To unlock a Samsung phone, contact the carrier that locked it, verify that the phone meets that carrier’s rules, and complete the carrier’s request or on-device unlock process. Samsung does not provide one universal carrier-unlock code or eligibility policy. After unlocking, check the exact phone model with the carrier you plan to use: an unlock removes a software restriction but does not guarantee full network compatibility.
First, identify the carrier lock and check the phone’s status
A phone’s manufacturer is not necessarily its original carrier. Find out which carrier sold or locked the device, then use that carrier’s status checker and eligibility rules. If you do not know the original carrier, the Samsung settings may offer clues, but the original provider is the one that handles the unlock.
Check a Samsung phone’s settings
Menu labels can vary by model and software version. AT&T gives different instructions for its Samsung devices depending on when the phone was released:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Released before September 1, 2025: Open Settings > About phone > Software information and inspect Service provider software version. AT&T says a value ending in ATT/ATT indicates the phone was originally from AT&T and can be submitted for unlocking. If it contains ATT but ends differently, AT&T says it was unlocked before reaching AT&T. If it contains no ATT, contact the original provider. See AT&T’s unlock instructions.
- Released after September 1, 2025: AT&T directs customers to Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network lock status.
AT&T’s general Android guidance also points to Settings > Connections > More connection settings to review network-lock status. Its carrier-network scan is only an indicator: seeing one available carrier makes a lock likely, while seeing multiple networks makes an unlock likely. Neither result proves that the phone will work fully on a particular network. Details are on AT&T’s carrier-lock status guide.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Check through T-Mobile
T-Mobile customers can sign in to their account, select the line, and choose Check device unlock status. In the T-Life or T-Mobile app, look for Device lock status. T-Mobile notes that an unlocked device may still not support every provider’s network or services. Its steps are on the T-Mobile device unlock page.
Recognize a lock message
On a locked Verizon phone, inserting a non-Verizon SIM may produce a SIM Not Supported message; Verizon notes that the wording can differ by manufacturer. A message can be a useful clue, but verify the status and requirements with the original carrier.

Check eligibility under the original carrier’s policy
Unlock rules depend on the original carrier and can differ between prepaid and postpaid service. Purchase date, unpaid device balances, account standing, and lost-or-stolen reports may also affect whether a request can proceed. The requirements below describe the policies on the linked U.S. carrier pages; they are not universal rules for every carrier, MVNO, region, or Samsung variant.

AT&T postpaid
AT&T’s wireless unlock page, last updated June 29, 2026, says a postpaid device must have been purchased more than 60 days ago, be paid in full with a zero installment balance, and not be active on another AT&T account. It must not be reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud, and the current customer’s bill must not be past due. AT&T says eligible Apple, Samsung, and Google devices unlock automatically once the requirements are met. A person without an AT&T account can still submit a request if the device qualifies. Check the current details at AT&T’s unlock page.

AT&T Prepaid
AT&T Prepaid uses a separate rule: the phone must have 12 months of paid AT&T service, must not be active on another AT&T account, and must not be reported lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. AT&T says eSIM users need to request an unlock according to device type. See AT&T’s unlock instructions.
T-Mobile
Start by checking the line’s device-unlock status in a T-Mobile account or app. T-Mobile says eligible devices that support remote unlocking are unlocked automatically within two business days. Verizon
Verizon’s policy depends on when the phone was purchased. Its current support page, accessed October 3, 2026, says:
| Verizon purchase date or situation | Unlock timing stated by Verizon |
|---|---|
| Purchased before January 27, 2026 | Locked for 60 days from purchase. |
| Purchased on or after January 27, 2026 | Locked until the full device payment or contract terms are fulfilled. |
| Full-retail purchase paid through a secure method | Unlocks automatically when paid. |
| Full-retail purchase paid with a Verizon Gift Card, paper check, bill credit, or magnetic-stripe/manual-entry card payment | Unlocks automatically 35 days after payment. |
Verizon also says a device previously reported lost or stolen will not unlock until it is cleared from that report. Its locking policy does not apply to a phone the customer brings to Verizon. Check the current terms on Verizon’s device unlock page.

Complete the carrier unlock process on a Samsung phone
Use Samsung’s Network Unlock menu when available
- Confirm with T-Mobile that the device is eligible, or wait for its stated remote unlock if the phone supports it.
- On the Samsung phone, open Settings > Connections > More Connection Settings > Network Unlock.
- Choose Permanent Unlock and wait for the process to finish.
- Restart the phone when prompted or after the unlock completes.
These are T-Mobile’s published Samsung steps. If Network Unlock is missing, the request fails, or the phone is not eligible, use the original carrier’s support process. Avoid unofficial unlock apps, codes, or services: the cited carrier guidance directs customers to its own eligibility and unlock routes.
Submit a carrier request when required
Use the original carrier’s official account, app, or unlock request process for your service type and device. For AT&T, verify whether the phone meets the postpaid or prepaid requirements and submit a request if needed; eligibility and automatic unlocking depend on the category. For Verizon, the purchase-date and payment conditions determine when its automatic unlock applies. Follow the carrier’s current instructions rather than assuming that inserting another SIM completes the unlock.
Check compatibility before switching networks
Unlocking permits the phone to attempt activation on another carrier; it does not change the phone’s radio hardware, supported frequency bands, or network configuration. T-Mobile’s Consumer Code explains that unlocking only disables software that would prevent an activation attempt, even if the other network is technologically compatible. It also cautions that a phone designed for one network may not be technologically compatible with another, and some functions may work while others do not—for example, voice without data. See T-Mobile’s Consumer Code, which reproduces CTIA Consumer Code principles; this is not a Samsung statement.
Before changing service, use the destination carrier’s bring-your-own-device checker with the exact model or IMEI. Confirm that the carrier supports the voice, data, and messaging services you need. A status reading “Unlocked” or a successful network scan does not establish those compatibility details.
Quick Recap
If the phone still will not unlock or activate
- The carrier says it is ineligible: Check whether the phone is prepaid or postpaid, its purchase date, any remaining installments or contract terms, account standing, and lost/stolen/fraud status. Ask the original carrier which specific condition is unmet.
- The unlock option is absent or fails: Confirm eligibility with the carrier and follow its support route. T-Mobile’s Samsung menu applies when the device supports that process; it is not a universal Samsung menu.
- The phone unlocks but the new SIM does not work as expected: Check the exact model and IMEI with the destination carrier, then verify voice, data, and messaging support. A carrier unlock alone does not guarantee compatibility.
- You cannot identify the original carrier: Review the Samsung software-information or network-lock settings where available, then contact the provider indicated by the device information. If those clues are inconclusive, a carrier can advise whether it can check the device.
