You can usually unlock a carrier-locked phone for free by requesting an unlock from the carrier that sold or locked it, once the device meets that carrier’s requirements. First make sure you mean a carrier lock: a SIM PIN or PUK lock and a forgotten screen passcode are different problems. Eligibility and wait times vary by carrier, plan, and country; the examples below are U.S. policies.
What kind of lock is stopping you?
A carrier or network lock is software that restricts a phone to a particular provider. CTIA describes unlocking as “disabling software that would prevent a consumer from attempting to activate a device designed for one carrier’s network on another carrier’s network.” It does not remove a SIM PIN or recover a screen passcode.
- Carrier lock: Contact the carrier that sold or locked the phone and request its official unlock.
- SIM PIN or PUK: Contact the carrier that issued the SIM for the correct recovery steps. A carrier unlock will not resolve a PIN/PUK prompt.
- Forgotten screen passcode: Use the phone maker’s passcode recovery or reset process; a carrier unlock does not bypass the screen lock.
For iPhone, Apple is explicit: “Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone.” In this context, “current carrier” means the carrier responsible for the lock, which may not be the provider you use now. Apple’s iPhone unlock instructions explain the process.

On iPhone
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Find Carrier Lock. If it says No SIM restrictions, the iPhone is unlocked.
On other phones
There is no single status screen that applies to every Android phone. Check the account or device-support tools for the carrier that sold the phone, or contact that carrier and ask whether the device is unlocked. T-Mobile provides an unlock-status and device-support guide; AT&T provides account and model-specific unlock instructions.

How to request a free carrier unlock
- Identify the original carrier. Check the purchase records, account history, or the phone’s carrier-specific support page. If the phone came from someone else, ask which carrier sold it or contact that carrier with the device details. Your present carrier may not be able to unlock a phone locked by another provider.
- Check that carrier’s current eligibility rules. Confirm the requirements for your specific device and whether it was on prepaid or postpaid service. Common conditions include an active-service period, paying off financing, account standing, and no lost, stolen, or fraud report.
- Submit the request through the carrier’s official account or support channel. Provide the account and device information requested, and ask for the unlock once eligible. Avoid paying an outside code seller before checking the carrier process.
- Follow the completion instructions. Some eligible phones unlock remotely; others require steps from the carrier or manufacturer. Allow the stated processing time and complete any device-specific steps.
- Test the phone with the intended carrier. Follow that provider’s activation instructions and check that the phone supports the network and services you need.
U.S. carrier examples: requirements differ by plan
These are examples from the carriers’ published U.S. policies, not universal rules. T-Mobile’s live policy was checked October 7, 2026; AT&T’s page was last updated June 29, 2026. Check the current policy before requesting an unlock because carrier terms can change.
| Policy detail | T-Mobile | AT&T |
|---|---|---|
| Postpaid timing and payment | Device must have been active on the requesting line for at least 40 days, and T-Mobile financing or lease must be paid in full. | Device must have been purchased more than 60 days earlier and paid in full. |
| Prepaid eligibility | Generally, 365 days must have passed since activation. An alternative applies to some devices activated sooner: more than $100 in refills per active line and more than 14 days since purchase. The policy also limits prepaid unlocks to two per line in 12 months. | Requires 12 months of paid service, among other conditions. |
| Account and device status | Account must be in good standing; device must not be reported lost, stolen, or blocked. A canceled account must have a zero balance. | Device must not be reported lost or stolen or involved in fraud; account must be in good standing. |

Why there is no one universal unlock deadline
CTIA’s Mobile Wireless Device Unlocking Voluntary Commitment is an industry commitment, not a single statutory timetable for every carrier. It says participating carriers will publish their policies, unlock qualifying postpaid devices after applicable contract or financing obligations are met, and unlock qualifying prepaid devices no later than one year after initial activation, subject to reasonable time, payment, or usage conditions. It also calls for eligible customers to be notified or remotely unlocked without an additional fee and for carriers to respond within two business days by unlocking, contacting the device maker, explaining ineligibility, or explaining a reasonable delay. The commitment allows a reasonable fee for requests from people who are not current or former customers, so a third-party buyer should not assume every request is guaranteed to be free. Read the CTIA commitment.
FCC documents from 2024 require careful interpretation. FCC 24-136 characterizes the CTIA code as voluntary, while noting that some providers’ commitments are tied to certifications. FCC 24-77 proposed a uniform 60-day unlocking rule; that proposal alone does not establish that a final rule now requires every provider to unlock phones after 60 days.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
What to do if the carrier denies or delays the request
- Ask which exact eligibility condition is unmet and whether the issue is service time, an unpaid balance, account standing, or a lost/stolen/blocked report.
- If the phone was bought used, determine which carrier originally sold or locked it. T-Mobile directs customers whose device was not sold or authorized by T-Mobile to the carrier or manufacturer that sold it.
- Ask whether the carrier must contact the device manufacturer or whether you need to complete a device-specific step. Keep the response and any case or request number.
- If the carrier says the phone is already unlocked, check its status on the device and test it with the intended network rather than treating an activation problem as proof of a lock.
Will an unlocked phone work with another carrier?
Not necessarily. Unlocking lets you attempt activation on another provider; it does not guarantee that the phone supports that provider’s frequency bands, network technology, or all services. CTIA cautions that “Unlocking a device will not necessarily make a device interoperable with other networks.” Check the destination carrier’s compatibility requirements for your exact model before switching.
