To check for an iPhone carrier settings update, connect to Wi‑Fi or cellular service, then open Settings > General > About. If an update is available, follow the onscreen prompt. If your status bar says SOS, No Service, or Searching, start with Airplane Mode, then check your SIM or eSIM, software, and carrier account.
Update carrier settings on iPhone
- Connect your iPhone to Wi‑Fi or a cellular network.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- If a carrier settings update prompt appears, follow the onscreen instructions. A standard prompt takes less than a minute, and you can keep using the device. If the carrier requires an update, it may install automatically and show an OK button instead of Update. Apple explains the update process.
- On the About screen, look next to Carrier to see the installed settings version. Ask your carrier whether it is the latest version for its network.
Carrier settings are network configuration supplied by your carrier. They can support connectivity and features such as 5G or Wi‑Fi Calling. After setting up a new SIM or eSIM, the iPhone may need to download settings for the new carrier. This is separate from updating iOS and is not an app download.
Fix SOS, No Service, or Searching
These messages mean the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. Work through the checks below. Menu wording may differ by iOS version, model, and carrier.
1. Reconnect to the cellular network
- Open Control Center or Settings and turn on Airplane Mode.
- Wait at least 15 seconds, then turn Airplane Mode off.
- If service does not return, restart the iPhone.
Apple recommends these steps for SOS, No Service, and Searching alerts.

2. Check for software updates
Install any available iOS update separately from the carrier settings check. Then return to Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier update prompt.
3. Ask the carrier to check the account and network
Contact your carrier to verify that your account is active, your plan supports the service, your device is not blocked, and there is coverage where you are. Ask about local outages and whether the SIM or eSIM is correctly provisioned. If other nearby users on the same carrier also lack service, a local network issue is more likely than a problem unique to your iPhone.

4. Consider device diagnostics or service
On iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics that may help identify a device issue. If the carrier rules out account, coverage, outage, and SIM or eSIM causes, contact Apple or an authorized service provider about possible hardware problems.
Check SIM, eSIM, and Dual SIM lines
Verify the line is enabled
Open Settings > Cellular, tap the intended line, and make sure it is turned on. With Dual SIM, check that the line you expect to use is enabled. If the line is missing, ask your carrier to set up the eSIM or provide the appropriate physical SIM.

Reseat or replace a physical SIM
If you use a physical SIM, remove and reinsert it. If it is damaged or does not fit correctly, ask the carrier for a replacement. A SIM ejector tool is relevant only to accessing a physical SIM; it does not update carrier settings or fix account and coverage problems. For SIM alerts, Apple also recommends checking for an active plan and reviewing Settings > General > About > Carrier Lock. An unlocked iPhone shows No SIM restrictions. Check roaming when traveling
Outside your home carrier’s coverage, cellular data may require roaming on another carrier’s network. Open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming only if you need it and your plan permits it. Roaming can incur charges; confirm the plan and rates with your carrier first. Turn Data Roaming off when you do not want to use roaming data. The exact path can vary with Dual SIM and iOS wording. Apple’s iPhone cellular settings guide describes the roaming option.

Older iPhones and retired networks
Some older iPhone models may be affected by the retirement of 3G networks. This is not a universal issue: availability and impact depend on the device, carrier, and country. Ask your carrier whether its network changes affect your model. On supported older devices, also check that LTE is enabled as directed by the carrier.

If a message says Cellular Settings Updated, Apple says a modem configuration update happened automatically. Apple’s guidance states, “There is no action required by you.” This message is distinct from a carrier settings update prompt on the About screen; the modem update does not change your data plan or carrier settings. Use network reset only as a later step
A network settings reset is not the first fix to try. Apple says it removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, as well as cellular, VPN, and APN settings. If you consider it after checking the line, carrier account, and coverage, be prepared to reconnect to Wi‑Fi and restore any required network configuration. Review Apple’s network troubleshooting guidance before resetting.
