To remove a carrier network lock from a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, contact the carrier or retailer that originally sold it, check that the phone and account meet its current eligibility rules, and follow that provider’s instructions. The process and requirements vary by carrier, country, account type, and model; there is no single unlock code or sequence that applies to every S21 Ultra.

First, identify the kind of lock or connection problem

A carrier network lock restricts a phone to the carrier that sold or supplied it. It is different from a SIM PIN prompt, a settings or software problem, or a phone that cannot connect because it is incompatible with the new network’s frequencies. Samsung lists these as possible causes of SIM or network trouble in its network-lock guidance.

  • If the screen asks for a SIM PIN, use the PIN associated with the SIM card; that prompt alone does not establish that the phone is carrier-locked.
  • If a new carrier’s SIM is rejected with a network-lock message, ask the original provider to confirm the lock status and unlock process.
  • If the phone accepts the SIM but has no service, check activation and compatibility as well as lock status.

Find the model and check the unlock menu

Record the exact model code

On the phone, open Settings > About phone and note the model code. The S21 Ultra name alone does not identify its region or variant. You will also need to know which carrier or retailer originally supplied the device; the current SIM provider may not be the provider that can authorize its unlock.

Look for the network-unlock status

If available on your carrier’s software, check Settings > Connections > More connection settings > Network unlock. The Samsung Galaxy S21 series manual describes this menu as a place to view network-unlock status and, depending on the carrier, request a temporary or permanent unlock. Samsung notes that “Options may vary by carrier.” If the menu is missing, contact the original provider rather than assuming the device is unlocked or locked.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G, US Version, 128GB, Phantom Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra (Renewed) is a premium smartphone with a 6.8-inch AMOLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, and powerful camera system featuring a 108MP main lens and up to 100x zoom. It supports the S Pen, offers strong performance with 5G connectivity, and is ideal for users seeking flagship features at a better value.

Request the unlock from the original provider

  1. Find the original carrier or retailer from the purchase record, account, or device paperwork.
  2. Have the phone’s IMEI ready. Samsung’s unlock guidance says to provide the IMEI and follow the original provider’s instructions.
  3. Ask the provider to check eligibility for this specific device and account, including any financing, service-duration, lost/stolen, or contract conditions.
  4. Follow the provider’s stated process. Depending on the carrier and device, an unlock may happen remotely, through the phone’s network-unlock menu, or by entering a code when prompted. Do not use a code from an unrelated source or assume that every S21 Ultra needs one.

Eligibility is provider- and account-specific. The following are US policy examples checked on October 4, 2026, not universal requirements; confirm the current rules directly with the original carrier.

US carrier policy example Relevant requirements and process
T-Mobile postpaid The policy requires at least 40 days active on the requesting line. A T-Mobile-financed or leased device must be paid in full. Eligible devices that support remote unlock are automatically unlocked within two business days, according to T-Mobile’s SIM unlock policy. Its prepaid criteria are different and include a 365-day period with stated exceptions.
AT&T The support page lists, among other conditions, purchase more than 60 days ago, payment in full, no lost, stolen, or fraud report, permission from the controlling company where applicable, and completion of any contract or term agreement. Prepaid requirements are separate and include 12 months of paid service. For eligible Samsung devices released before September 1, 2025, AT&T says the status can be checked at About phone > Software information > Service provider software version. See AT&T’s unlock eligibility and instructions.
Verizon prepaid The consumer policy says prepaid devices remain locked until 365 days of paid, active service, then unlock automatically unless deemed stolen or fraudulently purchased. Business-device conditions are distinct. See Verizon’s device unlocking policy.

Test the phone with the new carrier

  1. Make sure the new carrier has activated the SIM or eSIM for the line.
  2. Insert the new physical SIM, or follow the carrier’s eSIM setup instructions. Restart the phone if the carrier or unlock instructions direct you to do so.
  3. Test a call and mobile data. If either fails, ask the new carrier to check line activation and the exact model’s compatibility before concluding that the unlock did not work.

A replacement SIM can help test service after an unlock, but inserting one does not remove the original carrier’s network restriction.

Check model compatibility before switching networks

“Unlocked” means the carrier restriction has been removed; it does not guarantee that every carrier supports every S21 Ultra variant or its features. Match the model code from Settings > About phone against the destination carrier’s compatibility information, including supported frequencies and features such as VoLTE, 5G, and Wi-Fi calling.

For reference, Samsung’s US business support page identifies SM-G988U1 as an unlocked Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G model and lists its connectivity specifications, including LTE bands. That specification does not certify support for every carrier, location, or network feature; confirm compatibility with the carrier you plan to use.

If the unlock or service test fails

  • The provider says the phone is not eligible: Ask which specific requirement is unmet and whether the account holder, financing company, or retailer must resolve it. Policy terms differ by account type and carrier.
  • The phone still requests an unlock code: Confirm with the original provider that the unlock was authorized and ask for its exact instructions. Do not guess codes.
  • The SIM is accepted but there is no calling or data: Check that the line and SIM are activated, then verify the model’s band and feature compatibility with the destination carrier.
  • You cannot identify the original provider: Use purchase records or account history to determine who supplied the phone; Samsung directs owners to that provider for the applicable unlock process.
