Use Perl’s DBI interface with the DBD::mysql driver: connect to MySQL, prepare an UPDATE statement with ? placeholders, then pass the values to execute. This keeps data separate from SQL syntax and makes it easier to handle database errors safely.
Connect Perl to MySQL and update a row
DBI provides a common interface for Perl database access; a driver such as DBD::mysql performs the MySQL-specific work. As the DBI documentation puts it, “The DBI is just an interface.” Install DBI and DBD::mysql in the Perl environment that runs the script, then adapt this example to your database, table and credentials:

$dbh->disconnect;The connection options make errors raise exceptions and explicitly select autocommit behavior. This is a documented API pattern, not a guarantee that the example will run unchanged in every environment: provide the credentials and connection details for your setup. Check the rows your UPDATE can affect
Before executing an update, confirm that the WHERE condition identifies the intended records. Without a suitable predicate, MySQL can update every row in the table. DBI statement handles can report an affected-row count, but a driver may return -1 when that count is unavailable; do not treat every return value as an identical count.

Bind values instead of interpolating them into SQL
Use placeholders for data values and pass the values separately to execute. For example:

$sth->execute($price, $sku);Do not build a query by inserting untrusted values into a SQL string. Placeholders keep values separate from SQL syntax, helping prevent SQL injection; MySQL also documents prepared statements as a way to reduce repeated parsing work. Placeholders stand for values, not table names, column names or arbitrary SQL fragments. If a script must choose a table or column dynamically, map the choice to a fixed allowlist of identifiers in trusted code. Keep database credentials out of source code where practical, and grant the script’s database account only the permissions its job requires.
Choose autocommit or a transaction
With autocommit enabled, an individual update commits when it succeeds. MySQL 8.4 enables autocommit by default; outside an explicit transaction, a committed statement cannot later be undone with ROLLBACK. For one independent update, this behavior is often sufficient.

Use a transaction when several related writes must succeed or fail as a unit. DBI supports transaction handling through its connection methods and AutoCommit setting:
- Connect with
AutoCommit => 0, or begin a transaction using the DBI transaction method appropriate to your setup. - Run the related statements.
- Call
commitafter all statements succeed. - If a statement fails, call
rollbackbefore handling or rethrowing the error.
For a transaction to undo changes, the affected tables must use a transaction-safe storage engine such as InnoDB. MySQL notes that changes to nontransactional tables are not undone by rollback. Use DBI’s transaction controls rather than changing the server’s autocommit variable behind the handle; the driver documentation warns that a failed change to AutoCommit can leave transaction state unpredictable. Use an upsert only when missing rows should be inserted
A normal UPDATE changes matching existing rows; it does not create a row when no match exists. If the intended behavior is “insert this record if absent, otherwise update it,” MySQL 8.4 supports INSERT ... ON DUPLICATE KEY UPDATE. It applies when an insert conflicts with a PRIMARY KEY or UNIQUE index, so the relevant key must be defined in the schema.
For this clause, MySQL documents affected-row results of 1 for an inserted row, 2 for an updated row, and 0 when an existing row is set to its current values; a client flag can affect that behavior. Choose this form only when insert-if-missing semantics are wanted. Details are in the MySQL 8.4 INSERT documentation.

Handle errors, returned data and character encoding
RaiseError => 1 lets DBI raise exceptions for database errors. If you do not use it, check method return values and inspect errstr when an operation fails. In either approach, ensure an open transaction is rolled back when an error interrupts the work.
For non-SELECT statements, DBI’s do method can be a concise alternative when you do not need to keep a statement handle. For queries that return rows, prepare and execute the statement, then fetch results using methods such as fetchrow_hashref. A prepared statement can also be executed repeatedly with different bound values.
If the application stores four-byte UTF-8 characters, DBD::mysql provides the mysql_enable_utf8mb4 connection option. Set connection encoding options as part of connect(), and make sure the database, table and column character-set configuration supports the characters you expect. Test with the application’s real inputs. Driver options and behavior can vary by installed version; the live MetaCPAN references reported DBI 1.655 (dated 2026-09-30) and DBD::mysql 4.055, while the SQL behavior described here references MySQL 8.4. Check the versions installed in your environment.
