To mitigate Spectre-v2 Branch History Injection (BHI), install the latest supported kernel update for your Linux distribution, apply any relevant CPU microcode or firmware update through supported channels, reboot, and check the kernel’s BHI status. The right packages depend on your distribution, release, CPU, and whether Linux is running as a host, guest, or hypervisor; a kernel update alone does not guarantee full mitigation on every system.

If you are asking, “How do I update Linux to mitigate Spectre-v2 BHI attacks?”, the safe approach is to use your distribution’s own update guidance rather than copy a package command or version from another system.

What BHI is—and what Linux mitigation addresses

Branch History Injection (BHI) is a Spectre variant 2 attack path. It poisons the Branch History Buffer (BHB) to influence indirect branch prediction toward a Branch Target Buffer (BTB) entry, including one that does not match the indirect branch’s source address. Because branch history can be shared across privilege levels, Enhanced IBRS alone does not necessarily prevent this attack path. The Linux kernel’s Spectre documentation recommends BHI_DIS_S, where supported, or a BHB clearing sequence for full BHB protection.

The kernel generally chooses mitigations appropriate for the CPU. Whether the system can use a particular mitigation—and whether additional microcode is needed—depends on the processor and platform.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Update Linux and check BHI status

  1. Identify the system. Note your Linux distribution and release, CPU model or architecture, and whether the machine is a physical host, virtual-machine guest, or hypervisor. These details determine which supported kernel and firmware updates apply.
  2. Install supported updates. Use the distribution’s normal security and kernel update channel for your release. If your distribution or hardware vendor provides applicable CPU microcode or firmware updates, install them through its supported mechanism. Do not treat an arbitrary firmware download or an old advisory’s package version as a current recommendation.
  3. Reboot into the updated kernel. A package being installed does not mean the running system has switched to it. After reboot, confirm that the system is running the kernel you intended to install.
  4. Read the kernel’s status report. Run cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/vulnerabilities/spectre_v2. The file reports the kernel’s Spectre-v2 mitigation status, including BHI-specific information.
  5. Act on the BHI result. If the report says BHI: Vulnerable, check for further supported kernel, microcode, or hypervisor updates for that system. Keep updates current and recheck after applying them.

How to interpret the BHI status

The exact output can include other Spectre-v2 details; focus on the BHI portion. Linux documents states such as BHI: Not affected, BHI: BHI_DIS_S, and software-loop mitigation reports, including BHI: SW loop, KVM SW loop. These indicate the kernel’s reported protection state, with the wording reflecting the mitigation in use. A BHI: Vulnerable result means the kernel reports that the system or a component—potentially KVM—remains exposed.

A microcode update may be necessary for full mitigation. Where required microcode is unavailable, Linux may continue to report vulnerability; a newer kernel package by itself cannot supply firmware support that the CPU platform lacks. Use the system vendor’s or distribution’s supported update path and status report rather than assuming a particular microcode version guarantees protection.

Why there is no universal update command or kernel version

Linux distributions package and deliver kernels differently, and supported releases change over time. Ubuntu’s BHI guidance recommends updating to the latest kernel, but its listed package versions refer to March 2022 and are historical—not a current version list for 2026. Consult the update instructions for your specific distribution and release.

Coverage also depends on where Linux runs. A guest’s kernel status does not by itself establish the mitigation state of the host or hypervisor. If the status names KVM or another component as vulnerable, address the relevant host or virtualization updates as well.

Do not disable Spectre mitigations as a shortcut

The kernel provides boot controls such as spectre_v2={option} and spectre_bhi={option}, but its documentation says it generally selects reasonable defaults for the CPU. Changing those controls can alter protections. Do not disable or override mitigations to seek a performance benefit unless authoritative, platform-specific guidance calls for a particular setting.

What a clean status report does—and does not—establish

The status file tells you what mitigation the running kernel reports; it is not a guarantee that every speculative-execution attack is impossible. A 2024 USENIX Security paper on native BHI described exploitable kernel gadgets and reported a kernel-memory leak that bypassed deployed mitigations including FineIBT. The paper records public disclosure on April 9, 2024, following disclosure to vendors and the Linux kernel in October 2023. This context does not replace Linux’s mitigation guidance; it is a reason to keep the system updated and interpret the status as a report about the kernel’s stated mitigation, not a universal security certification. See the USENIX Security 2024 paper.
