To update a Cypress visual snapshot baseline, first confirm that the difference is an intentional UI change, then use the image-comparison plugin or hosted service that owns your baseline to approve the new image. Cypress itself captures screenshots but does not compare images or provide one universal baseline-update command. The exact update command is therefore integration-specific.
Do not confuse a visual-regression baseline with a Cypress debugging screenshot. cy.screenshot() (and screenshots saved automatically after failed cypress run tests) records an image for inspection; a separate plugin or service compares that image with an approved baseline.
What a Cypress snapshot baseline is
A baseline is the approved reference image for a particular page or component state. A visual test captures the current state, compares it with that reference, and presents a diff for review. Updating the baseline means replacing or approving the reference only after you have established that the visual change is expected.
Cypress’s official visual-testing guidance states: “Cypress does not perform image comparison itself.” Your selected integration owns comparison, storage, review, and the update workflow. Cypress’s screenshot command can save PNG images in the screenshots folder by default; names follow the spec and test unless you supply one, and duplicate names receive a numeric suffix unless overwrite is enabled.

Step 1: Find the integration that owns the baseline
- Search the spec files for the visual command used after the page reaches its target state. Common examples include a plugin assertion or a hosted-service SDK call rather than plain
cy.screenshot(). - Check
cypress.config.jsorcypress.config.ts, support files, package scripts, and CI configuration for the plugin’s task registration and snapshot directory. - Read that integration’s current documentation for its update flag, environment variable, or review button. There is no universal Cypress flag that updates every provider.
Cypress lists self-managed integrations such as Cypress Image Diff, Cypress Image Snapshot, Cypress Visual Regression, and Visual Regression Diff, and identifies Pixeleye as a self-hostable review platform. It also lists hosted integrations including Applitools, Argos, Chromatic, Happo, LambdaTest SmartUI, Percy (BrowserStack), Sauce Labs Visual, SmartBear VisualTest, and Wopee.io. Availability and commands can change, so use the documentation for the version installed in your project.
Step 2: Reproduce and inspect the diff
- Run the narrowest spec or visual test that produces the changed snapshot.
- Open the current image, the stored baseline, and the diff image (or the provider’s review page). Determine whether the changed pixels match the intended design, content, or responsive behavior.
- Investigate unexpected regions before approving. A shifted layout, missing asset, wrong font, loading spinner, consent dialog, or changed API response is a regression, not a baseline update.
- Record the design or code change in the same pull request as the approved image whenever possible, so reviewers can see why the baseline moved.
Make the render deterministic before accepting a new image
Wait for the intended state
Assert that the relevant heading, component, or data state is visible before the visual command runs. A screenshot taken while a page is loading can capture a skeleton, partial font rendering, or an empty region.
Control clocks and changing data
Dates, countdowns, relative timestamps, and rotating content produce different pixels on different runs. Use cy.clock() for application time and fixtures with cy.intercept() for network responses that should remain stable.
Handle animation explicitly
Disable animations in the application or wait until the component reaches a settled state. Cypress’s waitForAnimations and animationDistanceThreshold options govern action commands; they do not guarantee that a screenshot avoids an unrelated animation already in progress.

Keep the rendering environment fixed
- Set an explicit viewport for every visual state.
- Use the same browser and, for local pixel comparisons, the same browser version and operating-system rendering environment.
- Load the same fonts and assets in CI and locally.
- Prefer one stable color scheme, timezone, locale, and device-pixel ratio unless those are deliberate test dimensions.
Hosted services may provide consistent rendering infrastructure, while local plugins leave that responsibility with your team.

Choose the right scope: element or full page
Snapshot shared components and important states, not every incidental page. Element-level comparisons reduce unrelated failures when only a card, menu, or dialog matters. Use a full-page image when the question is whether the complete layout, spacing, and responsive composition are correct. For third-party ads or widgets that cannot be made deterministic, mask a small, known region rather than increasing a tolerance for the entire image.
Update a local baseline
With a self-managed plugin, the normal sequence is:
- Run the test in the plugin’s normal comparison mode and save the diff artifacts.
- Review every changed region and fix the test or application if the difference is accidental.
- Run the plugin’s documented update mode (often a package-script flag or environment variable; the name varies by plugin and version).
- Verify that the expected baseline files changed, that no unrelated snapshots were rewritten, and that the test passes without update mode.
- Commit the approved images with the code change and have a reviewer inspect the image diff.
Do not infer that Cypress’s screenshot options update these files. Settings such as screenshot-on-failure, blacking out selectors, animation handling, or duplicate-name overwrite affect capture behavior only; they do not approve a visual-regression baseline.
Approve a baseline in a hosted service
Hosted integrations usually upload the captured image and compare it with a stored baseline on the provider’s infrastructure. Open the build, inspect each changed region, and use the provider’s approve or accept action only for intentional changes. Some services add pull-request review, multiple browser renderings, or viewport coverage. Confirm which browser, viewport, and branch are represented before approving: accepting one environment may not approve another.
Keep the service’s project, branch, and baseline-retention settings documented in your repository. A new branch should normally compare against the intended parent baseline rather than silently creating an unrelated reference.

Why an update can still fail
The command does nothing
You may be invoking plain cy.screenshot(), or the update flag belongs to a different plugin version. Locate the visual assertion and package script, then use that integration’s documented update mechanism.
Every pixel changes
Check viewport, browser version, device scale, fonts, timezone, locale, color scheme, and animation state. A missing web font commonly changes text width and causes a page-wide diff.
Only dynamic regions change
Freeze the clock, stub the response, wait for network completion, or mask the uncontrollable widget. Do not approve a moving clock or rotating advertisement as a new baseline.
The page is blank or partially loaded
Add a state assertion before capture, wait for the required selector, and inspect failed requests and console errors. Increasing a pixel threshold hides the symptom rather than fixing the test.
Local and CI results disagree
Compare browser and operating-system versions, installed fonts, viewport dimensions, hardware or device scale, locale, and environment variables. Either standardize the local/CI image environment or use a service designed to render consistently.

Duplicate screenshots appear
Cypress adds a numeric suffix when names collide unless overwrite is enabled. Give visual states stable, unique names and verify that your plugin is reading the intended file rather than a suffixed debugging capture.

- Identify the plugin or service that owns the baseline.
- Confirm the visual change against the intended design.
- Assert the target state and stabilize data, time, fonts, and animation.
- Fix viewport and rendering environment differences.
- Review the complete diff, not only the changed component.

Does Cypress have an –update-snapshots flag?
No universal flag exists. The image-comparison plugin or hosted service in your project defines its own update command or approval workflow.
Are Cypress failure screenshots visual-regression baselines?
No. Failure screenshots and cy.screenshot() captures help debugging; a separate integration compares and manages approved baselines.
Should I raise the pixel-difference threshold to stop failures?
Only when the documented tolerance matches a known rendering variation. First stabilize data, timing, fonts, viewport, and animations; broad thresholds can hide genuine regressions.
