To unlock a phone, contact the carrier that locked or sold it, meet that carrier’s device-specific eligibility rules, and submit its official request—or wait for automatic unlocking if the carrier provides it. Then check that the phone supports the new carrier’s network and services. An unlock removes a carrier restriction; it does not make incompatible hardware compatible.

Before you start: identify who locked the phone

The carrier that sold or locked the device determines its unlock process, even if you now use a different SIM provider. Find the phone’s exact model and check its status with the original carrier. T-Mobile specifically directs people with devices it did not sell or authorize to contact the original carrier or manufacturer.

Carrier policies change, and eligibility can depend on whether the phone is postpaid or prepaid, its payment status, account standing, and how long it has had active service. The policies below are for AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon in the United States; they do not establish rules for every MVNO or other provider. Check the linked policy before requesting an unlock.

How to unlock an AT&T phone

Use AT&T’s official unlock support page to review eligibility and submit a request. The page, last updated June 29, 2026, lists these requirements and qualifications:

How to unlock a Verizon phone

Verizon’s device unlocking policy, updated February 18, 2026, distinguishes between postpaid and prepaid phones purchased directly from Verizon.

Postpaid devices

A device unlocks automatically when bought at full retail price or after its financing is paid in full. A secure payment is required for immediate unlocking after payoff; paying with a Verizon gift card results in a 35-day delay. A lost or stolen report can block unlocking until the issue is cleared.

iSYFIX SIM Card Tray Eject Pin Removal Tool, 10 Pack
  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs

Prepaid devices

A Verizon prepaid phone generally requires 365 days of paid, active service. The policy also addresses devices deemed stolen or fraudulently purchased. Business-device and deployed-military provisions differ, so consult the applicable subsection and agreement rather than assuming the standard consumer rules apply.

How to check whether a phone is unlocked

Start with the original carrier’s device or account status tool; the carrier can confirm whether its restriction has been removed. For an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for Carrier Lock. AT&T identifies “No SIM restrictions” as the unlocked status. Menu labels and status checks can vary on other phones, so use the manufacturer’s instructions or ask the carrier if the status is unclear.

A status reading of unlocked does not guarantee the phone will work fully on another network. Verify compatibility with the destination carrier before moving service.

Check compatibility before switching carriers

Use the destination carrier’s device-compatibility checker with the phone’s exact model number. Confirm that the model supports the required network technology and the voice, data, and messaging features you need. A phone can be unlocked but lack the bands or features needed for reliable or complete service on a particular carrier.

If the phone is branded by an MVNO, check that company’s unlock policy or ask the original seller. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon policies should not be assumed to cover every MVNO.

Unlocking checklist

  1. Identify the original seller or carrier. Do not assume the provider whose SIM is currently in the phone sold it.
  2. Find the exact phone model and unlock status. Check the original carrier’s device or account tool.
  3. Meet the applicable eligibility conditions. These may include payoff, contract terms, account standing, paid active service, or a waiting period.
  4. Use the official process. Submit the carrier’s request or follow its automatic-unlock instructions. Avoid services that promise to bypass carrier eligibility without substantiated support.
  5. Check the destination network separately. Verify model compatibility and the services you need before porting or activating a line.

Why carriers unlock phones

Unlocking lets consumers use an eligible handset with another provider without replacing the device. In a 2024 Federal Register notice, the FCC said that “mobile device unlocking facilitates consumer choice among mobile broadband providers by freeing consumers from having to replace their handset to use another network, thereby reducing switching costs.” The statement appears in the FCC notice.
