It is a software workaround—not an official GeForce feature, a guaranteed unlock, or a way to obtain NVIDIA vGPU support or licensing. Its documented method intercepts certain calls between NVIDIA services and the kernel; whether it works depends on the specific GPU, driver, kernel, and virtualization stack, and the available project information does not establish a current model-by-model compatibility list.
This explains how to unlock NVIDIA virtualization on GeForce GPUs with the “simple software hack” people often mean, what the method changes, and when NVIDIA’s supported vGPU route is the better choice. It does not present an unverified, one-size-fits-all installation procedure.
What the GeForce virtualization hack actually does
The vgpu_unlock project describes a workaround aimed at the capability checks performed by NVIDIA’s vGPU software. In the project’s explanation, NVIDIA’s vGPU services check a GPU’s PCI device identity to determine whether it supports vGPU. A userspace script intercepts relevant ioctl calls between those services and the kernel, then alters responses so the device appears vGPU-capable to the software.
If the vGPU stack accepts the altered responses, NVIDIA’s service can create mediated devices, which can then be assigned to virtual machines. In other words, the hack changes what the management software is told about the GPU; it does not change the card into an officially supported NVIDIA vGPU product.

Why there is no universal unlock procedure
The project’s description explains a mechanism, not a guaranteed recipe for every GeForce card. The result depends on interactions among the GPU’s PCI identity, the NVIDIA driver and vGPU software, the Linux kernel, and the virtualization platform. A change or mismatch in any part of that stack can affect whether the workaround functions.
The project information reviewed does not provide a current compatibility matrix covering GeForce models alongside driver, kernel, vGPU software, and hypervisor versions. Do not assume a specific card will work, or that a procedure reported for another setup will work on yours. In particular, NVIDIA listing a product such as the GeForce RTX 5090 on its CUDA GPU page is not evidence that it is compatible with vgpu_unlock.

Community workaround versus NVIDIA’s supported vGPU route
NVIDIA’s official vGPU software is a separate product stack. NVIDIA describes it as allowing multiple virtual machines to have simultaneous direct access to one physical GPU, subject to its documented compatibility and licensing requirements. Its support information covers eligible hardware, hypervisors, and guest operating systems; see NVIDIA’s vGPU documentation.

Which vGPU software releases are current?
As of October 4, 2026, NVIDIA’s vGPU release index lists version 20.2, released in August 2026, as the production release, with production-branch support through March 2027. It also lists version 19.6, released in August 2026, as the LTS release, supported through July 2028. These release dates and support periods describe NVIDIA’s official software; they do not establish compatibility with vgpu_unlock or any particular GeForce card.

What licensing does—and does not—mean
NVIDIA describes vWS, vPC, and vApps as licensed products, with licensing required for their full features. Its licensing reference also says that full-capability physical GPU pass-through or bare-metal use requires a vWS license; it describes reduced-capability options and says vPC is unavailable for pass-through or bare-metal deployments. Check the current details in NVIDIA’s licensing documentation.
Changing a capability check with a community script does not supply an NVIDIA license, confer supported-product status, or guarantee parity with official entitlements. Treat those as separate questions from whether a particular software stack can be made to recognize a device.

How to decide whether to try it
- For experimentation: Treat vgpu_unlock as an unsupported project method, and verify that its instructions and reports apply to your exact GPU and software stack before attempting anything. Plan for troubleshooting rather than assuming success.
- For a dependable deployment: Choose hardware and software combinations NVIDIA documents as supported, and confirm the relevant license and compatibility requirements for the hypervisor and guest operating systems.
- For a specific GeForce purchase: Do not buy based on the GPU’s presence in a CUDA or product list. The available project information does not establish that any particular recent GeForce model, including the RTX 5090, works with the workaround.
