For a reachable hair clog, try a flexible drain hair-removal tool first: insert it as its instructions allow, then withdraw the caught debris carefully. Use a chemical drain cleaner only if its label names your fixture, and follow that product’s directions exactly. Never mix cleaners or plunge while chemical product may remain in the drain.
Before you start: identify the drain and the clog
Check whether the problem is in a bathroom sink, shower, or another fixture, and whether water is standing in the basin or tub. Drain openings and stopper designs vary, so a tool that fits one drain may not fit another. Do not force a tool into an opening or remove a stopper using generic instructions if you are unsure how it is secured.
If hair is visible or seems reachable, manual retrieval is a reasonable first option. If the clog is not reachable, remains after careful attempts, or you are uncertain about the drain setup, contact a plumber.

A flexible, barbed drain hair-removal tool can catch and loosen hair that is within reach. For example, Drano describes a 23-inch flexible tool for bathroom sink and shower drains; that does not establish that it will fit every drain opening or work for every clog. Check the tool’s dimensions and instructions against your fixture before using it.

- Check the opening. Make sure the tool can pass through the drain without force. Do not push it past a stopper or obstruction that it cannot safely clear.
- Insert and retrieve according to the tool instructions. Work gently; avoid forcing or twisting in a way the tool’s instructions do not allow.
- Withdraw debris carefully. Keep your hands and face clear of the tool and any splashes, and dispose of the hair and debris in the trash rather than washing it back down the drain.
- Check drainage. If water still does not drain, stop rather than repeatedly forcing the tool farther into the pipe.
Using a chemical drain cleaner: follow that product’s label
Chemical drain cleaners are optional, not a universal fix. Some non-enzymatic products contain corrosive acids or alkalis, including sulfuric or hydrochloric acid and sodium or potassium hydroxide. Poison Control warns that mishandling can cause serious injury; wear the protective gear specified by the product and pour carefully, close to the drain, to reduce splashing.
Confirm that the cleaner is labeled for your specific fixture and drain type. Directions differ by product. For example, Drano Bathroom Gel is labeled for bathroom sink, shower, and bathtub drains. Its directions say to slowly pour in the whole bottle, wait 15 minutes—or 30 minutes for a tough clog—and flush with hot, not boiling, water. These timings and steps apply to that product, not all drain cleaners.

Drano says not to plunge during or after using its gel because product may remain in a drain that is still clogged. It also warns not to mix the gel with other cleaners or chemicals because hazardous fumes or a violent reaction may result. Follow the exact label for whichever product you use, and do not add another cleaner if the first one has not worked.

What to avoid—and what to do after exposure
- Do not mix drain cleaners or add other chemicals. Dangerous fumes or reactions can result.
- Do not plunge while chemical cleaner may remain in the drain. It can splash onto skin or into eyes.
- Do not rely on baking soda and vinegar for a tough hair clog. Poison Control explains that gas generally escapes because drains are not airtight, and the combination is unlikely to melt away a tough clog.
- For an exposure, get poison-control guidance. In the United States, use webPOISONCONTROL or call 1-800-222-1222. Follow the product label and Poison Control’s directions rather than improvising treatment.
Poison Control notes that swallowing drain cleaner can cause severe chemical burns and damage to the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. Treat suspected ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation as an exposure requiring prompt guidance.

If the clog persists or the home uses a septic system
If careful manual removal does not clear the drain, or the blockage appears beyond reach, stop and seek plumbing help. The sources cited here do not establish universal stopper-removal or trap-disassembly steps, and drain designs differ.
For a home with a septic system, the EPA’s SepticSmart guidance says that what goes down sink and shower pipes reaches the system, and advises keeping hair and harmful chemicals out because they can clog or damage it. A hair-catching drain cover is one possible prevention measure, but check that it fits your drain and does not interfere with its operation.
