For a basic pass/fail result and a link back to Jenkins, report a GitHub commit status. If reviewers need a summary or annotations in GitHub, use Jenkins’ GitHub Checks integration instead. In either case, the result must be attached to the commit SHA GitHub checks for the pull request; a result on the temporary merge commit may not appear as a required check on the pull request head.
Choose a commit status or a GitHub Check
| What you need | Use | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A pending, successful, failed, or errored result with a link to the Jenkins build | Jenkins GitHub plugin commit-status reporting | Simple state attached to a commit; it does not provide the richer review output of a Check. |
| Structured output such as a summary or annotations in GitHub | Jenkins Checks API plugin with its GitHub Checks implementation | Requires a GitHub App with the appropriate Checks permissions, plus correct SHA and check-name configuration. |
These results are attached to commits, and GitHub reflects applicable statuses on pull requests involving those commits. A status can include a description, a target URL to the Jenkins build, and a stable context such as continuous-integration/jenkins.
Publish a simple commit status
The Jenkins GitHub plugin supports reporting build status as a GitHub commit status. Configure the job’s GitHub integration and credentials for the repository, then enable or use its build-status reporting so the job reports its outcome. In GitHub, use a consistent context to identify this Jenkins job and link the result to the build page.
GitHub accepts these commit-status states: pending, success, failure, and error. Use pending while the job is running, then report the final outcome. Keep the context stable for a single job; if multiple jobs report to the same commit, give them distinct contexts so their results remain distinguishable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep webhook permissions separate
Webhook setup and publishing a status are separate tasks. The Jenkins GitHub plugin’s hook-management documentation mentions a token with admin:org_hook for managing hooks. That is not a universal permission requirement for publishing Checks, nor should it be treated as a general-purpose credential requirement for every status-reporting setup. Grant only the permissions needed for the integration you configure.
Publish a richer GitHub Check
Install and configure the Jenkins Checks API plugin and its GitHub Checks implementation when a plain state is not enough. The Checks API plugin supports publishing from a Pipeline with publishChecks; the GitHub implementation uses GitHub’s Checks API. Check runs can carry richer review output, including summaries and annotations.

GitHub makes Checks API writes available to GitHub Apps. For check-run management, the App needs checks:write; the Jenkins GitHub Checks plugin documentation calls for a GitHub App with Checks read/write permission. Configure that App for the repository and use its credentials for the Checks integration. Do not substitute a personal token or webhook-management permission based on assumption: use the credential type and permissions the plugin configuration requires.
Because plugin setup and available Pipeline parameters depend on the installed plugin version and job configuration, use the installed Checks API plugin’s Pipeline reference for the precise publishChecks arguments rather than copying an unverified snippet. The essential configuration decisions are the GitHub App, the check name, and the SHA to which the result is attached.

Make sure Jenkins reports against the pull request head SHA
A status or Check can be successfully published and still appear to be missing if it is attached to the wrong commit. GitHub evaluates required status checks on the pull request head, not necessarily the temporary merge commit created for testing.
GitHub Branch Source jobs
The Jenkins GitHub Checks plugin documentation says GitHub Branch Source reports against the pull request head SHA. Confirm the job is building the intended pull request and that the reported Check is associated with that head revision.

Plain GitSCM jobs
For plain GitSCM, the plugin reports against the last built revision. If the job checks out refs/pull/<id>/merge, it may publish against the temporary merge SHA instead of the pull request head. When the result must satisfy a head-based required check, configure the job to build the pull request head ref, refs/pull/<id>/head, and verify the actual SHA Jenkins built.
The Jenkins GitHub Checks documentation states: “Required status checks on a pull request only look at the PR head (refs/pull/<id>/head), not at GitHub’s temporary merge commit (refs/pull/<id>/merge).”

Give concurrent jobs distinct names
Use unique check names for jobs that report to the same SHA, especially when several pipelines or monorepo components run independently. Jenkins warns that identical check names on the same SHA can overwrite one another. The plugin does not combine them into a single catch-all required check, so configure branch protection against the checks that actually represent the required jobs.
Troubleshoot missing or pending results
- No result appears on the pull request: Compare the SHA receiving the status or Check with the pull request head SHA shown by GitHub. For a plain GitSCM job, inspect the last built revision and whether the checkout is the merge ref rather than the head ref.
- One job’s result replaces another: Give each concurrent job a distinct status context or Check name on that SHA.
- A required check remains pending: Confirm the expected name was reported and, for a Check, verify that it came from the expected GitHub App. Check that branch protection names the actual reported check.
- GitHub Actions checks are also part of the requirement: Check that the workflow is eligible to run for the relevant event and is not filtered or skipped. A skipped required Actions workflow can leave a check pending. This is an Actions workflow issue, distinct from Jenkins’ SHA selection.
- A merge queue is involved: GitHub documents the separate
merge_groupevent for GitHub Actions checks required in a merge queue. This applies to Actions workflow triggers; it does not change how the Jenkins plugin chooses a SHA.

If you also need a clean screenshot of a pull request page or build result for a report, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL by API; it does not publish Jenkins status or Checks. Its capture flow accepts cookie banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. It also offers an MCP server for AI agents, and its free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card.
cURL example, using Stripe as the target URL:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month with no card.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Jenkins report status on a pull request or a commit?
It reports to a commit SHA; GitHub reflects the result on pull requests involving that commit when the SHA is one GitHub evaluates for the pull request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a Jenkins commit status include a link to the build?
Yes. A commit status can include a target URL alongside its state, description, and context.
