project documentation, so verify them against your installed Loki version and the target your stories require. The CLI documentation calls Docker Chrome recommended, but the suitable target depends on whether you test web or native stories and on your CI environment.
For reliable comparisons, keep the capture target and its relevant environment consistent between reference creation and later tests. Changing target or configuration at the same time as accepting a UI change makes it harder to tell whether a difference came from the product or the capture setup.

Or skip the browser setup
For a one-off screenshot of a public page outside Loki’s component-baseline workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a single-request screenshot API. Loki remains the tool for Storybook screenshot baselines and their comparison/approval workflow; ScreenshotNeo is an alternative for capturing website pages without setting up a browser locally. It accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and other MCP clients.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page to capture):
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and setup. ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Learn about ScreenshotNeo, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Common problems
- References changed more broadly than expected: approval may include generated images beyond the intended failures or prune outdated references. Review the prior test output and use the documented
--diffOnlyoption when its scope suits the task, after verifying support in your installed CLI. - No useful comparison appears: confirm Storybook and the required simulator or emulator are running and that Loki is targeting the expected stories and environment.
- CI reports a missing reference: with
--requireReference, this is a deliberate failure requiring a reviewed baseline; generate and inspect it in an appropriate review workflow, then commit it. - Local and CI images differ: compare their capture targets and setup. Do not approve environment drift as a UI change until the capture conditions are understood.
