To type ñ or Ñ, use the shortcut for your keyboard layout or app: on a Mac with the ABC layout, press Option+N, then N or Shift+N; on a Chromebook with English (US) with International selected, press AltGr+N. In Word or Outlook, use Ctrl+Shift+~, then N. The Windows numeric-keypad code Alt+0241 produces lowercase ñ in supported contexts, but is not guaranteed in every app.
Which character do you need?
The lowercase letter is ñ; its uppercase form is Ñ. You do not need a dedicated Spanish keyboard: the available method depends on your operating system, selected input layout, or application.
Type ñ or Ñ on a Mac
With the ABC keyboard layout active, press Option+N, release the keys, then type N for ñ. For uppercase Ñ, press Shift+N as the final keystroke. Option+N enters the tilde as a dead key; the next letter completes the character. Apple also notes that ABC Extended supports typing for Latin-script languages. Type ñ on a Chromebook
- Select the English (US) with International keyboard layout.
- Press AltGr+N. Google identifies AltGr as the right Alt key.
The shortcut depends on that layout being selected; behavior can differ with other keyboard layouts. Google also documents an accents menu and modifier-key entry, with instructions depending on the chosen layout and available accents. See Google’s Chromebook keyboard and special-character guide.

Type Ñ or ñ in Word and Outlook
Microsoft documents these methods for Word and Outlook specifically:
- Tilde shortcut: Press Ctrl+Shift+~, then type N for Ñ. The shortcut chart groups Ñ with other tilde-marked letters.
- Unicode entry for lowercase ñ: Type 00F1, then press Alt+X. Word or Outlook converts the hexadecimal code into ñ.

Use the Windows Alt code for ñ
A special-character reference from Antelope Valley College lists Alt+0241 for lowercase ñ. To try it, turn on Num Lock, hold Alt, enter 0241 using the numeric keypad, then release Alt. This is a context-sensitive, legacy-style method: the reference specifies a numeric keypad, and the code is not guaranteed to work in every application. It may also be impractical on a compact laptop without a numeric keypad. The cited reference does not establish an uppercase code or a separate zero-less code. If you type accented characters frequently, a Spanish keyboard layout can be more convenient, but software input methods work without buying a special keyboard. Layouts and shortcuts can vary by operating-system version, active input source, physical keyboard, and application.
