You can update the playlist feeding a 24/7 YouTube radio stream without stopping the live stream if the player or streaming service lets you edit its queue while it is running. Make the change in that playlist source—not in YouTube—and keep the encoder or cloud playout connection sending video and audio. The exact queue behavior depends on the tool: check whether edits affect the next item or interrupt the one currently playing.
What keeps a 24/7 YouTube stream running
YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder, which may be software or standalone hardware. As YouTube puts it, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” The playlist is handled separately by the media player, playout tool, or cloud service supplying that feed. YouTube’s setup guidance says the stream begins when the encoder starts sending and ends when it stops sending. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
That separation is the key: change the queue where it is managed, and do not stop or restart the encoder just to replace or add playlist items. YouTube does not provide a universal live-playlist editor or specify how third-party queues respond to edits.
Update the playlist without interrupting the feed
- Identify the playlist source. Determine whether the stream is being supplied by a local media player feeding an encoder, an integrated playout tool, or a cloud streaming service. YouTube requires an encoder sending the feed; it does not prescribe which player or playlist editor to use.
- Keep the existing encoder session running. Do not stop its output or restart the stream as a way to change the queue. Stopping the encoder’s content feed ends the stream under YouTube’s documented workflow.
- Open the source’s live queue or playlist editor. Make the change there. Follow that product’s current instructions; menu names and behavior differ by tool.
- Check what happens to the current item. Before relying on an edit, verify whether the tool adds the new item after the current one, changes only upcoming items, or switches playback immediately. YouTube documentation does not establish which behavior any particular player or service uses.
- Verify the live output. Check the live preview and confirm audio and video continue after the edit. Monitor stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. This is a practical check, not a guarantee of gapless transitions.
Choose where to manage the playlist
Both a local setup and a cloud playout service can supply a continuous feed. The main operational difference is where the playlist is edited and what must remain running. Queue behavior and recovery after a disconnected feed are product-specific; check the named provider’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular transition or recovery guarantee.

YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming and notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. OneStream Live also documents a 24/7 streaming workflow; its help page says 24/7 streaming requires Enterprise, a plan requirement that may change. These examples show that cloud options exist, not that YouTube endorses them or that their queue-edit behavior is interchangeable. Keep YouTube’s stream and archive limits in mind
Continuous feed versus broadcast event
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveStream resource, which carries audio-video content and streaming settings, from a liveBroadcast event. Its example keeps a 24/7 stream resource distinct while another broadcast resource is updated to live. This distinction helps explain why feed continuity and broadcast-event management are separate concerns; it does not describe how to edit a playlist. YouTube Data API: Life of a Broadcast

Automatic archives are limited to streams under 12 hours
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce one complete automatic archive; plan archive handling separately if you need a recording of the full broadcast. YouTube Help: archive live streams

For creators using YouTube’s HLS ingest protocol, YouTube requires a rolling media playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Troubleshoot a playlist change that disrupts playback
- The live stream ends: Check whether the encoder or playout service stopped sending content. Restore the feed using that tool’s documented procedure; changing the YouTube event alone does not restart a stopped encoder.
- The new item does not appear: Confirm that you edited the active playlist or queue, not a saved copy or a different scheduled playlist. Then check the product’s instructions for when edits take effect.
- The current track or video changes unexpectedly: The editor may apply changes immediately. Verify its behavior before making a live edit, and use a queueing method that preserves the current item if uninterrupted playback is important.
- Audio or video disappears after the edit: Check the source player’s playback, the encoder’s outgoing feed, and YouTube Live Control Room to locate where the signal was lost. The exact controls depend on your player and encoder.
- You need a full recording of a long broadcast: Streams over YouTube’s documented under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold need a separate archive plan; do not rely on one complete automatic archive.
