For a routine PS5 update, go to Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings, then select Update System Software if an update is available. If a download fails, try it again from Downloads/Uploads before switching to Sony’s USB method. Use only Sony’s official update file, and do not turn off the console during installation.
How do I update my PS5?
The simplest method is to download the update directly on the console. Sony’s [PS5 system software support page] has the current version and feature details; these can change, so check Sony’s page rather than relying on a version number in an older article.
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If Update Available appears, select Update System Software and follow the on-screen prompts.
You can also enable automatic updates in the same settings area. Sony warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.” Sony also advises against installing immediately before or after a power outage. Use only the official update file and Sony’s documented process; unofficial files or methods can affect the console’s operation and may affect warranty or repair service.
What should I do if my PS5 update is stuck or fails?
If the update appears in the queue but has stopped or failed, retry it before changing methods.

- Press the PS button to open the control center.
- Select Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system software update and select View Error Info, then Try Again.
If the screen shows an error code, look up that exact code on Sony’s [PS5 error-code support page]. Similar-looking codes can indicate different problems, so do not assume one code’s remedy applies to another. If downloads fail repeatedly, move to Sony’s manual update directions below.
How do I update my PS5 with a USB drive?
The USB method is useful when the console’s internet download keeps failing or the console is offline. You need a PC or Mac with internet access, a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, and a controller connected to the console with a USB cable for Safe Mode navigation. Sony’s system software page says to allow approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file. A compatible USB drive is sufficient; Sony does not require a particular brand.

- On the USB drive, create a folder named PS5, then create a folder named UPDATE inside it.
- Download the official PS5 update file from Sony’s [system software page]. Save it in the PS5/UPDATE/ folder with the filename PS5UPDATE.PUP.
- Connect the USB drive to the PS5 and start the console in Safe Mode using the steps in the next section.
- In Safe Mode, select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the PS5 cannot find the update, confirm that the drive is FAT32 or exFAT, the folder path is exactly PS5/UPDATE/, and the filename is PS5UPDATE.PUP. Sony specifies uppercase letters and single-byte characters for the folder and file names. Do not use firmware from third-party download sites.
How do I start a PS5 in Safe Mode?
- Turn off the console by holding its power button for three seconds.
- After it has shut down, press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep, which Sony says sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the controller’s PS button.
Safe Mode offers startup and troubleshooting tools. Read each option’s description before selecting it: some options erase user data, and reinstalling system software is not a routine update step.

How do I fix common PS5 update error codes?
Sony’s PS5 error-code index includes CE-113338-9 (an error occurred while updating system software), WS-116522-7 (update failed), and CE-100009-0 (an issue with the update file). Search Sony’s error-code page for the complete code displayed on your console and follow that code’s specific instructions.
For WS-116522-7
Sony’s [WS-116522-7 support page] recommends restarting the PS5, using a wired internet connection where possible, configuring network settings again, or updating with a USB storage device. These steps are specific to this code; use the matching Sony guidance for other errors.

If the USB update file is not recognized
Check the drive format, folder path and filename first. If the documented manual update still fails, use Sony’s repair diagnostic and support route rather than trying unofficial files or selecting a destructive reset without understanding its effect.

Yes. Sony states that “Reinstalling the system software on your PS5 console will delete all of the data on your PS5 console.” The Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software) deletes user data and removes the system software, so treat it as a last resort, not a normal update fix. Back up data if possible before proceeding. If reinstallation fails, consult Sony’s [system software support page] and repair support.

Do not confuse that option with Restore Default Settings: Sony says this restores default settings without deleting games, apps, screenshots, video clips or saved data. Reset PS5 also deletes user data, though it is distinct from the reinstall option.
